The global governing body of the sport has decided to go with a Hybrid model for the 2025 edition of the Champions Trophy, with India going to play their matches at a neutral venue in Dubai.

“It’s unfortunate that things have worked out that way for sure. But there’s no doubt that what everyone loves seeing — the India-Pakistan games. Whenever they come together, whether it’s an ICC event, it is a really special time because we’ve got a sense of what’s on the line,” Watson told the media.

“It’s unfortunate that India aren’t travelling to Pakistan for this Champions Trophy. But, unfortunately, that’s just the way it is right now,” he added.

The Champions Trophy 2025 is going to begin in February and India’s matches will be played in Dubai. If India manages to qualify for semi-final and final, both the matches will be also held in Dubai, otherwise, the matches will be held in Pakistan itself.

India vs Bangladesh: February 20 in Dubai
India vs Pakistan: February 23 in Dubai
India vs New Zealand: March 2 in Dubai
Semi-final (if qualified): March 4 in Dubai

During the first week of January 2025, the squads will go through a spontaneous training camp in order to prepare for the tournament. This tournament is going to witness seven matches with a final. The Champions Trophy is going to take place next year in February or March. Pakistan had requested a dal for itself until 2031, as they even took back the boycott threat and accepted the decision of hybrid model in the previous ICC meeting last week.

After initially declining the idea of a hybrid model, PCB later stated that Pakistan will adopt it under specific restrictions. Using a hybrid mode to hold all the ICC events in India was one of the requirements.

The Champions Trophy is going to be held in Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi. Spontaneous ground renovations are going underway in the venues. If the event is executed in a hybrid model at last, India’s matches will most likely be held in Dubai.

There was a few minute discussion held today though, where the ICC told the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to accept the hybrid model, as it is the only option left for them.

The ICC had scheduled an important meeting on December 5 to address the ongoing issues related to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The meeting was scheduled to begin 3:30 PM UAE time (5 PM IST), where newly appointed chairman Jay Shah presiding the discussions. But with a massive change of events, the ICC decided to postpone it.

Along with that, the PCB was clearly informed that the hybrid model is the only way to commence the upcoming tournament, and advised them to accept it with no additional conditions.

The ICC was initially planning to resolve the issue around the Champions Trophy 2025 by negotiating in this meeting, but the decision has only been pushed away with no official announcement to follow. The previous meeting was called off when the PCB denied to accept the proposal of the hybrid model.

After the previous ICC meetings, PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi has proposed an agreement with the BCCI and the ICC. They proposed that Pakistan would not play any matches in India for the next three years, which also includes the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Meanwhile, the ICC is yet to announce any official statement on Champions Trophy 2025, which is just 77 days away, and the governing body has still not released any schedule of the tournament even though a schedule is given 100 days before an event.

The fate of the tournament, however, is hanging in the balance as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made it clear that India will not be travelling across the border due to security concerns.

Speaking to PTI, Harbhajan Singh said, “Ask all players, they would say they are ready to play in Abu Dhabi or Dubai. In any case, we don’t see too many Indo-Pak games as such, and Pakistan should keep their ego aside and agree to the hybrid model.”

“There is a security concern (for India) and I have been saying this since 2022,” he added.

If the hybrid model is accepted for the Champions Trophy, then India will be playing their matches in Dubai. After the BCCI denied the invitation to come and play the tournament, the PCB requested the ICC for the reason behind India not coming to Pakistan.

As per IANS, Champions Trophy might not be played in Pakistan, and instead of the tournament taking place in a ‘Hybrid Model’, the entire event might end up getting moved out to a whole another country due to the political distress in Pakistan at the moment.

However former Pakistan captain has questioned the decision of this trophy tour as the decision for the venue of the tournament remains uncertain.

“What is the purpose of this trophy tour when no one really knows at which venues the tournament will be held and whether Pakistan and India will play against each other in the event?,” he said as quoted by Sportskeeda.

The spokesperson of the Foreign Office, Mumtaz Baloch was asked questions at press regarding the status of cricket tournament set to be held in Pakistan next year.
