Smriti Mandhana, the vice captain of India, moved up one spot to third in the most recent ICC ODI women’s rankings, which were made public on Tuesday.

In the 50-over format, Mandhana is the highest-ranked Indian hitter with 738 rating points, while captain Harmanpreet Kaur is still rated ninth.

Though fellow countrymen Nilakshika de Silva (up three spots to 32nd), Harshitha Samarawickrama (up eight places to 44th), and Kavisha Dilhari (up four places to 50th) advanced in the ODI batting rankings, star batsman Chamari Athapaththu of Sri Lanka has fallen behind Mandhana to fourth position.

Despite Gaby Lewis, the Ireland opener, and Samarawickrama of Sri Lanka securing career-high rankings, Mandhana managed to maintain her fourth place in the T20 rankings.

In the second Twenty20 international between Sri Lanka and Ireland, Samarawickrama scored 65 runs off 44 balls, which helped her climb three spots to the 13th rank. Meanwhile, Lewis’s match-winning 119 runs off 75 balls propelled her up four spots to a career-best 21st position, which she had previously reached in July 2022.

Babar still continues to secure his spot in the top of the latest ODI rankings.

Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali expressed how he is unsatisfied with the latest ICC ODI rankings, particularly rising question for the top ranking of Babar Azam even taking in consideration the absence of Babar from ODI cricket since November 2023.

Basit said that by keeping Babar at the top spot, the ICC might be knowingly preventing Babar from performing. He further raised some concern covering the overall logic of their ranking system, pointing out the absence of prominent batters like Travis Head (AUS) and Rachin Ravindra (NZ) from the top positions.

“When I saw the ICC ranking (ODI batters), Babar Azam was at the top, number two was Rohit Sharma, number three was Shubman Gill, and then there was Virat Kohli at number four. I did not find it necessary to read the remaining names because I couldn’t see Travis Head and Rachin Ravindra. I think the ICC wants that Babar doesn’t perform. He would be happy with being the number one-ranked batter in ODIs. Who gives these rankings? On what basis are Babar Azam and Shubhman Gill there,” Basit said.

“Babar’s last ODI was at the last year’s World Cup. We saw the likes of Rachin Ravindra, Quinton de Kock, Travis Head and Virat Kohli at the World Cup. They scored three-four hundreds in the tournament. For Pakistan, Mohammad Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman scored a century each. What kind of ranking do they give,” he further added.

India captain Mithali Raj has returned to the top five of the latest ICC Women’s ODI Rankings for batswomen after top-scoring for India with a 72-run knock in the series opener against England in Bristol. Mithali, who has completed 22 years in international cricket, was the biggest mover in the top-ten ICC rankings as she rose three places to fifth. The world body of cricket – International Cricket Council (ICC) updated its rankings on Tuesday.

The 38-year-old Mithali rescued her side from a precarious 27 for two but India’s total of 201 for eight was not challenging enough for England, who will be defending their World Cup title in New Zealand next year. Meanwhile, India opener Smriti Mandhana dropped two places and is lying at the ninth position.

The stylish left-hander struggled in the first ODI against England women, succumbing after scoring a 25-ball 10 at Bristol.

Mithali, who had led India to the final of the last World Cup played at Lord’s in 2017, has gained three slots to reach fifth position after the Bristol knock. The former top-ranked batter returns to the top five for the first time since October 2019.

There was not much else to write home about for the Indian side in terms of rankings, with all-rounder Pooja Vastrakar re-entering in 97th place among batters and 88th among bowlers.

Hard-hitting opener Shafali Verma, the top-ranked T20I batter, has entered the ODI rankings at 120th place after scoring a 14-ball 15 on debut.

England opener Tammy Beaumont has consolidated her top position after her player of the match effort, gaining 26 rating points to reach 791 after her unbeaten 87 while Natalie Sciver’s 74 not out sees her inch up from ninth to eight position in the latest women’s ranking update, which is carried out on Tuesdays.

In the bowlers’ list, fast bowler Anya Shrubsole has progressed three places to eighth after grabbing two wickets in the match while left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone, top-ranked in T20Is, has gained four slots to reach 10th position with a haul of three for 40 that included the scalps of Mithali and Harmanpreet Kaur.

Kate Cross has moved up three places to 25th.

New Zealand has replaced reigning World Champions England as the number one ranked side in the ODI rankings but England has consolidated its position at the top of the T20I table after the annual update carried out on Monday.

These updates eliminate results from 2017-18 and half the weighting of matches played in 2019-20 which includes the 2019 World Cup. New Zealand, who defeated Bangladesh 3-0 in their only ODI series during the past year, have advanced two slots in the ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings after gaining three rating points to reach an aggregate of 121. Australia is second with 118 points while India and England are both on 115, the former ahead on decimal points.

