Legendary India cricketer Sachin Tendulkar reunited with his childhood friend Vinod Kambli at the memorial ceremony for coach Ramakant Achrekar in Mumbai on Tuesday. Both Tendulkar and Kambli were pupils of Achrekar who honed their cricketing skills under his guidance.

Tendulkar and Kambli are regarded as 2 of the greatest students of Achrekar, who went on to make their debut for the Indian team at remarkably young ages. The duo made headlines thanks to their incredible batting prowess and were even involved in a mammoth 664-run partnership in school cricket.

In a video that is now making rounds on social media, Tendulkar can be seen walking over to Kambli to greet him as the duo have a brief chat at the event organized for unveiling the memorial for their childhood coach.

The reunion between Tendulkar and Kambli has drawn significant attention and concern from fans, particularly due to Kambli’s health struggles, including a recent video of this year where he can be seen struggling to walk.

Apart from them, the event was also graced by former cricketers and Achrekar’s pupils, Paras Mambhrey, Pravin Amre, Balwinder Singh Sandhu, Sanjay Bangar and Samir Dighe.

The post “Classic case of…”: Paras Mhambrey gives his take on Umran Malik’s dramatic India fall appeared first on Cricket Country.

]]>
Indian pacer Umran Malik came into the spotlight in the IPL 2022 season by taking 22 wickets for the Sunrisers Hyderabad It paved the way for his India debut, and he impressed with 24 wickets from 18 matches. During the ODI against Sri Lanka in January of 2023, Umran clocked 156 kph recorded as the fastest-ball ever bowled by an Indian. The pacer had other special moments like bowling a 151 kph ripper against Bangladesh breaking batter Najmul Hossain Shanto’s stumps into 2.

However, Umran’s stay in the Indian team came to an abrupt end and he last bowled for India back in July 2023. Even his IPL form saw a huge dip as he only picked up 5 wickets from 8 matches last year and played just a single game this season. Besides, less than 24 hours ago, Umran was also ruled out of the Duleep Trophy India B squad for the first round of matches due to an illness.

According to former India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, Umran’s is a classic example of what happens to a bowler without much red-ball bowling experience. With just 12 First-Class matches behind him, Umran has struggled to stay relevant, losing his position in the pecking order to the likes of Arshdeep Singh and Mukesh Kumar.

“Umran is a classic case of who has not played enough red-ball cricket. He came to the reckoning through the IPL. That’s 24 balls in a game. Sometimes you don’t even get to bowl 24 balls. The amount of pressure of bowling 24 balls is not like the red ball. I feel this (T20) is not a format to judge a prospect,” Mhambrey told The Indian Express.

“We made sure that he played Ranji Trophy and red ball cricket. The moment you will play one season, you will understand your bowling. Physically you will be tested in different phases of the game. Sometimes you will have to be on the ground for six sessions. And to be able to bowl with that intensity when the last session is coming up, you will be physically and mentally challenged. And you need to go through that,” Mhambrey added.

The post Surykumar Yadav’s First thought as India’s T20I captain- Rahul Dravid’s team, not Gambhir’s appeared first on Cricket Country.

Though Gautam Gambhir has given the final push, the idea of promoting Suryakumar Yadav to the leadership role was first brought out during Rahul Dravid’s tenure. One of the main reason for which Suryakumar went ahead of Hardik Pandya in the race of T20I captaincy was that the team management felt the need to appoint a captain who is likely to stay free of injuries for a long period of time, along with being available for all the matches.

The foundation of putting Surya as the captaincy was first put down after the ODI World Cup in 2023. With the coaches and selectors not being sure about Hardik Pandya’s return, as he suffered an ankle injury during the early phase of the World Cup, Suryakumar Yadav was given the role to lead the T20I side for the home series against Australia. With Pandya being injured along with seniors being put to rest to recover from the heartbreaking defeat to Australia in the final. Surya did a fine job leading India to a victory in the series by 4-1.

Former Indian bowling coach Paras Mhambrey told about the thought process behind coach Dravid, team management and the selectors in giving Surya the leader role.

“First and foremost, when you pick a captain, you expect the captain to play all the games in that format. We, the coaches and selectors, have always felt that here’s a guy who’s gonna have a long future in the T20 format. He has mastered that skill. One of the best in this format. He and Klaasen are maybe one or two in T20Is now based on their current form. Just the pure impact he has on winning games for India is phenomenal,” said Mhanbrey.

Surya has captained Mumbai in domestic cricket, though, before the Australia and South Africa series, he had no experience in leading the team at higher levels. Unlike Rishabh pant or Hardik Pandya who were the other candidates, Surya did not even have the opportunity to lead an IPL team. Though, both the old and the new team management felt that Surya was best to replace Rohit Sharma after his retirement

With Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach and Suryakumar Yadav as the new T20I skipper, the Indian cricket team is ready to start a new chapter.

The hero of the 2024 T20 World Cup, Suryakumar Yadav, has been called up to captain India for the three T20 Internationals against Sri Lanka, starting on July 27.

