Former South African cricketer Daryll Cullinan had made some brutal comments on the fitness of Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, and had called him “overweight” and unfit for the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Cullinan called Rohit a “flat track bully”, labelling him as a liability for the team. Now, Cullinan’s teammate Herschelle Gibbs has reacted to Cullinan’s comments on Indian skipper.

Gibbs is Rohit’s former Indian Premier League (IPL) teammate, and has backed Cullinan’s comments saying that everything is clearly visible on TV and that he does not need to mention any names.

I don’t need to mention any names. You can see everything on TV. Those guys that are unfit and carrying a little bit extra, I mean, the whole world is there to see. I think it’s up to the individual. I was only a batter. Rohit doesn’t bowl. It’s up to the individual for me with regards to how much they want to contribute, not only in their own specific skill. If you’re a bowler or a batter, your duty is still to be fit and to try and make a contribution in the field,” Gibbs told InsideSport.

Gibbs also said that the players carry a little bit extra and suggested that the mindset for some of the specific tournaments comes out with how much the players want to contribute to the team.

Those guys that are unfit and carrying a little bit extra, I mean, the whole world is there to see. I don’t need to mention any names. The mindset should be, especially with a lot of T20 cricket and obviously with the Champions Trophy coming up, how much you want to contribute and make a difference for your team,” he added.

With the series currently levelled at 1-1, Indian team is preparing for the fourth Test against Australia, set to take place in Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) from December 26.

A lot of questions have been raised at Indian captain Rohit Sharma after he showed a lacking performance in Test cricket. India’s worries in the present Border-Gavaskar Trophy have been made worse by the poor performance on the captain.

In the absence of Rohit Sharma for the Test in Perth, Jasprit Bumrah had taken the lead of the team, and led them to a spectacular 295-run win. Despite taking the charge in Adelaide, Rohit Sharma was unable to guide the team to victory and had to face a loss of 10 wickets.

Rohit has been on the receiving side of criticism since the loss in Adelaide, and fans are even talking about Bumrah taking over the captaincy. Daryll Cullinan, a former South African player went guns-blazing towards Rohit Sharma for his dismal batting performance.

Look at Rohit, then at Virat. Notice the difference in their physical condition. Rohit is overweight, and not a long-term cricketer anymore. Rohit is not in a good physical condition to play in a four or a five-match Test series,” Daryll Cullinan told InsideSport.

The team has reached Brisbane on December 11 and were seen working hard in their first net session. All of the players are working hard to overcome the reasons that have led to their below-par batting performance in the first two matches.

New Delhi: Former South African cricketing great Daryll Cullinan and India’s Sanjay Manjrekar lambasted Virat Kohli for his on-field behaviour on Thursday, wherein the Test captain walked up to the stumps mic and insinuated that the South African broadcasters had not given a fair DRS review, because of which Dean Elgar’s LBW decision got overturned.

Kohli and a few other Indian players fumed at South African broadcaster, SuperSport, after Elgar got an LBW reprieve following the DRS review. The India captain walked up to the stump mic and said, “Focus on your team while they shine the ball. Not just the opposition. Trying to catch people all the time.”

On-field umpire Marius Erasmus had earlier given Elgar out but the ball-tracking technology showed that the ball had missed the stumps, and the decision was overturned on review.

The 54-year-old Cullinan, who played 70 Tests and almost double the number of ODIs, said on espncricinfo’s Match Day that such behaviour from Kohli was “unacceptable on a cricket field” but he being Virat Kohli, he “has got away with such behaviour”.

“I love Virat Kohli, I love his cricket, I love the way he plays. But there has to be a line drawn somewhere to say ‘hang on, you must be severely punished’. If anything, it was a mistake. I just cannot believe that they could think along those sorts of lines. For too long, Virat has got away with behaviour which is unacceptable on a cricket field. But he’s Kohli and I don’t like it, quite frankly,” said Cullinan.

“This is the typical Virat’s untouchable; he behaves the way he wants to behave. The rest of the cricket world just bows down to Virat. The powerhouse is India. I hate to say this but it’s been going on for years. It’s just the big suck up towards India and anybody who plays for India. They are untouchable, so everyone will laugh it off,” he told espncricinfo.

Former India cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar said, “What followed after (Elgar getting a DRS reprieve) that was pretty serious for me because there was an insinuation from the Indian camp that the host broadcasters were up to some mischief to make sure they were putting their home team at an advantage. That is a very serious kind of insinuation. I have a problem with that.”

Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir too expressed his displeasure over Kohli’s rant in front of the stump mic after Elgar survived a DRS review on the third day of the deciding Test at Newlands, Cape Town on Thursday.

Gambhir termed Kohli’s reaction exaggerated and immature. The former player said that such reaction sets a bad example for budding cricketers.

“Kohli is very immature. It’s worst for an Indian captain to say like this in stumps. By doing this you will never be an idol to youngsters,” Gambhir told Star Sports.

“This is really bad. What Kohli did, going near the stump mic and reacting in that manner, that is really immature. This is not what you expect from an international captain, from an Indian captain. Then technology isn’t in your hand,” said Gambhir.

Let us begin this piece with Michael Atherton, the only man to be dismissed by three separate men over 15 times in Test cricket (no one else has got out to even two). The statistic is not as surprising as it sounds: England were going through a record low in the 1990s, prompting everyone to go after them. And as is often the norm with aggressive bowling attacks, they go after the captains, especially when they bat at the top. They all came at him, in pairs or all by themselves; and poor Atherton, perennial target of fast bowlers, opposition media, local media, and at times teammates, often fell prey.

So Glenn McGrath got Atherton 19 times in 17 Tests; Curtly Ambrose, 17 times in 26 Tests; and Courtney Walsh, 17 times in 27. Allan Donald also got him 11 times in 17 Tests, but it was a more or less fair contest: several of Atherton’s most iconic innings came against Donald.

Unfortunately, though Atherton had 108 First-Class wickets — about one every 3 matches — his leg-breaks were rarely used in Test cricket. He did take 2 Test wickets (decent ones, too, of Dilip Vengsarkar and Wasim Akram), but he could not get back at McGrath, Ambrose, or Walsh, those three nemesis of his.

While Atherton never got his revenge, some others did. Let us have a look.

1. Hugh Trumble caught Willie Quaife bowled Tom Hayward, 1901-02

Make no mistake: Hayward was a giant of First-Class cricket. At the time of his retirement only WG Grace (54,211) had more runs than his 43,551. Unfortunately, he was plagued by Hugh Trumble’s off-breaks from the day they met each other.

Trumble got Hayward in 3 consecutive innings in 1896; thrice in 5 innings (including a run out) in 1898-99; and 4 times in 5 innings (the fifth was a run out) in 1901-02.

So, when they met in the last Test of the series, Hayward was almost certainly desperate to give it back to Trumble. After all, he would finish with 481 First-Class wickets with his medium-paced off-spin.

Trumble, leading Australia in the match, walked out at 98 for 4. At that stage Hayward, bowling from the Railway End of MCG, was finding his groove. He soon had Trumble off a ball pitched on a good length; Trumble, mishit, was unable to keep it down, and was caught by Quaife.

Trumble, perhaps enraged by this unexpected switch of fortune, claimed 8 wickets in the Test. Sure enough, he got Hayward in the second innings. Still not happy, he got Hayward 4 times in the next 8 innings…

2. Alec Bedser bowled Arthur Morris, 1953

The Old Trafford Test of 1938 was washed out without a ball being bowled. Rain intervened again in 1948, saving England for the only time in the series. It was no different in 1953 when incessant rain had almost pushed the Test to the brink of a draw. England had reached 126 for 4 in response to Australia’s 318.

Reg Simpson and Trevor Bailey dug in before Godfrey Evans hit some swashbuckling strokes. No. 11 Bedser hung around too, helping Evans add 28 for the last wicket. Then Morris came on to bowl Chinaman, and his first 5 balls went for 5.

Now Morris and Bedser already had a history. Morris had started his Test career by getting out to Bedser in 5 of his first 6 dismissals (including 4 in a row). In 1950-51 Bedser got him 5 times in 8 innings (including 3 in 3). And even in this series he would get out to Bedser thrice in 5 innings (Bedser would get him 5 times, once in every Test). Bedser would eventually claim Morris 18 times (in 21 Tests). Only McGrath has got Atherton as many times.

Morris had his revenge by clean bowling Bedser, much to the delight of the English crowd. Captain Lindsay Hassett allowed Morris to lead the side as the Australians left field.

