Afghanistan star all-rounder Gulbadin Naib has broken Code of Conduct during the 2nd T20I against Zimbabwe and has been heavily fined by the ICC. Gulbadin was found guilty of disagreeing with one of umpire’s decision as Afghanistan registered a 50-run victory.

For this offence, Gulbadin, who has been recently released by Delhi Capitals before IPL 2025, has been given a fine and also received a demerit point. This is the first offence within a 24-month period.

Also to be noted, Naib has been fined 15 per cent of his match fee for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct when facing Zimbabwe in the 2nd T20I. The incident happened during the 11th over of Zimbabwe’s inning when Naib expressed his objection towards one of the decision given by the umpire regarding an LBW appeal against Tashinga Musekiwa.

Gulbadin’s action violated Article 2.8 of ICC Code of Conduct, which forbids showing dissent towards an umpire’s decision. O top of the fine, he has also been given a demerit point, which marks his first offense within a 24-month period.

Though Naib showed frustration towards the umpire’s decision by bowing in an action as if praying, and requesting a review. However, he then recognised his mistake and accepted the sanction and hence avoiding a formal eharing.

On the third legit ball of the over, Sikandar got dismissed. To end the over, Naveen bowled another wide and then gave up three singles. The Afghan pacer eventually bowled four wide balls when attempting to bowl yorkers.

After this long over of 13 balls, the target for the team got reduced to 38 off 30 balls, all because Naveen had given out 19 runs in a single over. Final numbers of Naveen were 4-1-33-3.

Former Indian cricketer Akash Chopra has said that the teams are not challenged enough in the bilateral series a lot of times and that the tri-nation series might be exactly what is needed to make the game more interesting. He further said that if the series do not turn out to be competitive enough, they do not give out the desire outcomes to the broadcasters, who then turn to shorter formats.

India is currently playing a three-match T20I series against Bangladesh, where the Men In Blue comfortably won the first two matches.

When asked if tri-nation series should be played considering the declining interest in bilaterals, Akash replied positively.

You are not challenged enough in bilaterals at times. Let’s be honest, whichever team comes to India plays ordinary cricket. So can tri-nation or quadrangular series be brought back? There is no existential crisis at the moment because the broadcasters are giving money and you are playing,” Chopra said while speaking on his YouTube channel.

However, a day will come when the broadcaster will also raise their hands and say they are not getting the returns for their bucks, that they are paying but not gaining that much since the matches are not competitive as your team wins in 10 overs even if your main players don’t play,” Chopra added.

Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi believes that winning over Pakistan in the ODI World Cup 2023 was the most significant win for the team.

Afghanistan defeated Pakistan for the first time during the ODI World Cup held in Chennai. However, the campaign for them ended after they were defeated by Australia with three wickets.

Following their loss in ODI World Cup, Afghanistan took their revenge in the as they defeated the Australian team in the T20 World cup.

In an interaction with Shubhankar Mishra on his YouTube channel, Shahidi was asked to chose one whose victory he took more significant against Australia in 2024 T20 World Cup or the win against Pakistan. The win over Pakistan was picked by Shahidi as the people were very happy for that victory.

“Both wins were important, but the victory over Pakistan in the ODI World Cup was monumental; people were incredibly happy,” he said.

Afghani star cricketer Rashid Khan revealed that he was playing while facing a hamstring injury in the 2nd ODI against South Africa. For Afghanistan, Rashid was the pick of bowlers since he picked up five-wicket play which helped hosts in beating South Africa by 177 runs.

Rashid mad his comeback in national team after missing his spot in the one off test against New Zealand due to back injury. However, the Test match supposed to take place in Greater Noida got washed away due to wet outfield and consistent rains.

“Fifer after long time and I had a hamstring injury as well since a month, but I wanted to stay in the ground and help the team. It was a big opportunity for us to win an important series, so I wanted to contribute. I enjoy bowling with youngsters, I share my ideas with them and the best part is they listen and learn quickly. And now they have started to deliver. Great to see youngsters coming up and showcasing their talent. (On playing with a hamstring injury) We had a big opportunity to win a series and the love for the game pushes you to play, I thought I was able to bowl and stay on the field, good job done by the physio as well” said Rashid.

The historic one-off Test between Afghanistan and New Zealand had not seen a single ball being bowled in four days. Consistent rain, poor drainage, and lack of resource did not allow the game to continue. As a result, the game on Day 4 was called off on the morning of September 12. Even the ground staff was unable to cover the entire ground in order to save it from consistent rainfall.

The ICC Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process applies to all the venues who hold any match. After each match, the referee has the job of completing the Pitch and Outfield Reports form and then send it to ICC Senior Cricket Operations Manager, which will include comments on the pitch and outfield from the captains o two teams who played and the umpires who have officiated in specific matches. This is going to be followed to review the Noida stadium as well.

The Match Referee has caused the pitch and/or outfield as ‘unsatisfactory’ or ‘unfit’, demerit points will be given on the venue as stated on the venue as stated in the guidelines for rating pitches and outfields. 1 demerit point will be given to the venue if it is rated unfit and the demerit points will go up to 3. If a venue gets 6 or more demerit points, it will lose its rights to host an international match.

The demerit points remain active for 5 years and if a venue gets 6 points in that period, it will be suspended for 12 months. If the points reach 12, it will be suspended for 2 years.

There might be chances ICC referee may give demerit points to both the pitch and ground, so this process will be followed to give demerit points to Noida stadium. If it gets declared unfit with 6 points, the venue will be suspended. There are also chances of referees menti0oning about the basic facilities and resources in the reports.

