Soon after suffering a humiliating 9-wicket loss to Puducherry in their home opener for the Ranji Trophy 2024 season, Delhi removed skipper Yash Dhull. Delhi’s decision to fire their youthful captain is another example of the once-dominant domestic teams making dubious selection decisions in the recent past.

On Monday, January 8, Delhi lost an Elite Group D encounter at the Arun Jaitley Stadium to the underdog Puducherry, who crushed them by 9 wickets. In seamer-friendly conditions in the capital, Captain Dhull, who captained India in the U19 World Cup in 2022, found it difficult to get going against the Puducherry fast bowlers. He scored 2 and 23 in the first two innings as Delhi was unable to go past 150 even once during the first-class game.

Joint secretary of the Delhi District Cricket Association Rajan Manchanda stated that the state organisation decided to remove Yash Dhull from leadership in an effort to assist the young batter in getting back into form.

Himmat Singh appointed as the new captain for Delhi

“Yash is a talented player but is out of form. We wanted him to do well as a batter, that is why we have relieved him of captaincy duties. Himmat is our senior player and has done very well for us. He will captain the side,” Manchanda said, as quoted by news agency PTI.

Yash Dhull, a 21-year-old who was picked to be captain in 2022 which was considered to be a bold decision by the association, has participated in 17 first-class matches for Delhi and amassed 1185 runs at an average of 43.88. He’s reached four hundreds, including an unbeaten 200 .
But recently, Yash Dhull has been having trouble with his form. In seven matches, the Delhi player failed to score fifty runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Earlier in the season, Yash Dhull was leading Delhi in both the domestic 50-over and 20-over Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy tournaments.

Puducherry had one of their greatest victories in Ranji Trophy history on Monday, January 8, when they defeated Delhi, one of the league’s heavyweights, by nine wickets in the opening game of Elite Group D at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. On a chilly morning in the capital city, Puducherry only needed to chase 51 runs to win, and they did so in style in only 13.4 overs.

Conditions favouring quick bowling meant that Captain Yash Dhull’s troubles persisted, with the young hitter unable to lead from the front. Gaurav Yadav, a former fast bowler from Madhya Pradesh who relocated to Puducherry for the Ranji Trophy, had an innings-long performance that tormented the Delhi batters.

Delhi’s collapse was masterminded by Gaurav Yadav, who took a career-high seven wickets for only 49 runs in the opening innings. In the second innings, he took three more wickets to round off his match total of ten. Puducherry was able to solidify their lead on the second day of the match because to his mesmerising performance, which held Delhi to a meagre 148 runs. Then, as if according to a script, Puducherry’s top order held fast against Ishant Sharma and Navdeep Saini, two former international bowlers from Delhi, who were unable to make any progress against the opposition’s batting order.

Delhi’s problems were made worse by their middle-order breakdown, which appeared to be a recurrent issue. In a shocking change of events, Delhi was on the verge of a humiliating home defeat after losing seven wickets for only 54 runs in the last play session. Puducherry’s other top bowler, Abin Mathew, compounded Delhi’s suffering by taking five wickets, including the vital dismissal of Delhi skipper Yash Dhull.

Delhi hasn’t played as well in the Ranji Trophy lately as they once did. They were formerly considered one of the biggest names in Indian domestic cricket, having won seven titles.

Even though Delhi has struggled to go past the group stages in the previous two Ranji Trophy seasons, questions concerning squad selection and talent management have taken front stage.

Delhi is now all set to go to Jammu and Kashmir for their season’s second match on January 12, it won’t be any easier.

PAKISTAN Shaheens successfully managed to defend their Emerging Asia Cup title after they thrashed India by 128 runs in the final.

The Pakistan squad had as many as seven players who had played for the national team. India, on the other hand, backed a young squad, with not even one player with an international cap. After India’s defeat in the final, a section of fans slammed the Pakistan team for sending an experienced team to the event.

Pakistan A captain Mohammad Haris hit back at the critics saying that they did not ask the Indian team to send ‘Kids’ and it was a decision taken by the board. Haris added even though the seven Pakistan team members had played for the national team, the number of matches they played was significantly low, adding that Indian players, on the other hand, had more than 250 IPL matches under their belt.

“People are saying that Pakistan sent A team with many seniors. We did not ask them to send little kids to the tournament. They say that we had international experience in our team. How much international matches have we played but? Saim has played 5, I have played 6. Those guys (India players) have played 260 IPL matches,” Haris was quoted as saying by Zee News.