3. Kapil Dev caught Graham Dilley bowled David Gower, 1981-82

Gower, still new to Test cricket, had welcomed the Indians in 1979 with a delightful unbeaten 200 at Edgbaston. The joy was short-lived: Kapil got him for two consecutive ducks later that series. When England came over the next two winters, Kapil got him in twice in 3 innings, on either side of a run out. In other words, Kapil got Gower 4 times in 5 innings he fell to a bowler.

When the sides met in the last Test at Kanpur with India 1-0 up, England, for some reason, batted well into the third day before declaring on 378 for 9. Gower was trapped leg-before by — no prize for guessing — Kapil.

Kapil walked out at 207 for 7 on Day Five and launched a furious onslaught, reaching his hundred in a mere 83 balls. He eventually fell for a 98-ball 116 (76 of which came in boundaries) when trying to loft Gower: Dilley took the catch.

Sure enough, Kapil got Gower in the next Test they played together.

4. Malcolm Marshall caught Mike Gatting bowled Graham Gooch, 1986

While Gooch was as amazing as anyone against West Indies at their prime (nobody averaged more than his 44.83), he had a habit of falling to Marshall every now and then. In fact, Marshall snared Gooch 16 times in 21 Tests.

[read-also]19776[/read-also]

His medium-paced bowling had accounted for Marshall in when West Indies came over in 1980.

Marshall got Gooch thrice in 3 innings across formats, in 1986. Gooch responded with 129 not out, but Marshall got him again. And he got him twice more as the tour went on, making it 6 times in 11 innings.

That tour also witnessed Marshall smashing Gatting’s face with a vicious bouncer. The impact was so brutal that a piece of Gatting’s bone was found in the ball.

England’s woes continued as Marshall whacked them around while batting (as did Roger Harper and Michael Holding). He raced to 76 before holing out to Gatting off Gooch. West Indies completed their whitewash (Viv Richards registered what was then the fastest Test hundred) all the same, but two men did have their revenge.

[read-also]23192[/read-also]

5. Shane Warne LBW Daryll Cullinan, 1997-98

Contrary to popular belief, Warne has not got Cullinan out as frequently. While 4 times in 7 Tests is decent, Muttiah Muralitharan (7 times in 10 Tests) has a better success rate against Cullinan. Even Dinanath Ramnarine, the West Indian leg-spinner, had dismissed Cullinan 5 times in 5 Tests (more specifically, in 6 innings).

True, Warne got him 12 times across formats (the most by anyone), but hey, even if one excludes Ramnarine as an exception, Nixon MacLean got Cullinan 6 times in 12 matches. In fact, if Warne had a bunny, it was probably Ashwell Prince, who fell to the legend 11 times in 9 Tests.

It was more psychological, then; we all know of Cullinan’s visits to a sports psychologist after he was tormented by Warne, especially that flipper. The usual sledges were there, from “it’s going to be third ball” to “make sure you come forward” to “is the shower already running?” to “what colour was the couch?” and beyond.

But Cullinan’s moment came in the Carlton & United Series 1996-97 match at Sydney. Australia lost the match comprehensively, but not before Hansie Cronje tossed the ball to Cullinan on a turning track; and Cullinan soon had Adam Gilchrist caught and bowled.

But something sweeter was in store: Warne came out, swinging his bat like a mace the way he always had before he missed one off Cullinan and was given leg-before. For once Wisden came out of its usual guise of understatements: “Cullinan danced into the arms of his team-mates after removing his nemesis, Warne, with his district-standard off-breaks.”

Spin wizard Shane Warne‘s interesting lists do make a good read. During the second Test between England and Pakistan at Old Trafford, Warne through a Facebook Live video spoke about the best players he bowled to from each country. It did not end there; he went on to speak about the batsmen he enjoyed bowling the most to. Also Read: Best batsmen Shane Warne bowled to from each country

Here is the country wise list of cricketers Warne enjoyed bowling the most:

England: Usually left-handers are successful against leg-spinners but former England skipper Andrew Strauss had little luck against Warne. The leggie called Strauss a very good player, but recalled having some of the best balls of his career to him. We all remember the ball that bamboozled Strauss at Edgbaston in 2005 and cleaned-up him.

South Africa: No prizes for guessing this really. Warne had made Daryll Cullinan his bunny. Warne says that Cullinan seemed completely lost while playing him and did not have any idea on which way the ball was going. The duo shared interesting rivalries, obviously with Warne triumphing. Also Read: Daryll Cullinan’s verbal retort to Shane Warne

India: Warne candidly admits that India batsmen have smacked him all around the park but named his “very good friend” Rahul Dravid as someone he enjoyed bowling to. Though the spin-king admits that it was tough bowling to Dravid but somehow he managed to get better of the Indian batting legend many a times.

