Delhi Capitals cricketer Yash Dhull said that he shares a special bond with former India captain Virat Kohli. Dhull is currently leading India A in the Emerging Asia Cup in Sri Lanka.

During an interaction on ‘Follow the Blues’ on Star Sports, Yash Dhull was asked about Kohli’s impact on his career, to which he responded:

“I have met him two or three times. Virat bhaiya looks different on TV and he is different with me. So we share a special bond. I get to learn a lot from him, like his aggression and the way his mind ticks while batting. So you get to learn a lot while interacting with him.”

Both Kohli and Dhull are India’s Under 19 World Cup winning captains, apart from that both are from Delhi.

“It is a normal match for us. It is nothing like there is pressure. We will play as a unit and not think about the result. Pressure is there but we have to find a way to handle it, it’s up to us whether we enjoy it or let the pressure get to us.”

Kohli is currently in West Indies for the 2 Test match series which will be followed by 3 ODIs. In the recently concluded 1st Test India outclassed hosts by an inning and 141 runs, where Kohli scored 76 runs.

Debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal was awarded as Man of the match as he scored 171 runs. Jaiswal faced 387 balls, which is the longest innings played in terms of balls by an Indian batter on Test debut while sharing a mammoth 229-run opening stand with captain Rohit Sharma.

Apart from Jaiswal, the experienced spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja played crucial roles in India getting off to a winning start in the 2023-25 World Test Championship cycle.

India will now play the second Test match which is scheduled to start from July 20.

For the first time in the history of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) and Adelaide Oval will host standalone regular season matches in the ninth season of the competition in what is seen as a groundbreaking step.

The ninth season of the WBBL will begin on October 19, with the opening match will be between Sydney Sixers and Melbourne Stars. Teams will play more matches in their home markets than ever before, while each side will feature at their home ground in their first nine days of the tournament. The 59-game competition ends on December 2.

“Weber WBBL|09 is building as our biggest tournament yet, from the first women’s overseas player draft to historic matches at three of Australia’s most iconic stadiums and other venues across the country that are synonymous with the WBBL.”

“The WBBL has long been the world’s leading cricket league for women and the natural progression of the League is to have the best players in the world playing in the best cricket venues in the world.”

“Clubs, players and fans will benefit from more home games in each market and each team featuring at home in the first nine days of the tournament,” said Alistair Dobson, General Manager, Big Bash Leagues, in a statement.

Over a blockbuster weekend to round out the regular season, five matches will be played across the three venues, including Adelaide Strikers hosting Perth Scorchers under lights at Adelaide Oval on November 24, the Melbourne Derby at the MCG on November 25 and Sydney Derby on November 26 at the SCG.

The WBBL will also have an inaugural draft for overseas players ahead of the upcoming season, with further details to be revealed in the immediate future. Television network Seven will broadcast 24 matches, including all three finals, with Foxtel and Kayo to show all 59 matches live.

Tickets for the matches will be available from August 24. What will also help for the upcoming WBBL season is that there are no men’s international matches scheduled in the country at the same time, with Australia participating in Men’s ODI World Cup in India from October 5-November 19.

“Players will be paid more than ever in WBBL|09 with the salary cap per team doubling and the top players set to earn over $100,000. We thank our broadcast partners for their assistance in this process and ongoing commitment to growing the women’s game.”

“It’s no coincidence the WBBL is the fourth most-watched sports league and most-watched women’s league in the country,” added Dobson.

Mumbai Indians continued their unbeaten run in the inaugural Women’s Premier League after fetching a resounding 55-run win over Gujarat Giants that helped them become the first team to reach the playoffs. Harmanpreet Kaur, who made 65 when these two sides met in the opening game, hit a brisk fifty once again before the bowlers delivered in unison to as MI picked up their fifth straight win in the competition.

MI make watchful start

Mumbai Indians didn’t make the greatest of starts as they were stunned in the very first over of the game. Hayley Matthews hit one straight to cover point to fall for a duck and they made just 11 runs in the first three overs. Nat Sciver broke the shackles with a couple of drives that went to the boundary and two more boundaries followed in the next over as the run rate finally crept above six. Mumbai Indians finished with 40 runs in the powerplay and they needed both Yastika Bhatia and Nat Sciver to get a move on. However, Gujarat kept things tight post the powerplay and if not for a six from Yastika in the 10th over, the run rate would have slipped below six once again. But just when Nat Sciver switched on the gears again with a four and a six, Gujarat struck by dismissing her for 36. To make matters worse, the other set batter Yastka got run out following a misunderstanding with Harmanpreet.

The skipper makes up

The onus was once again on Harmanpreet to do the damage at the death especially after Yasika’s run out and the skipper didn’t disappoint. After fetching successive boundaries off Ash Gardner, Harmanpreet took on Annabel Sutherland for a couple of more boundaries to race to 24 off just 15. Gujarat then pulled things back by striking regularly, led on the field by some brilliance from Harleen Deol but Harmanpreet struck a couple of sixes off Sutherland to guide her side past 150. The skipper found the boundary a couple of more times in the final over to bring up a terrific fifty before departing for 51.

How did the Giants fare in the powerplay?

Quite awful. Wickets kept tumbling as MI took control of the contest quite early into the second innings. Sophie Dunkley was trapped leg-before-wicket first ball and while Harleen Deol helped her side fight back with a few boundaries, MI struck twice in the final over of the powerplay to take charge. Matthews first got rid of Sabbhineni Meghana before trapping Sutherland lbw for a four-ball duck. 34/3 quickly became 48/4 when Issy Wong opened her column with Harleen’s wicket. Amelia Kerr then accounted for Gardner’s wicket as Gujarat found themselves reeling at 49/5 at the halfway mark.

