Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana Joty was seen tearing up after the team secured their victory in the opening match of the Women’s T20 World Cup. Bangladesh won by 16 runs. This was the first win for Bangladesh in the marquee event.

The Bangladesh team set a decent target of 119/7 in their 20 overs of play. However, their bowling department kept Scotland on their toes and restricted them to 103/7.

As she celebrated her 100th T20I match, Joty shared how the team was exited and highlighted the importance of this win for both the team and Bangladeshi women’s cricket. She revealed that this win was a massive one as Bangladesh was initially planning to host the tournament but political distress led to the event being shifted to the UAE.

A win after 10 years is very emotional. We’ve been waiting for this for a long time,” said Joty. “No matter how well we play, if we don’t win, it feels meaningless. This victory gives us momentum, and I feel it’s a step towards something bigger.

“We’ve moved on from the heartbreak of not playing in front of our home crowd. We’re fortunate to be here, healthy, and representing our country.”

CRITICISED for her recent outbursts inside and outside the field, India captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been suspended for her next two international matches following two separate breaches of the ICC Code of Conduct during the third match of their ICC Women’s Championship series against Bangladesh in Dhaka on Saturday.

Harmanpreet will miss India’s next two matches in the Asian Games as per this punishment.

Harmanpreet was fined 50 per cent of her match fee and three demerit points were added to her disciplinary record for a Level 2 offence after she was found guilty of breaching article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision”.

Harmanpreet was also fined 25 per cent of her match fee for a Level 1 offence after she was found guilty of breaching article 2.7, which relates to “public criticism about an incident occurring in an international match.”

Nigar Sultana Reacts To Harmanpreet Kaur’s Outburst

The first incident occurred in the 34th over of India’s innings when Kaur hit the wickets with her bat in a show of dissent after she was adjudged caught at slip off spinner Nahida Akter. She was clearly unhappy with the decision as she felt the ball had come off her pad and expressed her frustration by smashing the stumps with her bat.

The other incident was during the presentation ceremony when Kaur criticized the umpiring in the match. Harmanpreet heavily criticised the umpires and termed their decision disappointing.

The Bangladesh team didn’t even get a picture clicked while sharing the trophy due to Harmanpreet Kaur’s behaviour. BAN skipper Nigar Sultana recently reacted to the controversial outburst.

“You are right in saying such things happen in sports, and it is not the first time. You are also right in saying that it happened in the heat of the moment. However, had it been restricted to the field of play, honestly speaking, I would not have felt bad about it or felt disappointed. I would have told my players that it was all in the intensity of the moment, and it is better that all of us moved on from it,” Nigar Sultana was quoted as saying by Revsportz.

“But what really disappointed me was that it was not restricted to the field of play. Let me tell you something. For my players too, Harmanpreet is a legend of the game. They too look up to her. And when they came and said to me that how can a legend of her stature do this to us, I felt sad and disappointed. That’s what has pained me the most,” she added.

“The very same umpires officiated in the T20 series, which India won. In fact, that too was a very close series and I feel we should have done better in the second game and won it, but we did not. But that is not the point here. The moot point is the very same umpires officiated in the T20 series as well.”

“There was not a single complaint from India. Is it because they had won the series? As players, you are always taught that the umpires’ decision is final and that we have to respect that. Let me also ask you this – had they won the final ODI, would they have raised the issue of umpiring or was it raised because they did not win the series, and they were disappointed and frustrated with the result?” concluded Sultana.

INDIAN captain Harmanpreet Kaur could be banned from the first two matches of the Asian Games in Hangzhou on charges of damaging the equipment and public outrage against the umpires.

Harmanpreet Kaur lost cool when she was given out LBW in the tied 3rd ODI against Bangladesh women. The furious Harman then hit the stumps with bat on her way back to the dressing room.

Harmanpreet Kaur launched an attack on the umpires during the post-match presentation and alleged that the umpires were biased toward the home team. Harmanpreet said that the next time India will tour Bangladesh, they will prepare for the poor umpiring too.

