Dhoni had played the entire IPL season with a heavily strapped left knee and although he looked absolutely okay while keeping, more often than not batted as late as No.8 and didn’t look swift while running between the wickets.

“Yes, it is true that Dhoni will be taking medical advice for his left knee injury and accordingly decide. If surgery is advised, it can only be ascertained after reports come out, it will be completely his call,” Viswanathan told PTI.

Is there a possibility that Dhoni will decide against playing next season and thus free up a purse of Rs 15 crore for the mini auction, the CEO replied: “Frankly, we are not even thinking on those lines as we haven’t reached that stage.

“It will be completely Dhoni’s call. But I can tell you in CSK, we haven’t entertained those thoughts,” Viswanathan said.

Asked if CSK supremo N Srinivasan addressed the players after the fifth IPL Trophy and if celebrations were in the offing.

“He is very happy but there were no celebrations. The players dispersed for their respective destinations from Ahmedabad only. Also if you have seen CSK, we are never big on celebrations,” the veteran official said.

Asked if the fifth IPL title feels the sweetest, considering the spate of injuries to its top players, Viswanathan said: “It’s all about team spirit and every player knowing his role which is very well defined in our set up.

“Even a player of Ben Stokes’ stature despite his nature was brilliant around the group and the youngsters looked upto to him. This has been possible because of our captain.” What has been CSK’s hallmark over the years which enabled them to reach final in 11 of the 14 editions that they have been a part of? “I have been associated with CSK from season 1 and we have never deviated from our process. The key has been to keep things simple and explain every player what is expected of them. In our franchise, the skipper keeps everything uncomplicated,” Viswanathan said.

Hardik Pandya’s comforting hug to Mohit seconds after Ravindra Jadeja’s final over blitz took CSK to a record-equalling fifth title not only showed the character of Titans captain, but it was also an acknowledgment of Haryana pacer’s immense contribution to their campaign this season. Mohit may not have been able to nail the last two balls of the 15th over after an exemplary first four deliveries but nothing can undermine his efforts through the season as he ended with 27 wickets in 14 games, second only to teammate and friend Mohammed Shami.

Not long after playing the 2015 World Cup semi-final for India, Mohit had gone off the radar but eight years later, the experienced campaigner has roared back into the spotlight.

One doesn’t see him playing 50-over cricket again but can he sustain his form and fitness to make the Indian team in the 2024 T20 World Cup? It is a long shot with the ICC event scheduled in the West Indies and the USA right after the IPL next year but he has undoubtedly made a strong case to be tried in the few T20s that the national team plays in a 50-over World Cup year.

One shouldn’t be surprised if Mohit partners alongside Deepak Chahar when India played the five-match T20 series in West Indies and the USA in July.

Hardik, who is also expected to captain India in the next T20 showpiece, managed to get the best out of Mohit at Titans. After a performance like that, he would be tempted to give the wily pace another go at the highest level.

Mohit had broken into the Indian team 10 years ago following his exploits under MS Dhoni at CSK but it is his stint at Titans, that he has enjoyed the most. His back-of-the-hand slower ball, cutters, and knuckleball continues to trouble the batters but his improved fitness is also allowing him to bowl yorkers at a good pace.

“Majority of my IPL and India career has been under Mahi bhai. My good results have come under him, big credit goes to him for getting the best out of me.” “But what matters more for me is how much you are enjoying the game. Mohit could not be faulted for getting those two balls wrong. In the game of thinnest margins, he had done all he could.

Jadeja provided a grandstand finish, hitting a six and a four with 10 needed off the last two balls, to power CSK to their fifth IPL title as they beat defending champions GT by five wickets (DLS Method) in a thriller at the Narendra Modi Stadium, here on Monday.

After the win, the all-rounder took to Twitter to express his joy and shared a photo with his wife Rivaba holding the trophy and Dhoni sitting next to them with a broad smile.

“We did it for ONE and ONLY “MS DHONI. mahi bhai aapke liye toh kuch bhi(anything for you Mahi Bhai)” Jadeja wrote.

In the midst of the jubilant celebrations, an emotional Dhoni was captured joyfully lifting the all-rounder in a moment of delight.

Speaking to the broadcasters after the match, Jadeja said: “I’m from Gujarat, and it’s a special feeling. This crowd has been amazing. They were waiting for the rain to stop till late at night, I’d like to say a big congratulations to the CSK fans who came to support us. Dhoni walked in to bat with 22 needed off 14 and he had the chance to pull off the perfect ending but it wasn’t to be as the CSK skipper hit the ball straight to cover for a first-ball duck. Shami then bowled a fine penultimate over to leave Mohit to defend 13 in six balls as Dube and Jadeja were not able to find boundaries.

Mohit Sharma bowled excellent yorkers and gave just three runs in the first four balls. But Jadeja had other plans and he hit a six and four in the last two balls to give CSK a thrilling five-wicket win and become a team to win the title five times.
