Indian skipper Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the T20I format after India won the T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados. Rohit retired from T20Is and continues to play the game in the Indian Premier League (IPL). A few months after India won an ICC trophy, Rohit stated that he retired to make way for other players in the format.

“The only reason I retired from T20Is is because I have had my time, I enjoyed playing the format, I played for 17 years, I did well and all of that,” said Rohit.

“Then, you won the (2024) World Cup. This was the best time for me to decide that ‘okay, this is now time for me to move on and look after the other things’. There are a lot of good players who can do well for India.”

Rohit also said how he still has what it takes to represent India in all formats. He also told about how he trains his mind in order to meet the high standards of fitness to play international cricket.

“It (decision to retire from T20Is) was not because I felt anything. I just felt this was the right time. I could still play all three formats easily. That’s why I say fitness is in your mind, how you train your mind.”

“I believe everything is in the mind. I am a person who has got a lot of self-belief because I know that I can control my mind when I have to. Sometimes it’s not easy. I know most of the time I can do that. If you tell your body that you are young, you can do this, you can do that, (then) of course you can,” Rohit concluded.

Young Indian batter Jemimah Rodrigues displayed good potential in the Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) 2024, though she is yet to make a big hit and make a significant score.

Representing the Trinbago Knight Riders, Jemimah has scored 42 runs in 2 matches, with an average of 24 and a strike rate of 120.

Since they have lost both of their matches, the Trinbago Knight Riders are currently at the bottom of the table with negative run rate of -1.171. Their campaign started with them facing a 7-wicket defeat to Barbados Royals. After that, Trinbago Knight Riders suffered their other defeat to Guyana Amazon Warriors by 8 wickets.

Since they are running on a negative run rate, the Knight Riders are in a do-or-die situation. If they want to have any possibilities of making it to the finals, the Knight Riders have to win their next match against Lauren Winfield-Hill’s Warriors.

Jemimah previously shared her intentions to use the WCPL as a form of platform to regain her rhythm and flow, along with preparing for the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup.

“These are the matches that I’m actually going to get before going and playing like proper team matches [T20 World Cup],” Jemimah said

Arshdeep Singh, the left-arm pacer for India, was hailed with a hero’s welcome upon his return to his hometown, complete with garlands, a procession, and bhangra from his supporters.

Arshdeep played a crucial role in India’s title triumph in the recent T20 World Cup, taking 17 wickets to lead the wicket-takers’ list with Afghanistan pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi.

“I want to play all formats but at the moment I just want to enjoy the moment and spend time with my family,” Arshdeep told PTI Videos while travelling in an open vehicle.

“I am feeling very happy. I thank everyone for giving me so much love,” added Arshdeep.

Chandigarh broke out into jubilation as Arshdeep arrived in the evening from Mumbai, where he had participated in a victory parade alongside his teammates. The fans had on Team India jerseys and were waving the Tri-colour.

In an exciting final at Bridgetown, Barbados, on Saturday, India, captained by Rohit Sharma, defeated South Africa by seven runs. They also made history by becoming the first team to win the T20 World Cup without dropping a match.

After 17 years, it was India’s second-ever T20 World Cup victory and their first global championship in 11 years.

But because Hurricane Beryl left them stranded in Barbados, their trip back to India was postponed.

Upon their arrival in New Delhi in chartered flight, The ‘Men In Blue’ were given a grand reception over breakfast by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his official residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg.

As the team mena made a victory parade on an open bus to the Wankhede Stadium later that evening, a sea of spectators flocked to Mumbai’s Marine Drive to welcome them.

India will have to wait further to welcome their heroes as Rohit Sharma’s World Cup-winning team’s homecoming has been further delayed. About 70 people of India, including Indian cricketers, their families, support staff, and top officials of BCCI have been stuck in Bridgetown and Barbados for last 3 days. They won the World Cup title on June 29 (IST), but have not been able to return home dur to Hurricane Beryl.

The Barbados airport remained closed for 2 days. It opened again inly on Wednesday morning (IST), but the Indian team will further have to wait to leave the premise. The special charter flight arranged by BCCI, which was expected to reach the Grantley Adams International Airport in Barbados at around 3 am on Wednesday (IST), has had a delay of four hours.

