The Australian team has announced their playing XI for the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar series which is set to be played in Sydney. The Baggy Greens have made a big change to their lineup by dropping veteran all-rounder Mitchell Marsh and handing Beau Webster his maiden Test cap.

Marsh has endured a tough series with his last five visits to the crease not resulting in any double-digit returns. He has also sent down just 33 overs and after pulling up sore post the Perth Test.

“Mitchy obviously hasn’t quite got the runs, and perhaps wickets this series. So we felt like it was time for a freshen up and Beau’s been great,” Cummins said on the eve of the Test.

“It’s a shame for Mitchy, because we know how much he brings to the team, but feel like now it’s a good week for Beau to get a chance,” Cummins added.

Meanwhile, Webster has been sensational in first-class cricket since March 2022, averaging 57.1 while also picking up 81 wickets as well. Last year, the 31-year-old became the first player since West Indian legend Sir Garfield Sobers to score 900 runs and take 30 wickets in a Sheffield Shield season.

“Really excited for Beau; the first thing he [Marsh] said was ‘I can’t wait to see Beau go out there and give it a crack’. Particularly here in Australia, I think when a batter misses out or gets dropped, it’s always seen as a big thing. But the way that (Australia coach Andrew McDonald), and the selectors and myself look at is we love pulling a squad of players together who we can call on at different times,” Cummins said.

India pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah once again came up with the goods on the first day of the fourth Border-Gavaskar series Test in Melbourne. The seamer picked up the massive wicket of in-form batter Travis Head and sent him back to the dugout for a duck.

Head was Bumrah’s second wicket of the day after he had already dismissed Usman Khawaja earlier in the day. The pacer also would go on to dismiss Mitchell Marsh later on in the day to get India back into the game.

Coming back to Head’s wicket, Bumrah bowled a brilliant good-length delivery from around the wicket that jagged back into the left-hander after pitching slightly outside the off-stump. Head wasn’t able to judge the bounce of the delivery and this mistake ended up shattering his stumps.

This was nothing short of a huge wicket for the Men in Blue as Head had terrorized their bowling lineup during the last 2 Tests which were held in Adelaide and Brisbane respectively.

The batter once again could have taken the game away from India if they had let him settle on the field, however Bumrah had other plans and ended up implementing them perfectly.

Legendary India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar was left ‘very, very disappointed’ by Yashasvi Jaiswal’s poor batting performance in the Brisbane Test. After Australia posted a mammoth total of 445 in their first innings, Indian openers Jaiswal and KL Rahul were expected to give India a fantastic start.

However, the complete opposite happened as Jaiswal lost his wicket on the second ball of the innings to pacer Mitchell Starc. The India batter clipped the delivery straight to Mitchell Marsh at square leg as his innings came to an end after scoring just 4 runs.

“It’s not the best of shots. You are facing 445 runs, then I think it’s important for you to get your eye in. It wasn’t even a half volley, and you have tried to flick that ball away, and it’s a simple catch. Very good field placement and very good captaincy by Pat Cummins for sure,” Gavaskar said on ABC Sport.

“But that’s not the best of shots that you expect from an opening bat, particularly when your opposition has got 445. Your job now for that one hour was to try and stay at the crease. Jaiswal, very very disappointing,” Gavaskar added.

“It wasn’t even a half volley. I can understand if it was a half volley; sometimes you are not able to keep it along the ground. It was a length ball, you were never going to be able to keep that ball down,” Gavaskar further added.

Before India’s innings commenced, Jaiswal smashed a drive towards Australia players’ team huddle, eventually hitting a Cricket Australia videographer and the batter was quick to apologize for it.

“Five minutes before Jaiswal got out, this is the shot he practiced that whip through mid-wicket, a wonderful shot and good balance. And then you go into the match and it’s the same shot but he goes aerial, just flicks it. It was the pressure of the game, in practice it’s perfect,” former England captain Michael Vaughan said on Fox Sports.

Australian star all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has stated that he wanted his teammates to laugh and be happy after he secured a fantastic catch and dismissed Shubman Gill on Day 3 of Gabba Test. Along with helping to the early batting collapse in their first inning, Marsh played brilliantly on the field, which included the catch to eliminate Yashasvi Jaiswal.

The Australian team was off to a good start with Marsh taking an easy catch at short mid-wicket on second ever ball of India’s innings. The team was only done celebrating the first wicket, when Marsh shocked everyone as he made a dive at gully and got a superb catch.

Marsh later acknowledged in the post-match conference that he had always been worried when fielding in gully and that the reason of his celebration was to have some fun within teammates who would repeatedly make fun of his agility.

I think it (the celebration) is just for enjoyment. Trying to provide a little bit of a laugh. The boys are always into me for how slow I move, and how I can’t jump or move on the field. So anytime I can do something like that, I probably didn’t even need to dive to be fair, but I thought it had a bit of a moment, and it is a fun team,” Marsh said.