India’s Successful Run In Emerging Asia Cup

Even though India lost the final, the team emerged as the best team in the tournament. Team India reached the final undefeated, also beating Pakistan A in a league game. Three of the top four run-scorers of the tournament were from the Indian team. Yash Dhull scored 234 runs in the tournament while Abhishek Sharma and Sai Sudarshan followed him with 221 and 220 runs respectively.

Nishant Sandhu, Manav Suthar, and RS Hangargekar, with 11, 10, and 10 wickets respectively were the top three wicket-takers of the tournament.

PAKISTAN A thrashed India A by 128 runs in the emerging Asia Cup final to successfully defend their title. The team lost to India in the league stage but bought out their A-game when it mattered the most. A magnificent 108 by Tayyab Tahir, 65 by Sahibzada Farhan, and 59 by Saim Ayub helped Pakistan Shaheen posts a mammoth score of 352-8 in 50 overs.

India got off to a flier in their chase and raced to 64 in the 9th over before the in-form Sai Sudharsan fell for 29. Abhishek Sharma stayed afloat and kept the run rate up. Despite the wicket of Nikin Jose for 11, India were in the hunt, courtesy of Sharma (61), and Yash Dhull’s (39) partnership.

Both batters, however, fell in quick succession which triggered a collapse as India collapsed to 224 all-out. For Pakistan, Sufiyan Muqeem took three wickets while Arshad Iqbal, Mehran Mumtaz, and Mohammad Wasim Jr bagged two wickets apiece.

Post the remarkable win, the Pakistan team thanked the almighty and did a team sajdah. Watch Video.

Yash Dhull Blames Poor Shots Selection For Loss In Final

Yash Dhull praised Pakistan for their show in the final and rued poor shot selections for the batting collapse.

“They batted very well, we controlled it well in the middle, but they batted well. It was a big target but we played some poor shots. The decision was okay, but they batted well and the wicket was also fresh. We played some bad shots [at three wickets down] and went down from there. None of us have played international cricket so it was a good platform for us to play and a good environment.”

Pakistan captain Mohammad Haris was also elated after the win and credited the team for performing well under pressure.

“Firstly, I would like to congratulate all of Pakistan. This is what happens, when you score big runs in a final, the opposition comes under pressure and then if you get back-to-back wickets it gets tough for them. We had tried different combinations in the last four-five matches, tried different players, and it worked well for us.

We had shown the videos of the Indian batters to our bowlers. Sai Sudharsan and Abhishek were their main players and we thought that if we could get them out early, it would help us. I am very happy with how the boys are motivated. We have the Asia Cup also coming up and the World Cup too after that. Sri Lanka is a tough place to play spin. So it was good preparation.”

PAKISTAN A is up against India A in the final of the Emerging Asia Cup. The Men In Green find themselves in a great position as a fiery 59 by Saim Ayub and 65 by Sahibzada Farhan have put the team on course for a huge score. Pakistan are 183-3 in the 28th over at the time of writing.

The Indian bowlers have been on song in the tournament and bowled out Pakistan A for 205 in the league stage before defending 211 against Bangladesh A in the semifinal. However, the bowlers have been taken for the cleaners in the final.

India had one opportunity early in the match when RS Hangargekar dismissed Saim Ayub for 16 but the delivery turned out to be a no-ball. The openers then went on to add 121 runs for the first wicket.

The incident resembled Jasprit Bumrah’s no-ball in the ICC Champions Trophy final in 2017. Bumrah had dismissed Fakhar Zaman early in the match but the ball turned out to be a no-ball, giving Fakhar Zaman a second chance after which the southpaw tormented the Indian bowling with a blistering 114.

India have been the best team in the Emerging Asia Cup and reached the final undefeated. They escaped a defeat in the semifinal against Bangladesh A after they bowled out Bangladesh for 160 while defending 212. Bangladesh at one stage were cruising to a win at 70/0 but collapsed to get bowled out for 160, with Nishant Sindhu taking 5 wickets.

Delhi Capitals cricketer Yash Dhull said that he shares a special bond with former India captain Virat Kohli. Dhull is currently leading India A in the Emerging Asia Cup in Sri Lanka.

During an interaction on ‘Follow the Blues’ on Star Sports, Yash Dhull was asked about Kohli’s impact on his career, to which he responded:

“I have met him two or three times. Virat bhaiya looks different on TV and he is different with me. So we share a special bond. I get to learn a lot from him, like his aggression and the way his mind ticks while batting. So you get to learn a lot while interacting with him.”