England’s slip down to the fourth position comes in the second annual update since they won the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup at Lord’s in the summer of 2019. In the past 12 months, they have suffered 2-1 series losses to Australia and India, as well as an ODI loss to Ireland.

The latest update, which rates all matches played since May 2020 at 100 per cent and those of the previous two years at 50 per cent, sees Australia move up two places from fourth to second and India drop one place to third. The West Indies have overtaken Sri Lanka to the ninth position.

The Netherlands have been allowed to retain their ranking despite only having played four ODIs during the new rating period, since their scheduled fixtures were postponed as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

England remains the top-ranked side in the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings, extending their lead over India to five points. During this period, they drew a three-match series against Pakistan 1-1, defeated Australia 2-1 and South Africa 3-0 before losing an away series to India by a 3-2 margin.

New Zealand has also gained in the annual T20I update, moving up from fifth to third after series wins over the West Indies, Pakistan, Australia and Bangladesh. Australia has moved the other way, down from third to fifth.

Despite the pandemic, 80 countries have played the requisite six T20Is over the past three years to remain in the rankings. Five countries have lost their ranking after the update — Gambia, Ghana, Hungary, Sierra Leone and Sweden. The annual update to the Test rankings will be carried out following the conclusion of the ongoing Pakistan versus Zimbabwe series.

Players from other teams also made movements. New Zealand leg-spinner Ish Sodhi and fast bowler Lachlan Ferguson have moved up after creditable performances during a 3-0 sweep over Sri Lanka in a home series that ended on Tuesday.

Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah continued to rule their respective departments as per the latest ODI rankings released on Monday. With 884 points, Kohli, the Indian captain, despite being rested from the Asia Cup, remained the leading batsman, while Bumrah led the bowling chart with 797 points.

Leading India to their seventh Asia Cup title in the absence of Kohli in which he scored 317 runs at an average of 105.66, Rohit Sharma hung on to the second spot with 884 points, while his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan was placed fifth, tallying 802 points. Among the bowler, Kuldeep Yadav was third in the list with 700 points. Behind him is Yuzvendra Chahal at the 11th position.

India, with 702 points, are No. 2 team in ODIs, behind England. However, with both sides lined up for an engrossing series against Sri Lanka and West Indies respectively, the places can interchange. If both England and India are able to pull off wins, then England will hang on to the No. 1 ranking, but if somehow England don’t beat Sri Lanka in the five-match series, India will topple them at the top.

Following the conclusion of the three-match ODI series between South Africa and Zimbabwe, fast bowler Kagiso Rabada and legspinner Imran Tahir saw advancements in their ranking. Tahir, for picking up 10 wickets, including figures of 6/24 and a hat-trick in the second ODI, jumped three places to be placed seventh on the standings. Rabada, 23, the leading bowler in Tests also shot up three places and is now placed sixth, having picked up five wickets in two matches.

For Zimbabwe, Hamilton Masakadza (up three places to 64th) and Sean Williams (up eight places to 78th) are the main gainers among batsmen while Tendai Chetara (up six places to 45th) has progressed in the list for bowlers.

India’s Virat Kohli and Mahendra Singh Dhoni were sitting pretty in the third and fourth positions respectively on the latest ICC ODI Championship table for batsmen released Tuesday.

Kohli has 846 rating points while skipper Dhoni has 752 points to his name in the list headed by South Africa’s Hashim Amla with 871 points. Gautam Gambhir is the next best Indian, at 17th place with 666 points.

None of the Indian bowler could feature in the top 20.

The list is headed by South African Lonwabo Tsotsobe followed by Pakistan’s Saeed Ajmal and another Protea in Morne Morkel.

In the ODI Championship for team, India are at third place with 117 rating points.

Australia and South Africa are number 1 and 2 in the list.

Both Sri Lanka and Pakistan however will be aiming for improvements in their rankings when they go head to head in a five-match series which starts in Pallekele on Thursday.

Fifth-ranked Sri Lanka lead sixth-ranked Pakistan by five ratings points.

If Sri Lanka win all five matches of the series then they will move ahead of England into fourth position on 114 ratings points, irrespective of the outcome of the three-match ODI series between England and the West Indies which starts at The Rose Bowl on 16 June.

If Sri Lanka win 4-1 and England beat the West Indies 3-0, then both the sides will be on 113 ratings points but England will be ranked above Sri Lanka by a fraction of a point.

In sharp contrast, if Pakistan win the series 4-1 or better, then they will move ahead of Sri Lanka into fifth position. In case of Pakistan’s 4-1 series win, both sides will be on 108 ratings points but Pakistan will be ranked above Sri Lanka when the ratings are calculated beyond the decimal point.

Pakistan can even move to fourth if they win all five matches against Sri Lanka and the West Indies win their series against England. (PTI)