The original plan was to take a flight to the USA from Barbados and then fly straight to India via the UAE, but since the hurricane caused a delay of two days, the BCCI decided to arrange a charter flight to ensure the entire team along with their families reach home together. The flight had to be arranged from USA, which could be the possible reason for the delay.

The flight was expected to leave Bridgetown at 6 pm (local time) and land in Delhi on Wednesday at 7:45 pm (IST), but the Indian team is now most likely to reach New Delhi by 5 am (IST) on Thursday.

At 8:30 am on Wednesday, BCCI shared a post on X that said “It’s coming home”, suggesting that the team might be ready to depart from Barbados.

Upon their arrival, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will welcome the players, but the schedule of that event has not yet been decided.

The T20 World Cup-winning Indian cricket team’s departure from the Caribbean island has been delayed as the charter flight is yet to arrive here.

After being detained here for the last three days owing to hurricane Beryl, the Indian squad, its support staff, the players’ families, a few board officials, and Indian media are scheduled to return on an Air India special charter flight called AIC24WC — Air India Champions 24 World Cup.

After defeating South Africa in the championship match on Saturday by a thrilling seven runs, the team captained by Rohit Sharma emerged victorious.

The flight, which took off from New Jersey, USA on July 2, is expected to land in Barbados around 2 am local time.

The flight is currently scheduled to depart Barbados at 4:30 a.m. (local time). If there are no more delays in their departure, the team will land in Delhi on Thursday at 6 am (IST), after a 16-hour flight.

On Tuesday, the Grantley Adams International Airport reopened for business. The Indian team was originally supposed to depart on July 2 at around 6 p.m. local time and arrive on Wednesday at 7:45 p.m. (IST).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to congratulate the players, however the exact time of the ceremony is still pending.

Hurricane Beryl is presently approaching Jamaica as a Category 4 hurricane, downgraded from a Category 5 storm.

After the announcement by Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley that she expects the airport here to reopen in the “next six to 12 hours” due to a category 4 hurricane, the victorious Indian cricket team in the T20 World Cup is scheduled to return home on a charter flight on Tuesday evening.

Hurricane Beryl has left the Rohit Sharma-led team, its support staff, a few BCCI officials, and the players’ families detained here for the last two days. The squad defeated South Africa by seven runs in the championship match, and they won the title on Saturday.

According to a source, the group is scheduled to depart Bridgetown on Wednesday at 7.45 p.m. (IST) and arrive in Delhi at 6 p.m. (local time). Prime Minister Narendra Modi would later congratulate the players, however the exact time of the ceremony is still pending.

Earlier, Mottley gave an update on the situation here.

“I don’t want to speak in advance of it, but I’ve literally been in touch with the airport personnel and they’re doing their last checks now and we want to resume to normal operations as a matter of urgency,” Mottley, who has been overseeing relief operations on the ground, told PTI.

“There are a number of people who were due to leave yet last night late or today or tomorrow morning. And we want to make sure that we can facilitate those persons, so I would anticipate that within the next six to 12 hours that the airport will be open,” she said.

On Monday, a ferocious storm and wind gusts pounded Barbados and neighboring islands. With a population of about three lakh, the nation has been under lockdown since Sunday night.

“We have been working to ensure that everyone is safe in Barbados, Barbadians and all of the visitors, of course, who came for cricket World Cup. We were very blessed that the storm did not come on land.

“The hurricane was 80 miles south of us, which limited, the level of damage on shore. But as you can see, we’ve had costal, infrastructure and costal assets have been badly damaged,” Mottley said.

“It could have been a lot worse, but now is the time to do the recovery and the cleanup.”

The window to leave Bridgetown is a narrow one as Mottley revealed that “we have another hurricane coming on Wednesday.”

She believed that after ending an 11-year title drought, the Indians, who have remained at their hotel since winning the trophy, will be in high spirits despite the lockdown.

“I’m sure that in spite of the passage of the hurricane, that they would have been in very, very, very good mood and spirit and to win in the manner that they won on Saturday. I think they will be floating on air for a little time,” she quipped.

