The post ‘Rohit and Gambhir are not on the same page’: Ex-Pakistan star makes MASSIVE claim appeared first on Cricket Country.

Team India’s disappointing performance in the ongoing Brisbane Test sparked speculation from former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali of a divide in the Indian dressing room. According to the ex-Pakistan star, skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir ‘not being on the same page’.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Basit speculated that the Indian captain and head coach have not been on the same page since Gambhir took over the reins from Rahul Dravid in July earlier this year.

“Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir are not on the same page, be it the one-day tournament in Sri Lanka; Bangladesh, which was a weak series; or the New Zealand series after that,” Basit said.

“In the second and third (Tests), they (Rohit and Gambhir) are not on the same page, like Rahul Dravid was. He and Rohit were not on the same page,” Basit added.

The former Pakistan cricketer explained his statement by pointing out the bowling combinations that India used during the first 3 matches of the series. According to Basit, with Australia using 3 left-handed batters, India could have opted for either Washington Sundar or Ravichandran Ashwin, who were respectively picked for the first two matches, as opposed to Ravindra Jadeja, who was given a chance in the Brisbane Test.

“I can explain it very easily. In all three Tests matches, a different spinner played. In two Test matches, they batted after winning the toss, but here they chose to bowl. There are three left-handers in the Australian batting….So why not (Washington) Sundar and why not (Ravichandran) Ashwin? Anybody who understands cricket will definitely talk about it,” Basit said.

Basit also questioned the Men in Blue’s decision to bowl first despite their attack getting mainly carried by Jasprit Bumrah.

“Was the decision to bowl first right? I think it was not. The Indian team is only dependent on Bumrah. The rest of the bowlers are not performing like they should. If I say it’s Bumrah vs Australia, that will be right. Similarly, it’s Travis Head vs India…Neither Rohit, nor (bowling coach) Morne Morkel and (chief coach) Gautam Gambhir are able to solve this problem,” Basit said.

“India don’t have a left-arm fast bowler in their squad. That’s a weak link. We have seen Mir Hamza or Shaheen Shah Afridi accounting for Head because that’s a different angle. That’s why, if you see, Bumrah bowls round the wicket to Head,” Basit added.

Joe Root completed his 36th Test century in the Test match against New Zealand in Wellington which put him on level with former India captain and head coach Rahul Dravid.

This is Root’s sixth Test ton in 2024 which makes him the batter with the most centuries in the format this year. Six is also Root’s joint-highest century aggregate for a year and for any English player as well. Root had previously scored half a dozen Test tons in 2021 as well.

Players Test centuries
Sachin Tendulkar51
Jacques Kallis45
Ricky Ponting41
Kumar Sangakkara38
Rahul Dravid36
Joe Root36

Root got to his century in the most ‘Bazball’ way possible as he did so with a reverse ramp shot that went over wicketkeeper Tom Blundell’s head and behind for a boundary.

Root lost his wicket to pacer Will O’Rourke for 106 runs as England declared after putting up a mammoth total of 427/6, setting a humongous target of 583 for New Zealand.

A win in Wellington will make England the first winners of the newly introduced Crowe-Thorpe trophy with the team 1-0 ahead already, in the three-match series.

With the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar series right around the corner, anticipation is going off the charts especially due the thrilling prospect of the pink-ball Test. Ahead of the first Test, former India head coach Rahul Dravid reflected on a variety of topics including Rishabh Pant’s valiant knock of 89 runs at the Gabba back in 2021 that helped India secure a famous victory against Australia.

Dravid, who has witnessed Pant’s evolution closely, expressed immense admiration for the wicketkeeper-batter’s fearless approach during the Test match in Brisbane.

“I think Rishabh’s was an incredible performance. Watching Rishabh there and chasing to get 89 to win that Test match at the Gabba, with everything on the line and such a depleted side, to put in that kind of performance under that kind of pressure–truly sensational. What a special cricketer he’s been. He’s just taken to Test cricket like a duck to water,” Dravid told Star Sports.

“It’s just phenomenal. I mean, it’s hard to imagine that, after Dhoni left, you felt there might be some time for someone to come in and replace him. I’m not saying he’s replaced him, but certainly in Test cricket, his performances have been absolutely sensational,” Dravid added.

After a rather disappointing display with the bat in the first Test at the Optus Stadium in Perth, Pant will be looking to improve his form in the upcoming Test at the Adelaide Oval.

The post “Will start judging…”: Ex-India star gives MASSIVE verdict on Gautam Gambhir’s coaching record appeared first on Cricket Country.

]]>
Former India batter Ajay Jadeja backed head coach Gautam Gambhir and said that is ‘unfair’ to criticize him given the short time he has been in the new role. Gambhir took over the reins of the Indian team from Rahul Dravid earlier in July this year.

Gambhir’s first series as a coach came against Sri Lanka where after winning the T20I series, India slumped to defeat in the ODI series against the Lankan Lions.

