East Delhi Riders’ batter Mayank Rawat, who hit five massive sixes against South Delhi Superstarz during the finals of Delhi Premier League 2024, expressed his desire to get picked by any franchise for the IPL 2022 trial as he smashed six sixes fir the trials.

Mayank hit fived sixes during the bowling of Ayush Badoni, during the last over of the first innings. This play also helped East Delhi win their maiden DPL title.

In a recent interview, Mayank stated how it was difficult for him to be selected by an IPL franchise even after his performance in the trials.

“I hit 6 on 6 balls in that trial. But I didn’t get picked in that trial. So it was challenging for me. It looked like I was struggling. But I didn’t give up. I tried to do my best. So that’s what I’m doing. I want to play as a team player, not as a selfish. I have always played as a team player since I was a kid. I used to play in Balwant Cricket Academy. My coach is Mr. Nagar. I have always tried to be a good team player. I have never thought of becoming selfish or making my own,” said Mayank.

“I feel like playing red ball for Delhi, playing the Ranji Trophy. I want a long career in the Ranji Trophy because I love playing red ball. T20 format is more common like IPL. I am more interested in that. But I also want to play more Red Ball Cricket,” he added.

South Delhi Superstarz opener Priyank Arya showed a impressive knock of 107 not out against Purani Dilli 6 on August 26. Arya became the first player to be the centurion of the Delhi Premier League (DPL) 2024. As Arya continues run-scoring spree in the tournament, he stated that he wanted to score the first century since Arya will be remembered forever.

“Feels really good because the first player who scores a century in a new league is remembered forever, I am thinking of making more centuries,” Arya told.

“In the beginning, it felt difficult, the more I stayed at the crease the more I could contribute to myself and the team, I was just thinking to play all 20 overs,” he added.

Arya was happy with the game he played with the bat. He hit nine fours and seven sixes in his time of 55-ball 107, and contributed in helping the South Delhi Superstarz post a massive total of 235/3.

“I was thinking I should play all 20 overs I was getting out earlier in previous matches, I wanted to carry the team with my strength,” he said.

Arya said he has been trained under the watch of Gautam Gambhir during his childhood Under-19 days along with Sanjay Bhardwaj, who calls him everyday to talk with him.

“I have had one coach since childhood, Sanjay Bhardwaj sir, he talks to me every day as to how to play my game and go about my routine,” he said.

South Delhi Superstarz’ captain Ayush Badoni gave a remarkable performance in the DPL 2024. The show of his power will be remembered for years to come. This impressive moment by Badoni came in the 8th over, where he hit four consecutive sixes off Hrithik Shokeen. This showcased his impressive batting skills and ability to dominate the bowlers.

This all began with the offbreak deliveries by Shokeen. Badoni ruthlessly replied the bowler with his aggressive shots. On the first ball, a flying delivery on the off-stump was sent over the deep mid-wicket. Badoni’s intentions were clear as he went on his knee and initiated a slog sweep.

The next delivery also was tossed up on length, and hence saw a similar outcome, being sent towards the long-on region. The crowd started erupting as Badoni hit powerful strokes and effortlessly hit boundaries.

On the fifth ball, a flighted delivery on middle stump was hit by a well-timed strike over long-on straight to a six.

Finally, on the last ball, Badoni danced down the pitch and sent the ball flying over the bowler’s head for the fourth consecutive six. That over collected a remarkable 26 runs which showed Badoni’s dominative skills.

Delhi has played its role in strengthening Indian cricket for decades. From the late Bishen Singh Bedi to Virat Kohli, the Delhi & Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) has produced countless superstars who ended up being the legends of the game. Taking another step towards this direction, the national capital is set to have its own T20 competition, called the Delhi Premier League (DPL) that will see a huge pool of cricketers – both boys and girls – displaying their talents.

The Delhi Premier tournament (DPL), which will feature six men’s teams and four women’s teams, will begin play on August 17. Notable international players like Rishabh Pant and Ishant Sharma may be seen competing in Delhi’s debut T20 tournament.

Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag served as the league’s ambassador on Tuesday, when the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) also held the draft.

Purani Delhi 6 has picked up Pant and Ishant. North Delhi Strikers have selected Harshit Rana, who is now traveling with the Indian team in Sri Lanka. Nonetheless, the selection of these Indian players was contingent upon their availability. The players’ ultimate availability for the Indian team will be determined by their dedication to the team. At the event, DDCA President Rohan Jaitley stated, “Rishabh has given his consent to be placed in the draft for the time being.”

“The unveiling of the DPL Trophy and the jerseys for all franchises symbolizes the start of an exciting journey. We are proud to showcase the unique identities of each team and the spirit of competition they bring to the league. This event is a celebration of Delhi’s rich cricketing heritage and a glimpse into the bright future we envision for the sport in our region,” Jaitley said.

Additionally, Jaitley gave his word that Delhi’s long-format team would continue to be the primary emphasis of DDCA. The league has been cleared by the BCCI following extensive scrutiny, he added, and there would be zero tolerance for any fraudulent practises.