Any signs of a fightback?

Absolutely not. Dayalan Hemalatha was the next to depart as she gifted Kerr her second wicket and Sneh Rana was trapped lbw the very next ball after fetching back-to-back boundaries off Nat Sciver. Needing 77 runs from the final five overs with just three wickets in hand meant only one thing. Sciver and Matthews then added one more to their tally in their respective final overs to finish with three-wicket hauls as Gujarat crawled to 107/9 in their quota. While the margin of defeat was definitely not as bad as it was in the opening game (143 runs), this would still sting Gujarat as they have now lost for the fourth time in five games.

Brief scores: Mumbai Indians Women162/8 in 20 overs (Harmanpreet Kaur 51, Yastika Bhatia 44; Ash Gardner 3/34) beat Gujarat Giants 107/9 in 20 overs (Harleen Deol 22; Nat Sciver 3/21, Hayley Matthews 3/23) by 55 runs

As they prepare for the first reverse fixture, Gujarat Giants need no reminders of what happened in the tournament opener against Mumbai Indians. Their campaign unraveled pretty quickly from the moment they lost the regular skipper Beth Mooney to injury in the first over of that 200-plus chase. GGT couldn’t also get one of their overseas players to make the trip. The vice-captain, now elevated to the leadership role, has been playing with a heavily strapped hand, and some of the selection/non-selection decisions have been puzzling.

As such, the Giants are placed fourth in a five-team table, having beaten only the win-less RCB so far in the first leg of WPL 2023. Barring that and the last-over thriller they lost to UP Warriorz, two comprehensive defeats have severely impacted their NRR too. Harleen Deol is the only exception in an otherwise inconsistent batting order, though D Hemalatha has been commendable in the role of a finisher/power-hitter albeit without any notable big scores. Likewise, Sophia Dunkley got a harsh deal being dropped from the XI for replacement player Laura Wolvaardt, a day after scoring the tournament’s fastest fifty (18 balls) – an error in judgment Giants accepted at the end of the game.

Giants have been guilty of leaking plenty of runs in the death overs and overall bowling also hasn’t seen a stand-out performance besides a fifer on debut from Kim Garth, who flew in as a replacement for the unavailable Deandra Dottin. Amidst these consistency concerns, GGT is faced with the uphill task of trying to end MI’s unbeaten run and revive its campaign in the process.

The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side started the fireworks 10 days ago and none of the four opponents have been able to douse the fire yet. They’ve convincingly thrashed all four opponents in the first half of the tournament – including the Meg Lanning-led Delhi Capitals – to firmly hold on to the top spot in the standings.

Purple Cap holder left-arm spinner Saika Ishaque has been leading the bowling unit, having snapped 12 of the 36 wickets MI picked up in the four games so far, while three of their top-four are in the top-10 run-getters list of the season. If at all, the only concern for MI could be that their middle-lower order batting has gone largely untested with the openers, skipper Harmanpreet and Nat Sciver-Brunt doing the bulk of work to script easy wins.

When: Tuesday, March 14 at 7:30 PM IST

Where: Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai

What to expect: The wicket did offer some turn in the second innings of the last match played at the CCI. The 200+ pitches at the start of the season are starting to wear off (only if slightly) and that will see a drop in par scores in the 170 range. The dew so far has been minimal, though.

Team News

Mumbai Indians

Pooja Vastrakar sat out MI’s last game due to an undisclosed injury. The seriousness of it is unknown, but should she have recovered, the all-rounder could walk straight back into the XI.

Probable XI: Yastika Bhatia (wk), Hayley Matthews, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Harmanpreet Kaur (c), Amelia Kerr, Dhara Gujjar/Pooja Vastrakar, Issy Wong, Amanjot Kaur, Humaira Kazi, Jintimani Kalita, Saika Ishaque

Gujarat Giants

Head coach Rachael Haynes admitted, in hindsight, that benching Dunkley just after she hit the fastest fifty of the competition was an error on their part. It’s difficult to see Wolvaardt retaining her place in the XI unless GGT decides to go a bowler short, and also unfair to see her getting dropped after a failure in just the debut game.

Probable XI: Sabbhineni Meghana, Laura Wolvaardt/Sophia Dunkley, Harleen Deol, Ashleigh Gardner, Georgia Wareham/Annabel Sutherland, Sushma Verma (wk), Dayalan Hemalatha, Sneh Rana (c), Kim Garth, Mansi Joshi, Tanuja Kanwar

What did they say?

“I’m getting a chance to open the innings so that’s better for me because, since childhood, I’ve always been an opener. So, this role suits me and I really enjoy biting at the top of the order because I can get as many balls to build my innings.” – Yastika Bhatia is enjoying her role as MI opener

New Delhi: Star Indian opener KL Rahul is going to a rough patch and struggling on the pitch, this poor form in the red-ball has raised questions about his place in the team. In fact Rahul has been dropped from the playing XI in the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and in his place Shubman Gill has been given an opportunity.

Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir opens up about Rahul’s struggle on the field. While speaking on Sports Tak, Lucknow Super Giants mentor, Gautam, expressed that getting dropped from the Indian T20I and Test sides should ‘hurt’ the prolific batter.

“These things happen to every cricketer. Name one cricketer who has scored runs with the same consistency from the start to the end. And these things are good for you. These things should hurt you. If it has hurt him then it is a great thing for us. When you see someone else play and you are running around as a 12th man with water bottles, it should hurt you,” Gautam Gambhir was quoted as saying on Sports Tak.
