Months ahead of the 2025 edition of the tournament, RR skipper Sanju Samson revealed that the decision-making group saw him playing against Australia in the Chennai U-19 Test. Vaibhav had even broken the record for the fastest century by an Indian in the U19 level, where he played only 58 balls for the feat.

In a conversation with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) legend Ab d Villiers, Sanju Samson shared that RR has a history of supporting youngsters. He even gave examples of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag, and Dhruv Jurel to further solidify his statement.

“I have seen his highlights. All of the people in the Rajasthan decision-making group saw him bat at the U19 Test match vs Australia in Chennai, where he scored a hundred of 60-70 balls. The shots that he played there, it felt like, that’s something special and we felt like we have to have those kind of individuals in the side and see where they go,” Sanju Samson told AB de Villiers in an interview.

“But Rajasthan Royals have a history of doing this. They find out talents and make them champions. For example, there is a Yashasvi Jaiswal who came to RR as a youngster and now is a rockstar of the Indian team. There is Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel – they all fall under that line. I think RR loves that kind of thing – yes, we want to win the IPL, but we also want to make sure that we are giving enough champions to Indian cricket. It will be exciting to meet him,” the wicketkeeper-batter added.

Vaibhav was the part of India’s Under-19 Asia Cup 2024 team, where he scored 2 half-centuries in that tournament. He has played five first-class, one List , and one T20 match so far. He has 100 runs from 10 innings in Test cricket.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi has become the youngest Indian player to have participated in List A cricket as of now. He broke Ali Akbar’s record as he is currently 13 years and 269 days old. In the 1999-2000 season, Ali made his debut in List A cricket at the age of 14 years and 51 days.

Vaibhav is currently the youngest Indian who has represented India at the U-19 level and compete in the Ranji Trophy and List A cricket match. He has also created history as he became the youngest player to have been taken by an Indian premier League (IPL) franchise Rajasthan Royals (RR), with an amount of Rs. 1.10 crore in the 2025 IPL mega-auction.

Now after almost one and a half years Chahal opened up on being snubbed by the RCB and also reckoned that he got the Indian debut cap because of the same franchise.

“I played there for 8 years. RCB basically gave me the India cap, because they gave me chance to perform. From the very first match, Virat bhaiya showed me trust. So, it felt bad, because it almost feels family when you spend 8 years at a team. A lot of rumours came in, like I asked for huge amount of money. I clarified at the time that there wasn’t anything like that. I know what I deserve,” Chahal said.

The 32-year-old also revealed that RCB promised him that they will go all out for him.

“What I felt really bad about was there was no phone call, no communication. At least have a talk. I had played 114 matches for them. In auction, they promised me that they will go all-out for me. I said, fine. When I wasn’t picked there, I was very angry. I gave them 8 years. Chinnaswamy was my favourite ground. I didn’t talk to RCB coaches. The first match I played against them, I didn’t talk to anyone,” said the leg-spinner further.

Chahal also said that his current franchise Rajasthan Royals helped him to grow as a cricketer and reckoned that whatever happened happened on good.

“I realise the auction is a very unpredictable place. So, I made peace with the fact that whatever happens, happens for good. At RR, I started bowling at death. Often, my quota would be completed before 16 overs in RCB. So, I think I grew as a cricketer in RR as well. So, whatever happened, happened for good,” said Chahal.

“I’ve an attachment for RCB and their fans, but coming to Rajasthan Royals helped me cricket-wise.”

With most of the IPL franchises owning part or full stakes in various private T20 leagues, there is an imminent threat to the game’s current structure with fears that a lot of top international players might forego their central contracts to sign football club-like deal with a singular club (franchise) to appear in various tournaments.

According to ‘The Telegraph’, RR is trying to tie Buttler down to a longer-term deal but the offer is yet to be formally tabled and it is also not clear if the cricketer will sign the deal.

“England’s white-ball captain Jos Buttler is set to be offered a landmark four-year deal by his Indian Premier League franchise Rajasthan Royals,” the report said.

“It is understood that the offer to Buttler is yet to be formally tabled, and its unclear whether the T20 World Cup winning captain intends to accept the deal.” It is a multi-million-pound deal though the exact amount is unknown.

Buttler has proved to be a run-machine for RR, having scored five tons and 18 half-centuries in 71 matches since joining them in 2018.

Buttler also plays for Paarl Royals, which is also owned by Rajasthan Royals, in the SA20. RR also own Barbados Royals in Caribbean Premier League.

The proliferation of T20 league has impacted international cricket with franchises offering long-term contracts to top players.

In the past months, there have been talks of five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians offering a multi-year contract to England star pacer Jofra Archer, who could play just 5 games for them due to injuries since being bought for Rs 8 Crore in the 2022 auction.

If a player signs a long-term contract, then the international cricket boards, in the future, might need to seek permission from the private franchises to get their services for national duty.
