The national sports complex in Blanchardstown, near Dublin, is the site of the national cricket stadium that the Irish government has announced plans to build. Ireland, England, and Scotland will co-host the T20 World Cup in 2030, and the stadium will be used to stage matches during that tournament.

In the government’s statement, it is stated that the facility’s first phase of development will be completed by 2028. This stage will include building the main stadium, which can accommodate 4,000 people in seats.

To further aid in the growth of cricket in Ireland, the complex will include practice arenas and a specialized performance center.

“It is really pleasing to see how the sport has grown, at all levels, in Ireland over recent years,” Catherine Martin, minister for sport said. “A National Stadium and high performance centre will provide Cricket Ireland with the facilities required to further grow participation numbers.”

Cricket Ireland’s CEO, Warren Deutrom, said that the significance of the latest news is comparable to that of Ireland’s 2017 full membership status in the International Cricket Council (ICC).

“It is a huge tribute to everybody involved at all levels in Irish cricket who have got us to the stage whereby the government genuinely regards us as a sport of national significance worthy of major investment,” he said.

Virat Kohli has achieved another landmark in the second T20 International match between India  and Ireland at the Village, Malahide. Kohli who was out for a duck in the first match opened the batting with KL Rahul in this one. He surpassed the tally of Shoaib Malik‘s 1,989 T20I runs and is 9 runs short of completing 2,000 T20I runs. At this point Kohli is behind only Martin Guptill (2,271) and Brendon McCullum (2,140) in the list of most T20I run-scorers. Kohli reached this landmark in his 59th T20I. Trying to pull Peter Chase top-edged the ball hitting it towards deep square leg. George Dockrell took a well judged catch in the deep.

Kohli is currently ranked eighth in the ICC T20I batting ranking with 670 points. The other Indian players approaching the 2,000-run landmark are Rohit Sharma (1,949), Suresh Raina (1,509) and MS Dhoni (1,455). After  Ireland’s tour India will head to England for a long tour.

Cricket Ireland are to look into the possibility of building a new national stadium in Dublin after ruling out redeveloping the ground in nearby Malahide. Ireland joined cricket’s elite nations after being granted Test status by the ICC last year and their first match in the five-day format will take place against Pakistan at Malahide from May 11-15. But with their senior men’s team now facing an expanded international programme, there are concerns over how difficult it might be to redevelop Malahide, which is situated in the heritage area of Malahide Castle Demesne and near residential housing, were it felt necessary to expand what is effectively Ireland’s headquarters ground.

Clontarf in Dublin, as well as Stormont in Belfast and Bready in County Tyrone have previously staged international matches but the long-term option officials are exploring would involve the creation of a purpose-built cricket stadium at the Sport Ireland National Sports Campus in west Dublin.”Cricket in Ireland is entering an exciting new phase, as we begin to understand more and more the implications and obligations of becoming an ICC full member,” said Cricket Ireland chief executive Warren Deutrom in a statement issued Wednesday.

“We anticipate that the new Future Tours Programme (FTP) will be finalised by the ICC in April this year. It is likely to involve the senior men alone playing about 60 home matches over the next five seasons. What has become abundantly clear to the board is that this dramatic increase in our home schedule means that we will need to share the load beyond our four existing international-standard grounds around Ireland.”

Deutrom added: “It has been no secret that our initial thinking was based around a redevelopment and expansion of Malahide Cricket Club. When we selected Malahide as the location for our main stadium in Dublin a decade ago, Irish cricket was in a very different position with a much smaller fixture list. By achieving Test status and joining the FTP, we’ve had to ask ourselves the tough question of whether that decision is still fit-for-purpose. It was a decision the board did not take lightly. Regardless of any future decision we are keen for Malahide to remain in use as an international ground for many years to come.”

Meanwhile, Cricket Ireland announced a home limited-overs series with Afghanistan, who were also granted Test status last year, in August. Three T20Is at Bready will be followed by a trio of ODIs at Stormont.

Dublin: Sept 27, 2011

Robin Waters, the former Oxford University player, in whose car Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi met with an accident, revealed that the Tiger never complained about the tragedy, but accepted took it bravely.

Recalling the accident, Waters said, “When I was driving the car, some bigger car tried to cut the corner and hit on our car. It was no fault of mine. The driver of the other car was responsible for the accident. Pataudi was bleeding and for a while was made to rest at Queen Victoria Statue nearby. I remember the words “Empress of India” were written on the Statue.

“I think Pataudi was a King of India. He took the tragedy bravely.”

“Pataudi returned to India after the accident and I returned to Ireland. There was no communication between us. But, yes, once he came with the Indian team to Ireland and knowing I live here in Dublin, invited me to a team dinner. We chatted for long. Pataudi never complained about the incident. He also said to forget about the accident as it had just happened and it was in his destiny to lose the eye.”

“Pataudi was a great humble man. He became a stronger captain after the accident,” Waters concluded.
