Former South African cricketer Daryll Cullinan had made some brutal comments on the fitness of Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, and had called him “overweight” and unfit for the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Cullinan called Rohit a “flat track bully”, labelling him as a liability for the team. Now, Cullinan’s teammate Herschelle Gibbs has reacted to Cullinan’s comments on Indian skipper.

Gibbs is Rohit’s former Indian Premier League (IPL) teammate, and has backed Cullinan’s comments saying that everything is clearly visible on TV and that he does not need to mention any names.

I don’t need to mention any names. You can see everything on TV. Those guys that are unfit and carrying a little bit extra, I mean, the whole world is there to see. I think it’s up to the individual. I was only a batter. Rohit doesn’t bowl. It’s up to the individual for me with regards to how much they want to contribute, not only in their own specific skill. If you’re a bowler or a batter, your duty is still to be fit and to try and make a contribution in the field,” Gibbs told InsideSport.

Gibbs also said that the players carry a little bit extra and suggested that the mindset for some of the specific tournaments comes out with how much the players want to contribute to the team.

Those guys that are unfit and carrying a little bit extra, I mean, the whole world is there to see. I don’t need to mention any names. The mindset should be, especially with a lot of T20 cricket and obviously with the Champions Trophy coming up, how much you want to contribute and make a difference for your team,” he added.

With the series currently levelled at 1-1, Indian team is preparing for the fourth Test against Australia, set to take place in Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) from December 26.

In the 2nd ODI match between the United States of America and Papua New Guinea, Jaskaran smashed 6-sixes in the final over of the first innings.

The right-handed batsman becomes the fourth men’s cricketer to achieve the feat in international cricket, only Yuvraj Singh, Herschelle Gibbs and Kieron Pollard had done it in the past.

Jaskaran played a match-winning knock of unbeaten 173 runs as Gaudi Toka who had a decent economical figure before the final over faced the wrath of some power-hitting. The 31-year-old smashed the first ball over long-on for a six, then he chose covers region to smash another. Toka felt some pressure and started bowling at full length, Jaskaran took full advantage of it and smashed three back to back sixes straight down the ground. He hit the final six over square leg to script history.

Jaskaran is now only the second batsman in history to smash 6-sixes in an over in ODI cricket after Herschelle Gibbs as the former Proteas did the same against the Netherlands in 2007 World Cup. While Yuvraj and Pollard achieved the feat in T20I cricket.

The 31-year-old also became the first batsman in USA cricket history to hit a century in ODI cricket. USA have so far participated in 17 ODI matches.

Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma – who is better? This is currently the biggest debate in the cricketing world identical to the Cristiano Ronaldo versus Lionel Messi comparisons? Both Kohli and Rohit have their loyal fanbase – who will go to any extent to get the edge over the other and that makes statistics very important for fans, especially from India.

Recently, former South African dasher Herschelle Gibbs gave his opinion and took a stand. He speaks about Kohli’s flick-off Archer in the second T20I when a fan asks him the question as to who is better. One of his followers asked him: “Who do you rate higher Rohit or Virat?”

As he was not expecting the South African to respond, the fan also wrote: “I know mostly u will avoid this question.”

It is surprising because Gibbs has recently shared the dressing-room with him at the Mumbai Indians and hence one would have thought he would be tempted to pick Rohit.

Gibbs had no doubt in his mind over his pick as he wrote: “Virat def(initely)”.

While Kohli is the No 1 batsman in the world in ODIs, Rohit is at No 2. Kohli recently edged Rohit to become the first cricketer to score 3000 T20I runs.

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma – who was rested for the first two T20Is against England – is expected to make a comeback in the XI in the third game. On the other hand, Kohli – who has not got a three-figure score since 2019 – got back among the runs in the second T20I at Ahmedabad where he took India over the line and helped the hosts level the five-match T20I series.

India takes on England in the third T20I on Tuesday at the Narendra Modi stadium.

Former South Africa cricketer Herschelle Gibbs has decided to put his bat, used during his team’s record-breaking chase against Australia, on auction to aid the fight against coronavirus pandemic.

Gibbs took to Twitter to made the announcement, he captioned the post: “Supersport showing the #438 game. The bat I used that day will be up for auction to raise funds for COVID-19. Kept it all these years.”

Back in 2006, the South African team wrote their name in the record books by chasing a ginormous target of 435 runs, thanks to Gibbs’ 175-run innings. This is the highest run chase ever in the ODI cricket.