Experts surmise that the Indian team management’s choice to name Surya as the T20I captain was a major factor. They wanted a captain who could play every game and avoid injuries for an extended amount of time.

But given Hardik’s past chronic injury history, it didn’t seem likely that he would be selected as captain.

Another explanation might be his relationships with younger players, who respect Surya and find it easy to approach him.

Former India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey claims that former India head coach Rahul Dravid had the idea to name Surya the captain of the T20 Internationals.

Just the pure impact he has on winning games for India is phenomenal,” Mhambrey told HT.

Surya had captained Mumbai in domestic cricket before, but prior to the Australia and South Africa series, he had no prior experience at the highest level of team leadership.

Mhambrey mentioned Every member of the team gets along well with Suryakumar Yadav.

“He’s been with the team. I’ve seen him interact with the young guys. On one hand, we had Rohit and Virat, guys who are stalwarts, and then we have Surya, who is experienced but probably even closer to the youngsters. He is very friendly with everyone. He has that respect from the younger lot. The youngsters need to interact with him, he’s good at it. So, has a good bond with everyone in the team. He has come up through the ranks, so he has a lot of experience and is a smart cricketer,” the former India bowling coach.

He added, “He has a lot of cricket left in him. He has a good four-five years of cricket left in him. With all this, I think he is a great choice.”

The post “If we play 4 seamers…”: Ex-India coach on Arshdeep Singh’s test debut appeared first on Cricket Country.

With 17 wickets in T20 World Cup 2024 and finishing the campaign as the joint highest wicket-taker, Arshdeep Singh has definitely proved himself on the big stage. The Indian Team has had to wait for a long time to get a quality left-arm pacer since Zaheer Khan bid adieu to international cricket. With Mohammed Shami recovering from his injury, he is expected to get more chances in ODI in the future. However, he is yet to be given a chance by India in red-ball cricket.

However, former India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, who saw Arshdeep’s growth from close quarters, believes that the pacer has a chance to make it to the India Test squad for Border-Gavaskar Trophy that will be contested later this year.

“It depends on the conditions. Maybe in Australia, if we play four seamers, he has a chance. To get one in India will be very difficult at the moment. But I feel he just needs a little more game time in first-class cricket, just to get control over his swing and also know how to use reverse-swing, which will be very handy. He has the swing that works for him. It is about maintaining fitness and working on it,” Mhambrey told Indian Express.

Mhambrey also praised Arshdeep’s performances in the shortest format and said that he handles the pressure well and also steps up his game on the big occasions.

“He has shown good maturity in terms of his plans in T20s. Be it bowling in the Powerplay or at the death, he has full clarity. If you look at his body language, he is really pushing, and that is a big plus. He is ready to handle pressure,” he added.

Gambhir, who proved himself in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 campaign as Kolkata Knight Riders(KKR) head coach, has shared his preferences with the BCCI. A report has now claimed the assistant coach of KKR Abhishek Nayar, is set to join Gambhir as an assistant coach.

Nayar’s name came at the top as soon as Team India’s hunt for Gambhir’s coaching staff began. Having worked with Nayar, Gambhir knows what he is capable of bringing to the table, and hence, was wanting to add him as the coach.

Gambhir has reportedly given names of L Balaji and R Vinay Kumar for bowling coach role, but the board in said to be not interested in the two.

Instead, BCCI wants someone who has a high-profile and someone who can guide youngsters like Mayank Yadav, Tushar Deshpande, Harshit Rana, etc.

As for the fielding coach, BCCI is reportedly looking to extend T Dilip’s stay. Dilip was a part of Rahul Dravid’s coaching staff but his tenure ended after T20 World Cup 2024.

“The Board also congratulates Mr. Paras Mhambrey(bowling coach), Mr. T Dilip(Fielding coach) and Mr. Vikram Rathour(batting coach) on a highly successful tenure. The BCCI values their contribution and wishes then the best going forward,” The BCCI release said.

India’s bowling coach Paras Mhambrey opened up on all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja’s poor performance in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 and said that it is a ‘team game’ one cannot expect all the players to come into form at once. In India’s first two matches of the T20 World Cup against Ireland and Pakistan, the 35 year-old hasn’t been able to deliver either with the bat or with the ball.

This is what Mhambrey had to say about Rahul Dravid and Vikram Rathour having conversations with Jadeja to motivate him.

“I think it’s a team game, right? It’s going to be 11 guys. You really don’t expect all of them coming into form. It’s going to be performed every game that will happen. For me, I personally feel whatever conversations Rahul and Vicky are having around, I’ve been pretty happy with it. And you expect a one-odd game out there.”

The bowling coach also said that an experienced player like Jadeja only needs one game to get his form back. He added that it’s not only Jadeja who is in a poor form but Shivam Dube and others are also struggling.

“It’s a long tournament. I think…someone like Jadeja, who’s so vastly experienced, he just needs a game out there to just get his roots around and feel around.”

“You can have one odd game and people will have conversations saying you are given a game, and you’re going to have one bad game. That’s fine, but the team will back you. And that’s what is important in a tournament like this,” added Mhambrey.
