Indian spinner Yuzvendra Chahal showed his magic once again by grabbing his second-consecutive 5-wicket haul in County Cricket as his side Northamptonshire resisted a Leicestershire fight-back to secure the victory by 9 wickets win in the English County Championship.

Following up on his figures of 4/82 in his first innings, Chahal did even better and claimed a 5-wicket haul in the second innings. He finished with a 9-wicket haul in the match and was crucial to his side’s victory.

Thanks to his fifer, Leicestershire were bowled out for 316 and were only able to set a target of 137, which was easily achieved by the Northants in 30.3 overs. Skipper Luke Procter (68 not out) and George Bartlett (54 not out) sealed the chase.

Leicestershire, after resuming the final day on 69/4, recovered through strong batting from Scott Currie and Tom Scriven (48), with Currie reaching a century (120) before being dismissed by Chahal for his fifth wicket.

Chahal also dismissed key players, including skipper Lewis Hill (14) with a well-pitched delivery that turned sharply, and Liam Trevaskis (2) with a catch at short leg.

Despite conceding runs during an aggressive 110-run (141 balls) partnership between Currie and Scriven, including an expensive 19-run over, Chahal’s persistence paid off as he eventually claimed Currie’s wicket to have them reeling at 303/9. Their innings lasted 3 more overs with Saif Zaib (2/61) dismissing Louis Kimber.

In the previous match, Chahal had claimed 5/45 and 4/45 in Northants’ 133-run win over Derbyshire.

In an English County Championship Division 2 encounter between Northamptonshire and Derbyshire, senior India leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal got five wickets for 45.

During the match, the Indian white-ball specialist achieved a personal record of 100 first-class wickets with his third five-wicket haul in first-class cricket.

The wiry leg-break bowler, who also claimed five wickets (5/14) against Kent in the One Day Cup last month, has found success in the English Summer thus far.

In the current game, Northants batted first and scored 219 runs in the opening half, with 90 runs coming from Saif Zib. In response, Derbyshire was bowled out for 165 in 61.3 overs by Chahal (5/45 in 16.3 overs) and Rob Keogh 3/65.

Jack Morley, Aneurin Donald, Wayne Madsen, Alex Thomson, and Zak Chappell were among Chahal’s victims.

With contributions of 4 and 2 in each of the two innings, Chahal’s colleague Prithvi Shaw had another disappointing red ball game. Shaw has also failed to score more than 50 in his last three first-class innings.

Yuzvendra Chahal, an India leg-spinner, made a spectacular start for the Northamptonshire Steelbacks on Wednesday in the One-Day Cup in Canterbury. He claimed five wickets in as many games to help his team defeat Kent Spitfires, a former County team, by nine wickets.

An hour before his debut, the 34-year-old’s signing with the Northants was revealed.

As a member of India’s winning T20 World Cup team, Chahal utterly destroyed Kent’s batting lineup, taking five wickets for fourteen in his ten overs and bowling them out for 82 in 35.1 overs.

Jaydn Denly (age 22), Ekansh Singh (10), Grant Stewart (1), Beyers Swanepoel (1), and Nathan Gilchrist (6) were among his victims.

The tourists easily achieved the target, scoring 86 for one in 14 overs.

In the last match of the tournament, the Northants won for the first time this year. They finished eighth in the nine-team Group A table, missing out on a trip to the quarterfinals after losing their previous six games.

Chahal will play in the team’s last five County Championship Division Two games in addition to his One-Day Cup encounter.

INDIA opener Prithvi Shaw opened up after scoring 153-ball 244 for Northamptonshire in England’s One-Day Cup tournament against Somerset.

The 23-year-old, who is playing in his maiden county season, smashed 28 fours and 11 sixes en route to his second List A double century.

The batter said that he is not really thinking what Indian selectors are thinking.

“Definitely experience for sure. Not really thinking what the Indian selectors may be thinking, but I just want to have a good time here, have a good time with the players over here and the support staff. Northamptonshire have given me this opportunity… they’re really looking after me. I’m really enjoying it,” Shaw was quoted as saying.

“The sun was out, it was kind of like Indian weather today so it was really looking good. You know when an inside edge doesn’t get me out, that means this day is for me. You have to be lucky sometimes, so I think this was a day for me. I didn’t look back after that,” Shaw said.

He last played for India on the tour of Sri Lanka in July 2021, and was part of the squad for the T20Is at home against New Zealand earlier this year but was left out for the ongoing series against West Indies.

The talented opener has also had to deal with off field issues recently.

In 56 List A games, Shaw has amassed 2687 runs, at an average of 51.67.

Shaw had scores of 26 and 34 in his first two outings for Northamptonshire.

“The 227 was in my head to be honest. I spoke to Whitey [Whiteman] when he was there and I told him it’s 227, my highest score. But it was a good team effort all around. I always try and win matches for the team and I’m the kind of a player who puts my team first and then myself. If scoring like this can help my team to win, then I should continue this,” he added.

Northamptonshire have re-signed New Zealand allrounder Doug Bracewell for the last three games of the County Championship season. The move was taken after talks with West Indies pacer Kemar Roach went kaput and see Bracewell returns to the side where he played a few games at Wantage Road last summer.