Marsh made an incredible catch and ran towards Starc in an uncontrolled celebration, which soon got accompanied by the rest of the teammates who patted him as a form of congratulating him.

The second Test between Australia and India in Adelaide has been nothing short of eventful and has been filled with notable moments. One such moment happened when former India skipper Virat Kohli confronted umpires regarding a decision on Australia batter Mitchell Marsh.

The incident occurred during the 58th over on Day 2, when Marsh was struck on the pad by a delivery from Ravichandran Ashwin. The on-field umpire ruled it as not out which prompted skipper Rohit Sharma to opt for DRS.

Seeing the replays, it did look like that the ball had hit the pad first before hitting the bat. However, third umpire Richard Kettleborough believed there was no conclusive evidence to overturn the on-field decision and thus Marsh stayed at the crease.

Kohli, visibly frustrated, confronted on-field umpire Richard Illingworth over the decision and even compared it to a decision involving KL Rahul in the first Test in Perth. Rahul was given out despite replays suggesting that his bat had hit the pad rather than hitting the ball.

“KL’s was the same in Perth, two spikes. One was bat & one was pad,” Kohli told the umpire in the video.

Though Marsh would lose his wicket a little while later, it was Travis Head who ended up causing huge damage to the Indian bowlers and went on to play a brilliant knock of 140 before getting dismissed by Mohammed Siraj.

Australia got bundled out for 337, taking a healthy lead of 153 runs. The Indian bowlers will definitely be a little disappointed with their performance as they would have hoped to not let the lead go over 100 runs when they first came out to bowl.

The second Day of the Test match between India and Australia witnessed a controversial moment as Indian team saw an opportunity and went for a DRS appeal for LBW against Mitchell Marsh. The on-field umpire game the decision of not out but Indian team went for a DRS.

The third umpire said there is no solid evidence about the ball hitting the pad first, and the decision of the on-field umpire was kept. The replay from the front side, however, uncovered a different story.

Talking about the match, Marnus Labuschagne has finally gained his form as he scored a half-century as the team had an exchange with Indian pacers to reach 191 for 4 at tea break on Day 2 of the day. Nitish Kumar Reddy was the player to break Labuschagne’s innings.

Unlike the first day, Indian pacers targeted the stumps in the initial phase od the second day and were also taking good outcomes as there were some early wickets taken down.

Australian spinner Nathan Lyon believes that Mitchell Marsh is going to bowl to India in the upcoming Day-Night Test in Adelaide. The fitness of Marsh has been a point of concern after he experienced some problems when he was bowling in the opening Test in Perth.

Though Beau Webster has been taken as a potential replacement, Nathan expresses his belief in the ability of Marsh to come and perform with both the at and the ball. Lyon dismissed all the concerns about Marsh’s fitness and suggested that he is going to bowl in the Adelaide Test

I honestly think we’ll see Mitch Marsh bowl. I’m not concerned about Bison’s fitness if I’m being honest. He’s been brilliant for us since he’s come back in. He came back in that game in Leeds during the Ashes and has really dominated, so got full confidence in Bison. Happy to bowl his overs,” said Nathan.

Nathan has been a turning figure in Australian bowling attack, as he has often shared the workload with all-rounders Mitchell Marsh and Cameron Green. He has also taken the lead of spin bowlers in certain situations where the team has gone in with a pace attack, with help from non-bowlers.

Even without a dedicated all-rounder, Nathan has consistently taken the extra responsibility, especially as he has operated as the single spinner. Lyon has now shared his willingness to bowl extra overs if required, which highlights his commitment to the success of the team.

I’m very clear on my role within the team. Nothing really changes with me…if I can get the opportunity to bowl more overs, I’ll jump at it,” he said.

The 37-year-old ace spinner even spoke about the defeat against India in Perth as he openly accepted that Australian team did not play to their full extent in the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood was on Saturday ruled out of the 2nd Test of the Border-Gavaskar series against India in Adelaide due to an injury. In place of him, seamers Sean Abbott and Brendan Doggett have been added to the squad.

Hazlewood was undoubtedly Australia’s best bowler in the first Test in Perth, taking 5 wickets and not giving away many runs. While the uncapped Abbott and Doggett were drafted in, Hazelwood’s absence is likely to open the door for Scott Boland to play in the day-night Test that starts on Friday.

Boland last featured for the Baggy Greens in the Test match against England at Headingley in 2023. So far the pacer has only played 10 Tests for Australia.

Another player who isn’t likely to feature in the 2nd Test for Australia is all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, who pulled up sore following the Perth Test defeat. Fellow all-rounder Beau Webster is expected to replace him and make his debut in the format with the Adelaide Test.