Both Kohli and Dhull are India’s Under 19 World Cup winning captains, apart from that both are from Delhi.

“It is a normal match for us. It is nothing like there is pressure. We will play as a unit and not think about the result. Pressure is there but we have to find a way to handle it, it’s up to us whether we enjoy it or let the pressure get to us.”

Kohli is currently in West Indies for the 2 Test match series which will be followed by 3 ODIs. In the recently concluded 1st Test India outclassed hosts by an inning and 141 runs, where Kohli scored 76 runs.

Debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal was awarded as Man of the match as he scored 171 runs. Jaiswal faced 387 balls, which is the longest innings played in terms of balls by an Indian batter on Test debut while sharing a mammoth 229-run opening stand with captain Rohit Sharma.

Apart from Jaiswal, the experienced spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja played crucial roles in India getting off to a winning start in the 2023-25 World Test Championship cycle.

India will now play the second Test match which is scheduled to start from July 20.

New Delhi: Things are not going well for the Delhi Capitals as the team has lost all five matches they have played in IPL 2023. Adding more worries to the DC camp,  the cricket bats of skipper David Warner, Mitchell Marsh and Yash Dhull and other cricket equipment worth 16 lakhs have been stolen from the camp.

According to a report by the Indian Express, the stuff vanished while the team travelled from Bengaluru to Delhi. The players learned about this development when they received kit bags in their rooms.

“All of them were shocked when they heard that everyone had lost something or the other from their kit bags. This is the first time such an incident has happened and the matter was soon raised to the logistics department, police and later at the airport. The investigation is on,” a source in Delhi Capitals told Indian Express.

As per the report, 16 bats along with pads, shoes, thigh pads and gloves were stolen from Delhi Capitals’ players kit bags. 3 bats belong to David Warner, 2 of Mitchell Marsh, 3 of Phil Salt and 5 of Yash Dhull.

Delhi Capitals Lodge Complain About Mass Theft

The Delhi side is already in turmoil as their batting order is not flowing well. Apart from their skipper, David Warner, no player other batter has shown any good sign of form and performed till now.

Warner, Salt, and Marsh’s bats cost around a lakh rupees. The franchise has lodged an official complaint about the mass stealing and somehow managed their practice session. Apart from the complaint, Delhi Capitals management has requested their respective bat companies to send a few more bats for their next clash against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Thursday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi.

New Delhi: Being the youngest wicketkeeper during his first Test match, Parthiv Patel stepped into international tournaments at the young age of 17. The left-handed batsman recently engaged with fans in a live session that was a part of ‘CricChat Season 2’ on ShareChat Audio Chatrooms powered by Parimatch. He talked about how he started playing for India and his journey through the IPL.

Reminiscing about the day he got selected for the Test match back in August 2002, Patel shared how he did not even have the time to feel nervous since the selection happened a day before the match.

“I remember Saurav Ganguly coming up to me and saying that you will play in the Test match. I had no time to be nervous. At 17, you cannot think of being nervous since not many things go around your mind,” he said.

He further elaborated on the pre-IPL and post-IPL eras. “Nowadays, the young generation does not feel nervous about being around international cricketers compared to the pre-IPL era, where meeting such personalities filled him up with nerves,” he said.

Parthiv disclosed one of the memorable days when he got selected for the Indian squad. “My sister watched it on TV that I was selected for the team. I remember her slapping me during my sleep because I thought I was dreaming.”

During the discussion, he also recalled when the famous Australian cricketer Mathew Hayden wanted to smash his face during a match in Brisbane. Now, good friends, Parthiv said that his relationship with Hayden is different now. “It has been a wonderful experience to know someone like Mathew Hayden as a person, rather than just an opponent.”

Further discussing his glorious moments where he played against all odds, he highlighted one of the instances when during the IPL in 2015, he fractured his finger while playing.

On the advice of Sachin Tendulkar, he received an injection to numb his finger and managed to play the finals, only to win the match!

Taking a shot at predicting the winner for this season’s IPL, Parthiv said one of the new teams, Lucknow Super Giants or Gujarat Titans has excellent potential of winning. He further added that players like Mohsin Khan, Umran Malik, Yash Dhull, and Tilak Varma are great prospects to join the Indian cricket team.