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan could give the remainder of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) a miss to play the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) that starts on May 31. Shakib was one of three Bangladesh cricketers — alongwith Liton Das and Mahmudullah — who were picked by different franchises in the replacement draft for the remainder of the PSL.

An official of the Mohammedan Sporting Club (MSC), one of the teams participating in the DPL, said that Shakib had submitted a letter to the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM) stating that the former Bangladesh captain wanted to play with them this season.

“We have submitted a letter signed by Shakib to CCDM that says he is keen to take part in the competition for us,” Tarikul Islam Tito, a top official of MSC told Cricbuzz.

“He will not play in the PSL and instead opted to be part of our team in DPL. He is a free player because he was not part of the 2019-20 DPL due to his ban and now as he is eligible to take part and we have shown our keenness to take him in our side. BCB is yet to grant him for us but we hope to get the permission soon,” he said.

Shakib was picked by the Lahore Qalandars in the PSL while Mahmudullah and Das were signed by Multan Sultans and Karachi Kings respectively. The sixth edition of the PSL was postponed 14 matches into the season after Covid-19 cases emerged within the tournament’s bio-bubble in March.

There have been numerous incidents of cricket matches being interrupted by passionate crowds in the past. Till the 1990s, the crowd would invariably ran to the field and mob the players after the conclusion of the game. However, stringent security measures by the administrators have ensured that such incidents do not occur now. But still on some occasions, the crowd getting into the act results in match getting halted or worse, being called off. ALSO READ: Shakib-Al-Hasan wishes to erase the dreadful World T20 memory against India.

On June 12, a Dhaka Premier League (DPL) match in Savar, Bangladesh got called off after a poor umpiring decision resulted in crowd furore, as reported by ESPNCricinfo. The match was being played between Abahani Limited and Prime Dolweshwar Sporting Club (PDSC) and had players like Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, Taskin Ahmed and India’s Sachin Baby participating in it. Batting first, Tamim’s Abahani managed 191 all out and it was in the 16th over of PDSC’s innings that the commotion started.

When a stumping appeal against Raqibul Hasan off left-arm spinner Saqlain Sajib’s bowling was turned down by umpire Gazi Sohel, the Abahani players protested and their fans began to boo the umpires. Baby was at the non-striker end when the incident happened. Soon, the crowd abuse got the better of the umpires Sohel and Tanvir Ahmed as they decided to leave the field after consulting with match referee Montu Dutta. ALSO READ: Never took any formal cricket training, says Sachin Baby ahead of IPL 2016 final.

After a brief halt, PDSC were asked to chase a revised target as per the Duckworth/Lewis (D/L) method, but they refused saying weather was not a factor here and the interruption was not their fault. “Why should we go by the Duckworth/Lewis method? Our club officials are not going to abide by it today. The match didn’t stop because of us. What happened was quite unfortunate,” PDSC’s coach Mizanur Rahman Babul was quoted as saying by a report in ESPNCricinfo.

When the match was stopped, PDSC were 2 for 59 after the 17th over in pursuit of 192 from 45 overs. The decision to continue with the game on the reserve day shall be taken by Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis, the BCB standing committee that runs the league. It is notable here that a lot of Indian cricketers including the likes of Yusuf Pathan, Manoj Tiwary, Rajat Bhatia and most recently Dinesh Karthik have signed up for the 50-over DPL this season following the relaxation of the BCCI rule which stopped players from participating in overseas List-A tournaments.

Left-handed opening batsman Tamim Iqbal has knocked past 6,000 List A runs in the Dhaka Premier League. The Abahani skipper reached the landmark on his way to 55 against Gazi Group Cricketers at BKSP-3 on Tuesday, reports bdnews24.com. Asked to bat first, Tamim opened the innings 38 runs shy of the milestone. He hit Saeed Anwar Junior for back-to-back boundaries in the 18th over to become the first Bangladeshi to sign into the 6,000-run club – in 187 List A innings that included eight centuries and 41 fifties. Tamim has 4,713 runs in One-Days; 4,899 in the national team List As including warm-ups. ALSO READ: Tamim Iqbal looking to learn art of captaincy from Mashrafe Mortaza

The 27-year-old has notched 326 runs in eight matches in the league this year. His national teammate Mushfiqur Rahim, the captain of Mohammedan Sporting Club, also had the opportunity to reach the milestone on Tuesday. But the Test skipper, who needed 97 runs to join Tamim, got out for a duck against Prime Bank in Mirpur.

Ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has 5,276 runs in List A cricket.

Meanwhile, Tamim had said before the beginning of the competition that wanted to learn the art of captaincy from Mashrafe Mortaza. “Actually I’m not yet used to the leadership role. I still have a lot to learn. I haven’t done much captaincy, just some in recent tournaments”, he said.

“I think it is similar to batting, the more I will lead, the better I will get. But it would be best if I could learn from [Mashrafe]. When I play for the national team, I act as a very good supporting hand with lots of ideas. But donning the leadership role is a completely different thing. I will try to learn from him in tomorrow’s match”, Tamim said before the first match of the Dhaka Premier League.
