After a thorough and transparent recruitment procedure, the top players in Pakistani cricket have been named mentors on three-year contracts, the PCB announced.

Former head coach of the national team Saqlain Mushtaq was replaced by Waqar Younis, who most recently served as PCB advisor on cricket issues. Also serving as national team coaches were Misbah and Waqar.

The PCB announced that the Champions One-Day Cup, which takes place in Faisalabad from September 12–29, will be the mentors’ first job for the PCB Domestic Cricket Season 2024–25.

All of the best players are required by the PCB to participate in the 50-overs competition.

A well trusted source in the Pakistan Cricket Board told PTI that Waqar’s initial appointment was as a consultant on cricket-related affairs for a small period of three weeks.

“The board has also advertised the post of advisor on cricket affairs and now candidates who have applied would be interviewed,” the source said.

The source informed that there is no clarity whether Waqar has reapplied for the role after PCB’s advertisement. “Apparently, Waqar has not responded to the ad,” the source added.

A few other sources shared that Waqar had asked PCB Chairman to allow him a short time in the role before deciding on him for a longer run.

To tackle reverse-swing, Tendulkar made certain adjustments to his technique. He revealed how he used to practice with a tennis ball by tapping from one side to polish his skills.

“During my playing days, I used to tape the ball up from one side. In season (leather) balls, we look for the shiny and the rough side and in the tennis ball, we would apply tape on one side and I used to practice reverse swing to face it in international cricket,” Tendulkar was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

Indian Street Premier League (ISPL), a T10 cricket tournament, has brought a twist in their new season with the introduction of reverse swing through the tennis ball.

Tendulkar, who is a Core Committee Member of ISPL, feels that the introduction of reverse swing will test the batters’ techniques.

“I thought why not introduce it in this format and if this is implemented then the batter’s technique will also be tested. If we are giving some advantage to the batsmen then the bowlers also need to get in the game,” Tendulkar said.

The ISPL is India’s first-ever tennis ball T10 cricket tournament which is played inside a stadium. It’s second season is set to commence from January 26, 2025.

Before taking over the PCB, Mohsin served as the caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab from January last year to February 2024.

Moshin was initially a businessman who later on entered politics. He was one of the two nominees for the role of caretaker Chief Minister of the Punjab province. Surprisingly, Mohsin was even suggested by a fellow politician Hamza Shehbaz for this role.

“Brought back into the attack and then getting it to reverse and sneak through bat and pad (of Marco Jansen), I thought that was a very, very important wicket at that time,” Shastri recalled.

“Very few have done it (change the flow of the game). I thought Wasim (Akram) and Waqar (Younis) had it in their prime when they played white-ball cricket. Shane Warne had it where he could literally tell the ball, go there, pitch there, hit leg stump,” Shastri said.

A source who is aware of these developments has said that the former captain had joined the board in a paid position and not in an advisory position.

“Presently, he has been given the title of advisor to the chairman on cricket affairs. But, a new position similar to the one that Rob Key has in the English cricket board is being created for him and would be approved by the Board of Governors,” the source said.

The source further added that once Waqar starts on his new position, he would also be the part of the national selection committee and will be involved in issues linked to central contracts.

The source said that Waqar agreed to join as an advisor but he first wanted to get used to his new role.

He recently worked with various departments and learnt about al the cricket-related matters, be it domestic or international, strategies and preparations for the coming international games and tests etc.

A former India star has now also drawn attention for his recent comments on Babar, with a clip of his criticism for the Pakistan skipper going viral on social media platforms.

Parthiv Patel, the former India wicketkeeper, didn’t mince his words as he spoke about Babar’s leadership, labelling him “selfish” during a conversation about another Pakistan batter, Fakhar Zaman.

“Captain wanted to open, so he had to come down. If the captain is a selfish player, there’s no chance,” Parthiv said on Babar.