Afghanistan is in dangerous waters after harsh remarks made by an unidentified Afghanistan Cricket Board official about the Greater Noida Stadium’s conditions and the BCCI’s alleged rejection of the ACB’s request for alternative venues were extensively covered by several Indian media outlets.

Afghanistan has been offered locations to train and host matches outside of their unstable country by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), including the northern Indian cities of Lucknow and Dehradun.

Although they expressed disappointment, Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) officials have refrained from criticizing for fear that it may damage their relationship with the BCCI.

“You won’t believe me, but this stadium isn’t as nice as the ones in Afghanistan. Our infrastructure has been better during the last five years. The Lucknow Stadium was our initial option, while Dehradun was our second. The BCCI informed us that both states are hosting their own T20 competitions after our pleas were denied. We were left with no other option and this was the only ground accessible,” an ACB official was cited as saying.

However, Afghanistan officials made an official statement to reporters following the cancellation of the second day’s play.

The manager of the ACB international cricket team, Menhajuddin Naz, told reporters, “Everyone, including the ground authorities, have worked hard.”

“Even if it had been any other venue, they would have struggled to get it back on time.”

“We selected Greater Noida instead of Bengaluru and Kanpur.” Naz stated that Greater Noida was chosen above Kanpur, a city in the north, or Bengaluru, a city in the south, as the host city for the Test.

“We decided on Greater Noida since it offered the most logistical convenience. It had greater connectivity from Kabul and was closer to Delhi, according to Naz.

Play was canceled for a second day in a row at the Greater Noida field due to ineffective attempts to dry out the pitch ahead of the one-off Test between Afghanistan and New Zealand. The grounds crew covered sections of the field, dug up and replaced a soggy outfield portion with dry soil and new turf, and utilized electric fans to dry the damp patches. Umpires declared the conditions unplayable despite their attempts, with one calling the situation “a huge mess”.

The location, which is hosting its maiden Test, has drawn criticism for its subpar amenities and outdated drainage system. Even while Monday and Tuesday were sunny, the outfield remains drenched from the monsoon season’s persistent rain. Afghanistan has previously hosted multiple international matches at this location since 2017. New Zealand, who were unable to train prior to the Test, set up nets on the site and carried out drills.

Tim Southee’s New Zealand, who will next play two Tests in Sri Lanka before returning to play three more against India, has not responded publicly.

A soggy outfield, poor drainage, deplorable conditions at the Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex, and appalling facilities all conspired to cause the historic first-day Test between Afghanistan and New Zealand to be called off on Monday before a ball was bowled.

The first Test between the two countries had been impacted by rain, preventing New Zealand from finishing even one practice session.

Other than a few showers during the night, Monday’s rain had minimal impact on the location. However, the lack of contemporary amenities made it difficult for the inexperienced ground crew to prepare the field, and on opening day, the sawdust sack saw more activity than the players.

Up to six inspections were carried out by the umpires during the day. Along with all-rounders Mitchell Santner and Rachin Ravindra, several other New Zealand players also stepped onto the field to inspect the conditions, including captain Tim Southee.

However, there were multiple places inside the 30-yard circle, and the mid-on and mid-wicket areas appeared to be of concern.

The match appeared to be about to start at one time when the sun was shining brightly, but that hope was scuppered at around 2pm IST when Kane Williamson stumbled onto the ground.

As the groundsmen labored, even Afghanistan’s coach Jonathan Trott appeared disappointed. For whatever reason, the Super Soppers didn’t start working until after 1pm.

At 4 p.m., the play for the day was finally canceled. Tomorrow’s toss has been rescheduled for 9 a.m., and instead of 10 a.m., there will be 98 overs per day for the next four days.

The ground crew had to use table fans to dry the field in preparation for Afghanistan’s training sessions before the Test.

The lack of contemporary amenities affected activities off the field as much as on the field itself. The location lacks sufficient fan seating as well as a media stand.

Significant annoyances for the authorized media also included a shortage of power, water, and access to a female restroom. There was no public notice system, so the fans were also in the dark about what was happening.

Between the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) and the stadium authority, there was a dearth of communication and overall mismanagement.

“We’re never coming back here because of this enormous mess. According to an ACB official, “The players are also not happy with the facilities here.”

“We had spoken with the concerned people well in advance and were assured by the stadium guys that everything will be in order (pertaining to the media facilities),” he added,

The Test is an ICC-affiliated competition even though it isn’t a part of the World Test Championship.

The Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority, which oversees the venue, held a Duleep Trophy pink ball match there in 2016.

However, because to match-fixing during corporate matches, the BCCI prohibited it in September 2017. Since then, no BCCI-affiliated match has taken place here.

Afghanistan used to use this stadium as their home field.

Nothing has altered since our arrival. Not a single bit has improved,” stated another ACB representative.

Hasmatullah Shahidi, the captain of Afghanistan, had pleaded with the BCCI and ACB to set up “a good home venue” for the squad prior to the Test.

“India is our home, and when we host teams, other nations have played more cricket here,” Shahidi said on the eve of the one-off Test against New Zealand.

“Hopefully, we will get a good venue here in India and if we restrict ourselves to one venue, it will be effective for us. Hopefully, the ACB and the BCCI will get us a good venue,” he had said.

While the stadium doesn’t fall under the UP Cricket Association, it will be interesting to see whether BCCI Vice President Rajiv Shukla gets things in order.