Pakistan: Inzamam-ul-Haq undoubtedly is amongst the modern greats but Warne enjoyed success against him. Warne believes that Inzi could be very lazy at times and the Aussie took an advantage of the same.

New Zealand: Warne admits he loved bowling to Craig McMillan for those “weird stances and silly” stuff that he did on the batting crease.

Sri Lanka: Tillakaratne Dilshan was a middle-order batsman when Warne played against him. Warne mentions that he enjoyed the contests with Dilshan as the Lankan looked to sweep him most of the time. Warne recalls that no matter what the situation, Dilshan kept his smile intact.

West Indies: Without a doubt, Warne reckons Brian Lara as the best left-hander he bowled to. However, among all the West Indian cricketers he says he enjoyed his contests against Shivnariane Chanderpaul the most.

Zimbabwe: Warne named Murray Goodwin, who he termed as a “funny little determined guy.” Goodwin has played a lot of domestic cricket in Australia as well.

Bangladesh: He called Mohammad Ashraful as the best Bangladeshi batsman he bowled to, and he enjoyed bowling the most to Habibul Bashar.

Daryll John Cullinan, born March 4, 1967, is a former South African batsman who was a vital member of the side throughout the 1990s. Cullinan is the eighth-highest run-scorer for South Africa in Test cricket. On his birthday, Shiamak Unwalla looks at 8 interesting things to know about the man who held the middle order together after South Africa’s reintroduction post their apartheid ban.

1. Impressive stats

Cullinan sits at No. 8 on the list of South African run-scrorers in Tests, and narrowly misses out on the top 10 in terms of South Africa’s Test batting average (with a 1,000-run cut-off). He is also joint fifth on the list of South Africa’s Test centurions.

2. Domestic traveller

Cullinan has played First-Class cricket for as many as eight teams: Border, Western Province, Transvaal, Gauteng, Easterns, Titans, Derbyshire and Kent.

3. A six in fried calamari

In a First-Class match in February 1995, Cullinan — playing for Border against Boland — hit pace bowler Roger Telemachus for a six that sailed over the ropes and into the pan of a spectator cooking fried calamari. The match had to be halted while the ball was retrieved and cooled, but it was eventually replaced for being too greasy. It remains one of the few occasions when sea food has interrupted play.

4. Record-breaking triple century

Cullinan was hailed from an early age as a potential mainstay in South Africa’s batting line-up. In fact in his early days he was even compared to the great Graeme Pollock. While he was quite successful, Cullinan never quite delivered on that early comparison. However, Cullinan gave a perfect display of his talent when he scored a nigh chanceless 337 for Transvaal against Northern Transvaal in 1993. It was then the highest First-Class score by a South African. The record is currently held by Stephen Cook, who made 390 for Lions against Warriors in 2009. Cullinan also once held the record for highest Test score by a South African when he scored 275 not out against New Zealand. His record was broken when Graeme Smith scored 277. The current record-holder is Hashim Amla, with 311 not out.

5. Tormented by Shane Warne

As good a batsman as Cullinan was, he had his problems against Australia, Pakistan, and Zimbabwe. He averaged less than 20 against those three teams. His average in those three countries fell to less than 10. A major reason for his failure against Australia was the presence of Shane Warne. Cullinan never seemed to be able to survive Warne, and the champion leg-spinner went out of his way to sledge and intimidate the batsman. Warne once said, “I didn’t care how many I got, so long as I got Cullinan.”

It eventually got so bad for Cullinan that he sought help from a sports psychologist. Warne responded to this by asking Cullinan the colour of the psychologist’s couch the next time they faced off. After retiring Cullinan said of Warne, “Quite simply, Warne was too good for me. In hindsight, the focus on me was a compliment. I, however, only caught on towards the end that I did not do the simplest of things well – and that is watch the ball out the hand. But by then it was too late.”

6. Part-time Wicket-taker

Cullinan rarely bowled in international cricket, but he managed to take two Test wickets with his part-time off-spin, getting rid of Nuwan Zoysa and Mervyn Dillon. He had more success in ODIs, picking up five wickets: Alistair Campbell, Mark Ealham, Matthew Fleming, Adam Gilchrist, and in what must have been his most satisfying moment, Shane Warne.