The Men in Blue then went on to dismantle Bangladesh in both the Test and T20I series on home soil before getting thrashed by New Zealand in the 3-match Test series where Gambhir’s side lost all 3 Tests. The defeat saw Gambhir receive heavy criticism especially from fans.

“I think you are being unfair to him. If you will start judging people on the basis of their coaching role or whatever way it is being looked at, it is too short a time to for people to be judged,” Jadeja told PTI.

“If you are not convinced that he is good, then one performance here or there will be able to convince anyone. I don’t think it is the time to judge him, it is the time we should enjoy him,” Jadeja added.

The former Indian cricketer believes that there is no point in judging Gambhir when it has only been 6 months since he has taken up the head coach position.

“So, there are phases and it will come, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. So, I won’t go into that direction and start judging him (Gambhir) in six months,” Jadeja said.

“You knew what you were asking for and what you were getting. He is a very clear-cut person and he has made it clear throughout his life. So, what your are seeing now is what everyone expected of him to do,” Jadeja added.

India will be facing Australia in the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar series which is set to take place in Adelaide and will commence from December 6.

The former head coach of Indian men’s team, Rahul Dravid, mad a prediction that Virat Kohli might have a memorable series in Australia. Rahul stated on Star Sports that Kohli might end up breaking apart the Australians in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, since he has been batting nicely on the challenging ground.

He’s been batting really well, even in South Africa a few months ago when we were there, I thought he was batting really well on a couple of difficult wickets. It’s just nice for him to be able to get that hundred at the start of the series. I think he could have a big series,” said Dravid on Star Sports.

Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar also had discussed about the obvious change in the batting strategy chosen by Virat Kohli at the Optus stadium in Perth.

His body was completely relaxed when he came into bat in the second innings. In the first innings, he came out to bat when India had lost two early wickets, he might have been under pressure. In the second innings, I think he gave himself a little more time to play the ball and, apart from the wider stance, I think he allowed himself to play the bounce by being a little bit more upright,” Gavaskar said at the end of the match.

Kohli has had a below-par performance against New Zealand at home grounds as he scored just 93 runs in three Tests. During the first Test at Perth, Kohli adjusted his style, practised according to the conditions, and controlled the Australians right as he came on the pitch.

Once dubbed as the next Sachin Tendulkar, Prithvi Shaw’s fortunes have swung drastically to the point where the Indian batter finds himself at a point of no return. For the first time in 8 years, Shaw doesn’t have an IPL franchise to play in after he went unsold at the 2024 auction.

After getting released by the Delhi Capitals, Shaw was ignored by all the franchises at the auction on Monday, not once but twice. Despite him still being only 25-years-old, if Shaw doesn’t change his methods, then there is a huge possibility that he may never be able to make a comeback.

It isn’t like Shaw hasn’t received suggestions throughout his cricketing journey. When his first big scandal broke out, the doping scam in early 2020, Shaw was spoken to by none other than legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. His advice, kept a secret all this while, was confined to three words ‘Discipline over talent’.

After also getting recently dropped from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad due to poor fitness and disciplinary issue, Shaw looks to be heading down the path of former India cricketer Vinod Kambli.

Despite all the advice that he has received, Shaw has decided to ignore them all. In fact, a former BCCI selector has come out and revealed that Shaw has turned a blind eye to everything that was said to him for his own benefit.

“Prithvi has been in Delhi Capitals. In DC itself, he had a chance to interact with Rahul Dravid, who was also his U-19 India coach, Ricky Ponting and Sourav Ganguly. It’s an open secret in Mumbai cricket that Tendulkar has also spoken to him. Are these legends fools? Do you see any change in him? Even if there is, it is not evident,” the selector told PTI.

While batter Sanju Samson seems to have cemented his place in India’s T20I team, following a century in the first South Africa T20I which saw him become the first-ever Indian to score centuries in consecutive T20Is, there still remains to be some bitterness towards the people due to whom, he wasn’t able to get many chances to play for the Men in Blue.

In a heated video that is going viral, Sanju’s father, Samson Vishwanath, can be heard digging into the Indian team leadership and management of years past for ‘ruining’ his son’s cricket career.

In an explosive interview with Malayali news station MediaOne, Vishwanath criticized the likes of – MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid and blamed them for wasting 10 years of his son’s career.

“There are 3-4 people who wasted 10 years of my son’s vital career…captains like Dhoni ji, Virat ji, Rohit ji and coach Dravid ji,” Samson’s father said.

“These four people wasted 10 years of my son’s life but the more they hurt him, the stronger Sanju came out of the crisis,” he added.

However, Samson has drastically changed his fortunes with his recent performances in T20Is and is now in pole position to become India’s opener in the format following the retirements of Rohit and Virat following the T20 World Cup triumph earlier this year.

Samson made his T20I debut all the way back in 2015, at the age of 21, after performing brilliantly in domestic short-form cricket. However, a lack of consistency and batters such as Rohit and Kohli themselves blocking the route into the team, Samson would only be able to re-enter the fold in 2021.