The victorious Indian cricket team’s return to home soil has been delayed significantly as a hurricane-like situation in Barbados has forced the authorities to shut down air travel, forcing the players to remain indoors in their hotels. After the T20 World Cup final concluded on Saturday, the team was expected to fly out on Sunday, however, even on Monday, there is no clarity over their return schedule.

As per a report in India Today, the Barbados airport had to be shut down, with all flights being cancelled due to hurricane Beryl’s expected arrival. The said hurricane is Category 4 (the second most severe) and hence no risk can be taken with regards to air travel. The travel plans, hence, can’t be finalized over the next 24 hours.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary, Jay Shah was asked about a potential felicitation ceremony for the players in India. While he admitted that certain arrangements need to be made, but it will all happen once the team jets off from Barbados to India. For now, everyone remains stuck.

“Like you we are also stuck here. After the travel plans are clear, we will think about the felicitation,” Shah told PTI.

When the formidable Indian squad, eager to break through its long title drought, takes against a South African side that has never experienced winning in the T20 World Cup final here on Saturday, it will be imperative to maintain emotional control.

India’s performance in the tournament is strikingly similar to their performance in their home ODI World Cup last year, when they easily advanced to the final before Australia outperformed them on the grand stage.

They have been by far the best team in the tournament and are undefeated here as well. Above all, they have an elusive trophy this time around and Australia, who has been through a lot, isn’t standing in their way.

South Africa enters the final with their own aspirations and goals, having only won once in ICC competitions—the Champions Trophy in 1998.

The Proteas, who have been called chokers for the majority of their international cricket career, will be eager to permanently dispel that negative reputation at Kensington Oval.

Following India’s crushing of England in the Guyana semifinal, the general opinion seems to be that Rohit Sharma and his team are the clear favourites.

Taking into account the composition of India’s team and the circumstances in the Caribbean, it is a reasonable observation. They would be expected to erase the pain of November 19, 2023, when Australia’s Pat Cummins silenced more than a lakh Ahmedabad supporters in the crucial final.

“I know India have had their issues in the ICC finals for a long time but I just don’t see South Africa posing a challenge. India have been the best team of the tournament so far and man to man South Africa are a weaker side,” a World Cup winning former captain told PTI on the flight from Guyana to Barbados.

It would also be the ideal farewell for departing coach Rahul Dravid, who is about to have an incredible final farewell as coach. Dravid was an extremely sad man in the Caribbean during the 2007 ODI World Cup when he captained India following the team’s early elimination.

A major factor in India’s final berth has been their ability to adjust to the competition’s conditions. They are in their first T20 World Cup final in ten years. Regarding its planning for the tournament, the team management has been quite transparent.

Prior to using Kuldeep Yadav as the winning pitcher on the spin-friendly surfaces in the Caribbean, they used three specialized pacers on the unproven wickets in New York.

India will undoubtedly use the same starting eleven, but it will be looking to two of its important players to perform well in the winner-take-all match.

Rohit, has shown the way to other batters in the side and his innings will hold massive importance in the final.

The captain would also like to see Shivam Dube excel in the high pressure game, having given middling returns in the tournament so far. His battles against spinners Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi could make a big impact.

On the bowling front, India have nothing to worry about with both pacers and spinners performing their roles to perfection.

They only had one day to recover after coming here immediately following their match against England in the semi-final, as has been the case since the Super 8s campaign began at this exact location.

However, South Africa received an additional day before the final and will begin training on Friday.

With a decisive victory against Afghanistan in Trinidad, the Proteas are sniffing victory. Unlike India, however, they have nothing to lose given they have never been in a World Cup final.
They would be looking for runs from Quinton de Kock and Reeza Hendricks, who open the innings together. De Kock, in particular, can put a lot of pressure on the opposition when he’s playing well. Super 8s captain Aiden Markram is set for a huge one, but he was unable to generate much of an impact against the stronger teams.

One of the most potent hitters in the game, Heinrich Klaasen, needs runs too, and in order to get them, he will have to deal with the spin threat throughout the middle overs.

Although South Africa’s pace department has been on fire, it’s unclear how much of an influence this will have in this day game. Although Shamsi and Maharaj are potent weapons, Indian hitters won’t be afraid of them.

There is a high chance of rain on Saturday but the ICC has kept a reserve day for the all-important fixture.