7. ICL coach

Cullinan coached Indian Cricket League (ICL) team Kolkata Tigers.

8. Honours

Cullinan was named South African Cricket Annual Cricketer of the Year three times, in 1989, 1996, and 1999. He was also named Indian Cricket Cricketer of the Year in 1997.

Former South African batsman Daryll Cullinan has called master batsman AB de Villiers as freakish. He also said he is a kind of batsman who does not likes to struggle on a bad batting wicket. According to Cullinan, de Villiers is an excellent batsman but is not a good bad-wicket player. He prefers playing on good batting pitches. Cullinan added in Test cricket there are many batsmen who are very good at playing on wickets which are not conducive to batting but de Villiers is a type of batsman who is not very happy when he is not able to score runs or is struggling on such tracks. LIVE CRICKET SCORECARD: South Africa vs England , 5th ODI match, South Africa vs England, 2015-16

In a conversation with Cricbuzz he said, “AB de Villiers is a freakish player. I was the first batsman in the world who gave up 50-overs cricket, purposely, to play Test cricket. I struggled because in One-Day cricket you’re playing balls that you leave alone in Test cricket. You’re attacking different lengths. In one-Day cricket, you’re quickly getting to this side of the ball, that side of the ball and the difficult thing is that when they get to T20, you play this way and that way and then you get to four or five day cricket, which is also a different mindset. The challenges are great.”   READ: AB de Villiers says he is committed to South African national team as he signs up Barbados Tridents in CPL

Cullinan also said that India is lucky to have Rahul Dravid as their Under-19 coach, “This is where we need to make a call. It requires a very strict eye from coaches and India are very fortunate they have Rahul (Dravid). We spoke after the Irish game and we shared very briefly, these same thoughts. It was really nice to hear a guy like that emphasize the belief that I have.”

Talking of Kagiso Rabada, Cullinan said, “Yes, he’s hugely exciting. I think, at the moment, in South Africa there’s so much talk about transformation, and getting black cricketers through. He couldn’t have come at a better time. But again, he’s 20, he has got to fill out. He’s a man in a young man’s body. If he stays fit… and he can bat, I honestly think he can bat. I mentioned it in South Africa that even he knows that he is taken seriously because that sort of a guy could bat at no. 7 in Test cricket.”

Johannesburg: Former South African batsman Daryll Cullinan has expressed his disappointment over Hashim Amla‘s remarks regarding the struggle that players of colour go through to cement their place in the national squad. Amla’s comments came after Temba Bavuma became the first black batsman to score a hundred for South Africa. Amla had said that he had a similar career to Bavuma and everyone had doubted his capability during the debut, because of the colour of the skin. Describing Amla’s opinion as `blinkered`, Cullinan said that the latter was doubted for his techniques and not because of the colour of his skin. ALSO READ: Hashim Amla: Temba Bavuma and other ‘coloured’ cricketers doubted in South Africa

Cullinan believes that to link this doubt to the colour of one’s skin, was disappointing, especially when it came from a man of Amla’s integrity and respect, Sport24 reported. The 48-year-old further lashed out at Amla and insisted that even Bavuma talked about the challenges of Test cricket and being an inspiration to all young black cricketers. Bavuma, who is by far the shortest batsman in the line-up, standing 162cm tall, used mere 141 balls laced with 16 boundaries to reach the three-figure mark on the fourth day of the second Test against England. RELATED: Hope my knock inspires many young black Africans, Temba Bavuma

“Hashim Amla’s opinion sadly disappointing and blinkered. How many have ever played international cricket and at some stage or the other their ability doubted? Don Bradman was dropped after his first test. Jacques Kallis first 7 or 8 test matches had many wondering. Amla was no different. Doubts were about his technique nothing else. He deserved his selection and to suggest he doubted that because of the colour of his skin was his perception,” an evidently miffed Cullinan said.

“Bavuma spoke of the challenges of test cricket and being an inspiration for all young black cricketers. He could so easily have uttered Amla’s words and gone down that road, wisely he did not. Amla’s opinion will polarise opinion, starting here,” Cullinan said in praise of the first South African black centurion.