In his 111-ball blitzkrieg, Gibbs smashed 21 fours and seven sixes. The now 46-year-old played 90 Tests, 248 ODIs and 23 T20 Internationals.

Australia captain Ricky Ponting was the other century-maker in the game with 164 off 105 balls.

Several athletes have come forward to help their respective country in its fight against the deadly virus. On April 27, AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli put their kits used in the 2016 Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Gujarat Lions on auction.

Both Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) batsmen, De Villiers and Kohli, had scored centuries in the match to cruise their side to a victory.

The money raised will be split in half between charities working in South Africa and India, De Villiers had said.

Former South African cricketer Herschelle Gibbs on Monday responded to ICC’s isolation game on Twitter, where he found his match in India skipper Virat Kohli as he was born in February.

Gibbs also mentioned that if he is in quarantine with Kohli, he would love to gym with him.

“In quarantine. Me and @imVkohli going toe to toe in the gym,” he wrote in his tweet which was a reply to ICC’s tweet.

In order to keep the fans entertained and engaged during this tough time, they came up with an isolation game. Based on their birth month, the fans have got to find their cricketer matchup with whom they can spend time with.

The next segment of this game is that based on the highest score, they can spend that much time (in hours) with that particular cricketer. The last digit of their phone number will help them decide what they will be doing with that player.

With Gibbs’ highest score being 228, he will get to spend ample time with Kohli in the gym.

With no cricketing action due to the coronavirus outbreak, the Indian cricketers are getting a much-deserved break after the grueling tour of New Zealand. The Indian skipper has been spending quality time with wife Anushka Sharma.

The Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) will keep a close watch on the pandemic situation and will give an update on March 24. BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has said that if the tournament has to happen it has to be a truncated one.

With the escalating COVID19 threat, people have been advised to stay indoors and clean as a precautionary measure. The number of positive cases in India has gone past the 400-mark and the number is on the rise.

Former South Africa cricketer Herschelle Gibbs has picked Virat Kohli as his favourite India cricketer. Kohli has been enjoying a dream run in which recently he led the Indian cricket team to a historic series win against New Zealand in the just concluded five-match Twenty20 International series.

When asked to pick his all-time favourite Indian cricketer on Twitter, Gibss replied: “Kohli.”

The Men in Blue have touched new heights under Kohli’s captaincy not only in Tests, but also in the limited-overs format.

Earlier praising Kohli, former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar had said that were a lot of similarities between the India skipper and former Pakistan skipper Imran Khan as they both instilled strong self-belief in their respective teams.

Manjrekar also said that Pakistan under Imran had found different ways of winning matches even when it seemed all was lost.

“India under Virat in NZ reminds me of Pakistan under Imran. Strong self belief as a team. Pakistan under Imran found different ways of winning matches, often from losing positions. That only happens when the self belief is strong,” he tweeted after India whitewashed the Kiwis in the T20I rubber.

India and New Zealand will next be involved in a three-match one-day international series which gets underway on February 5 at Seddon Park in Hamilton. The two-Test series begins on February 21 with the first match at the Basin Reserve in Hamilton.

Former South Africa opener Herschelle Gibbs on Tuesday recalled the ‘rowdy’ behaviour of some Pakistani fans during the home Test series in 2007 leading to a racist retort by him and a subsequent two-Test ban.

Asked by one of his Twitter followers about the comments he made at those fans, Gibbs wrote: “Called some rowdy Pakistan supporters animals. They forced my son and his mother out of their seats in front of the players viewing area”.

The ICC had banned Gibbs for two Tests for making racists remarks during the first Test of the series at Centurion. Gibbs had appealed against the ban but the ICC rejected it.

On the stump microphone, Gibbs was caught saying that Pakistani supporters were behaving “like bloody animals”.

Gibbs played 90 Tests and 248 ODIs for South Africa, score 6167 and 8094 runs respectively. He also featured in 23 T20 Internationals

Earlier, the 45-year-old Gibbs has vented his frustration with the local Bangladesh players for their inability to understand English. Gibbs is currently coaching the Sylhet Thunders in this year’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

Speaking about his side’s poor outing in the BPL, Gibbs cited that language barrier that has caused a lot of problems throughout the competition.

“About local players, a lot of them don’t understand English. So, it is difficult for me to make points all the time. It is frustrating,” said Gibbs yesterday in Sylhet. “I think the understanding of the game needs to be improved. And another thing is, they are very temperamental. I mean, it’s difficult for me to explain to them because they don’t understand it properly,” Gibbs said.
