Former Test captain of Pakistan, Azhar Ali, has came out as a contender to be appointed at a senior position in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), to look after the development program for the youth.

On Wednesday, The Board gave out the advertisement for the position of a new Director for Youth Cricket, where the deadline to apply for this position is given out at October 31. The only criteria to apply for the position is given that a player must have played 50 Tests for Pakistan.

According to a source in the board, Azhar Ali has come out to be the top contender for this post, considering that he has showed his interest to work with junior players and improve the system.

“Another former former captain, Mohammad Yousuf is also keen on working in this position and was one reason why he resigned as national selector,” the source said.

The PCB introduced this post for the appointed candidate to work with Under-13 t Under-19 levels along with the regional coaches, academics and players. The appointed candidate will also be given the task to look out for new emerging talents and grooming them with proper systems and facilities.

The source concluded by telling that another reason for the introduction of this post was to dismiss politics and frauds in age verification for the tournaments related to the age groups.

In the ongoing U-19 Test match between India and Australia, Vaibhav Suryavanshi made the fastest century in U19 for India. The young batter reached 100 runs in just 58 deliveries, then got run out at 104 runs.

This century is overall the second fastest century in the history of Test cricket till now. England’s Moeen Ali is the record holder, which was registered back in 2005 and was registered in 56 deliveries.

The century by Vaibhav after India restricted the visitors for 293 in the first innings.

Vaibhav’s father Sanjeev Suryavanshi had shared how his own passion for the sport drove his son to making rapid inroads in India’s domestic circuit.

“I was a cricket tragic myself. But in Bihar, let alone cricket, there was no scope for any sport. I moved to Mumbai at the age of 19 and did a lot of jobs, such as working as a bouncer in a nightclub in Colaba, working in a Sulabh toilet or at the port. I used to spend my off days at the Oval Maidan. There young kids playing cricket would be covered by pads and helmets. A few of them were so good that one could watch them for hours. I decided it then only that be it a son or daughter, I will make my children cricketers,” Sanjeev said.

In a thrilling third youth ODI, the India U-19 boys retained their composure to defeat Australia by seven runs, completing a 3-0 series whitewash on Thursday. The first and second Youth ODIs were won by the Indian junior side by seven and nine wickets, respectively.

India, batting first, amassed 324 for 8 thanks to half-centuries from captain Mohamed Amaan (71 off 72 balls) and opener Rudra Patel (77 off 81 balls). Lower-order batsmen like Hardik Raj (30 off 18 balls) and Chetan Sharma (18 not out off 9 balls) made valuable contributions that put the side in a dominant position.

Australia, in response, was making good progress at 241 for 2 in the 41st over, with twin centurions Oliver Peake (111) and Steven Hogan (104) adding 180 runs for the third wicket stand. However, at the end of the allotted 50 overs, they could only muster 317 for 7.

The two slow left-arm orthodox spinners, Hardik (3/55) and Kiran Chormale (2/59), combined to create a mini-slump by dismissing the two set batsmen and keeper Alex Lee Young in rapid succession. They were outstanding in the final overs.

India were back in the game like never before as they stifled the run-flow towards the end after being 241 for 2 at the conclusion of the 45th over, which turned into 267 for 5.

While Aidan O’ Connor (35 off 20 balls) did use the long handle to a good effect, Bengal fast bowler Yudhajit Guha (2/40) bowled well enough in the last over to prevent the Aussies from crossing the finishing line.

Brief Scores: India U-19 324/8 in 50 overs (Mohamed Amaan 71, Rudra Patel 77, Hardik Raj 30).

Australia 317/7 in 50 overs (Oliver Peake 111, Steven Hogan 104, Hardik Raj 3/55, Kiran Chormale 2/59).

South Delhi Superstarz opener Priyank Arya showed a impressive knock of 107 not out against Purani Dilli 6 on August 26. Arya became the first player to be the centurion of the Delhi Premier League (DPL) 2024. As Arya continues run-scoring spree in the tournament, he stated that he wanted to score the first century since Arya will be remembered forever.

“Feels really good because the first player who scores a century in a new league is remembered forever, I am thinking of making more centuries,” Arya told.

“In the beginning, it felt difficult, the more I stayed at the crease the more I could contribute to myself and the team, I was just thinking to play all 20 overs,” he added.

Arya was happy with the game he played with the bat. He hit nine fours and seven sixes in his time of 55-ball 107, and contributed in helping the South Delhi Superstarz post a massive total of 235/3.

“I was thinking I should play all 20 overs I was getting out earlier in previous matches, I wanted to carry the team with my strength,” he said.

Arya said he has been trained under the watch of Gautam Gambhir during his childhood Under-19 days along with Sanjay Bhardwaj, who calls him everyday to talk with him.

“I have had one coach since childhood, Sanjay Bhardwaj sir, he talks to me every day as to how to play my game and go about my routine,” he said.

Ahead of the U-19 World Cup final, while the cricketing fraternity is busy choosing their ‘favourite’ for the marquee final, India skipper Prithvi Shaw believes his side’s pacers hold them in good stead versus Australia. Interestingly, both India and Australia are the most successful teams in the tournament’s history — with three titles each — and would look to go the distance once again at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui.

“Whenever the team’s needed them, they (fast bowlers) have provided the breakthroughs. They’re ready whenever I ask them to bowl. They’ve good intensity as well, their fitness is great as well. All of them — Kamlesh (Nagarkoti), (Ishan) Porel, (Shivam) Mavi. It helps us all to have a good attitude in the field, we’re all really pumped up when our fast bowlers do well,” Shaw stated on the eve of the summit clash.

Shaw, however, remains undeterred by India’s batting lineup’s minimal exposure due to the top order’s sublime form. “I have confidence that even if we get one partnership, we can take charge of the match and take the score to 250-300. If you look at our match against Australia too, we put up a good total, even though we lost a couple of wickets after an early partnership. The middle order also controlled the innings well,” Shaw added.

The Indian skipper, though, was quick to point out Australia’s upward spiral since their tournament-opener defeat versus India (by 100 runs). “They (Australia) are a good side, it will be challenging for us even though they have lost against us in the first game. They have got a better side right now. We will stick to our process and will try to execute it on the field,” said Shaw.

Touted as Indian cricket’s next superstar, Shaw has been in rollicking form. He has amassed 232 runs in four innings with a best score of 94 against Australia in India’s first match.

“I can’t actually describe myself but I think so far I am really doing good. If you see the results, the batting and bowling and the intensity on the pitch and the attitude how the boys are behaving, it’s a good sign till now,” Shaw signed off.

Rameez Raja believes Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) should follow the footsteps of BCCI and appoint someone like Rahul Dravid for grooming Under-19 cricketers. The forthcoming U-19 World Cup will commence from January 13 in New Zealand. Pakistan are placed in Group D alongside Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Ireland. Rameez backed the appointment of a reputed figure and cricketing icon like Dravid in grooming young cricketers ahead of a gruelling international career. Dravid has been serving as India A and U-19 coach since 2015. Under his tenure, India had finished runners-up in the last U-19 World Cup, losing to West Indies in the final.

Rameez stated: “I think the PCB should also consider appointing a former Test player who is well reputed and respected with the national junior team just like India has done in the case of Rahul Dravid. I don’t think winning is as important as recognising individuals who are talented and then educating and grooming them. India will benefit from the presence of someone like Dravid who is a role model for youngsters. Pakistan should also think on these lines because at the under-16 and 19 levels identifying individuals who can be good investments for the future is very important.”