Johannesburg: Former South African batsman Daryll Cullinan has urged his country’s players to show maturity by embracing criticism and called on his former side to work upon them. Cullinan’s comments came after the second Test match between England and South Africa ended in a draw in Newlands. Reflecting his views, Cullinan, who appeared in 70 Tests and 138 ODIs for South Africa, wrote on his Facebook page, “There is nothing wrong with criticism as long as it is backed up by facts and has credibility behind it. One of the things that our cricket lacks is the maturity to embrace it, work with it and evaluate its value.” FULL SCORECARD: South Africa vs England, 2nd Test at Cape Town

The 48-year-old believes that accepting criticism positively could only be expected from the people, who are secure enough in their opinion and credibility, Sport24 reported. England have taken a 1-0 lead in the four-match series following their massive 241-run win in the opening match against the hosts. The two sides will now lock horns in the third match in Johannesburg, starting from January 14. South Africa announce squads for remaining Tests, ODIs vs England

South Africa announced an unchanged squad for the remaining two Tests of the ongoing four-match series against England, with AB de Villiers taking over the captaincy following Hashim Amla’s resignation from the position after the second Test. South Africa also announced their squad for the five-match One-Day International (ODI) series that is to follow the Tests. Rilee Rossouw returns to the limited-overs squad following an injury that kept him out of the India tour, with left-arm spinner Aaron Phangiso being dropped.

Calamari stopping a First-Class cricket match is not the commonest of incidents, but Paarl Cricket Ground witnessed exactly the same on February 6, 1995 in a Castle Cup match. Abhishek Mukherjee looks back at a greasy seafood interruption.

Dogs have stopped competitive cricket matches on several occasions. Peter the Cat (and his successor Sinbad) has attained legendary status in the annals of cricket. There have been other creatures interrupting matches, but it seems almost fantastic that calamari have been at it as well — that, too, fried ones. The incident happened in a Castle Cup match at Paarl, where Boland were hosting Border. There was nothing extraordinary about the match. Guided by the curiously named Mugammad Salieg Nackerdien, Boland had reached 188 for 4 before there was a collapse, and they capitulated to a mere 228 on the second morning.

It seemed a competent score, though Michael Stonier and Frans Cronje (elder brother of Hansie) added 65 for the opening stand. Border were reduced to 143 for 6 before Steve Palframan and Ian Howell added 57. Border lost their last 4 wickets for 18, and Boland led by 10.

Unfortunately for Boland, the third afternoon belonged entirely to the Border bowlers — Brenden Fourie (3 for 20), Howell (2 for 31), and Peter Emslie (4 for 37). Once again Boland had a decent start, but lost their last 8 wickets for 37 and were bowled out for 110.

Border needed a mere 121, and though Stonier fell for 1, Cronje and Daryll Cullinan took the score to 61 for 1 at stumps. The fourth morning promised a quick, eventless end.

A greasy affair

The Boland attack had some dignified names. Claude Henderson later played Tests and ODIs for South Africa, while Roger Telemachus played ODIs and T20Is. Another interesting part of the attack was a fast-medium bowler called Marais Erasmus, currently an international umpire.

With Cullinan at the crease, the match should ideally have not lasted a session. Exactly why the fans were frying calamari outside the boundary remains unknown, for carrying raw materials and equipment to the ground for a two-hour session does not seem an easy option.

Whatever the reason, the Paarl crowd was happy to witness the home side lose with their stomachs full of calamari. Unfortunately, Cullinan hit Telemachus for six, and the ball landed in a pan of fried calamari.

History is not exactly vocal on exactly what happened to the calamari, or what the “cook” had for a meal. Gripping a hot, greasy ball was beyond Telemachus’ scope. They allowed the ball to cool for ten minutes before umpires Alan Ball and Wilf Diedricks (was it the first time they had to check the temperature of the ball?) gave the green signal.

Unfortunately, the grease meant that Telemachus still found it difficult to grip the ball, and it had to be replaced after some deliberation. “Fried calamari stopped play” ran headline of the Wisden match report.

It did not take Cullinan much longer after that to finish things off. He outscored Cronje, leaving him stranded on 36 as he raced to 78. The calamari-stained shot remained the only six of the Border second innings.

What followed?

Border finished joint fifth on the points table along with Western Province. Boland came last.

Brief scores:

Boland 228 (Salieg Nackerdien 77; Brenden Fourie 3 for 55) and 110 (Brenden Fourie 3 for 20, Peter Emslie 4 for 37) lost to Border 218 (Steve Palframan 53; Bollie Williams 3 for 45, Billy Stelling 4 for 12) and 121 for 1 (Daryll Cullinan 78*) by 9 wickets.