“I got the buzz last week from Rips and I’m really excited to come back and hopefully help the lads get promoted to the top div.” Bracewell told northantscricket.com.

“I’m familiar with the bunch of the lads that are here and I really enjoyed my time here last year even though it was only 3 or 4 games. It always helps being in a familiar team with a little taste last year, I’m ready to hit the ground running.”

Bracewell, who has played 125 first-class games, which include 27 Test matches for New Zealand, has pocketed 376 wickets.

“Initially we’d spoken with Kemar Roach to add some more variety and a bit of express pace to our attack, but once that fell down we were keen to get someone of high all-round quality,” head coach David Ripley said.

“Being able to have Doug around for those three games is something we couldn’t really resist when we got a whiff he was interested in filling that void for us.”

Captain Adam Rossington was happy to welcome Bracewell back. “I think Doug’s a great signing for us for the last 3 games and our promotion push. He brings high quality skill with both bat and ball which we’ve seen from him before in a Northants shirt,” Rossington said.

Northants are currently third in the second division. Three teams will be promoted to Division One after the ongoing season.

Experienced campaigner Michael Klinger scored his eighth T20 hundred to steer Gloucestershire to a five-run victory over Kent in the Vitality T20 Blast 2019 yesterday, also confirming a quarter-final spot for his team.

With his eighth ton, Klinger now sits just second to Chris Gayle in the list of most centuries in T20 cricket. The Australian veteran went past Aaron Finch, David Warner, Luke Wright and Brendon McCullum with his record century.

Klinger and Miles Hammond put up 70 on the board in the first eight overs of Gloucestershire’s innings. The 39-year-old brought up his century on the final delivery with a boundary, but had no idea that he had reached the three-figure mark. Klinger only got to know about it after he was applauded for his effort.

Kent, after losing both their openers in the first four overs of their chase, made a comeback with Faf du Plessis (60 off 45) and skipper Sam Billings (55 of 40) adding 122 runs for the third wicket in 11.5 overs. Ryan Higgins jeopardised the chase with the wicket of Billings and followed up with scalps of du Plessis and Alex Blake in the 19th over.

Requiring 12 runs in the final over bowled by David Payne, Kent just managed six to lose by five runs.

Brief scores: Gloucestershire 180/3 in 20 overs (Klinger 102*) beat Kent 175/8 in 20 overs (du Plessis 60, Billings 55; Higgins 3/36) by five runs.

AB de Villiers scored a half-century on his comeback. @Middlesex Facebook Page

Elsewhere in the Vitality Blast, AB de Villiers‘ 52* off 34 balls was not enough for Middlesex, as riding on half-centuries from openers James Vince and Aneurin Donald, Hampshire chased down 154 in the 19th over with eight wickets in hand.

Middlesex’s batsmen got starts but failed to convert. Paul Stirling (24 off 15), Dawid Malan (23 off 21), Mohammad Hafeez (15 off 15) and Eoin Morgan (13 off 13) could not capitalise.

De Villiers, making his comeback after a break of three weeks, propelled the score past 150 with his half-century but that wasn’t enough as Vince (66* off 55) and Donald (51 off 32) gave Hampshire a brisk start that set them up for a facile win.

Brief scores: Hampshire 155/2 in 18.3 overs (Vince 66*, Donald 51) beat Middlesex (de Villiers 52*, Crane 2/22) by eight wickets.

Half-centuries from Ravi Bopara and Ryan ten Doeschate and a four-wicket haul from James Porter saw Essex defeat Surrey by 19 runs at Kennington Oval. After opting to bat first, Essex were 69/4 after 9.2 overs before the experienced duo of Bopara and Ten Doeschate took the charge and advanced the score to 186/4 in 20 overs.

Porter removed Surrey’s strong top three – Aaron Finch, Mark Stoneman and Sam Curran – in his first two overs to dent their chase. Jordan Clark (60 off 32) stood out for his side but regular wickets meant that Surrey were never really in the hunt.

Brief scores: Essex 186/4 in 20 overs (Bopara 70*, ten Doeschate 55*) beat Surrey 167 in 19.5 overs (Clark 60, Pope 35; Porter 4/38) by 19 runs

David Willey took four wickets in Yorkshire’s win. @AFP (file photo)

David Willey skittled Northamptonshire for 107 with four wickets to lead Yorkshire to an 80-run victory. Chasing 188, Northamptonshire were  rocked early to slip to 43/5 and Tom Sole’s 41 off 35 deliveries was the only takeaway for the losing team.

Earlier, openers Tom Kohler-Cadmore (51 off 41) and Adam Lyth (50 off 28) drove Yorkshire to 88/1 in 9.3 overs. Harry Brook’s 38 off 16 balls saw them cross the 150-run mark and in the end, Yorkshire put up a a big total of 187/7 in 20 overs. Both teams are out of the quarter-finals race.

Brief scores: Yorkshire 187/7 in 20 overs (Kohler-Cadmore 51, Adam Lyth 50) beat Northamptonshire 107 in 18 overs (Sole 41*, Willey 4/18) by 80 runs