The skipper did not stop here and insulted Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana during the trophy-sharing photoshoot. Harmanpreet asked Nigar to call the umpires and join the Bangladesh team on stage, suggesting that they played for the host team. Nigar was furious with Harmanpreet Kaur’s act and walked off the stage.

Harmanpreet Kaur Like To Face Two Match Ban

As per PTI, Harmanpreet Kaur is likely to get 4 demerit points for her outrage which will force her to miss the first two matches of the Asian Games.

“There is still some deliberation going on whether she should get three demerit points or four as there are two charges — match equipment abuse and criticism of match officials.

“In case there are four demerit points in a space of 24 months, you either miss a Test or two limited-over games — in this case, first two games of Asiad. In case, it is three, then she will only cop financial penalty,” a senior BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Nigar Sultana’s Reply To Harmanpreet Kaur

The Bangladesh captain was also furious with the behaviour of her Indian counterpart and said that Harmanpreet Kaur should have shown some manners.

“It is totally her (Harmanpreet’s) problem. I have nothing to do with it,” Nigar said in the press conference. “As a player, she could have shown better manners. I can’t tell you what happened, but it didn’t feel right to be there [for the photograph] with my team. It wasn’t the right environment. That’s why we went back. Cricket is a game of discipline and respect.”

The Bangladesh captain was upset with Harmanpreet Kaur’s behaviour and walked off with her team.

BANGLADESH pulled off a remarkable comeback as the ODI series decider against India Women ended as a tie. India were cruising to the target of 226, at 160-3, before Bangladesh women made a roaring return and bowled out India for 225.

India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur was furious over a few controversial decisions by the umpires during the match, including her LBW call. Harman was disgusted after being given out LBW and smashed the stumps with her bat in frustration.

Later in the post-match presentation, Harmanpreet Kaur didn’t mince words and slammed the umpires for their decisions. As per a report in ESPNcricinfo, Harman even wanted the umpires to join the Bangladesh team for photographs, implying that they were part of the home team.

“A lot of learning from this game, even apart from cricket. The type of umpiring that was happening there, we were very surprised. Next time, when we will come to Bangladesh, we will make sure we have to deal with such umpiring and accordingly, will prepare ourselves,” said Harmanpreet during the presentation.

Bangladesh Captain Nigar Sultana Hits Back At Harmanpreet Kaur

Meanwhile, Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana hit back at Harmanpreet Kaur for her behaviour and said that the India captain should have shown better manners.

The Bangladesh captain also backed the umpires and said that they are professional individuals and gave the decisions they felt were right. Sultana also took a swipe at Harman and said that she should not cry about poor calls as seven wickets to fall were either caught or run out.

“The umpires wouldn’t give her out if she wasn’t out. We had umpires from men’s international cricket, so they were good umpires. What are they [India] going to say about the caught or run-out dismissals [of which there were six excluding the Harmanpreet and Meghna wickets]? We have respected their decisions. The umpire’s decision is the final decision, whether I like it or not. Why didn’t we behave in that way [like the India players]?”

How Fair Was Harmanpreet Kaur’s Outrage At Umpires?

Cricket is a gentlemen’s game where the umpire’s decision is supreme. The umpires are humans and are bound to make errors. This is not something that is new to the game and the players are well aware of this. There have been instances in the past where batters have been given out unfairly, at times very close to a big landmark, and bowlers have been denied certain wickets.

To minimize the umpiring errors, DRS has been put in place but the technology too has its fair share of glitches. What Harmanpreet did was against the spirit of the game which is of utmost importance for the players and fans. Look at Kane Williamson, his team was denied a World Cup after a bizarre boundary count rule but he took the blow with a smile on his face. Harmanpreet should think about her behaviour in the final ODI as no player is bigger than the game itself and its integrity.

AFTER the ODI series decider between India and Bangladesh ended in a thrilling tie at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Saturday, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur came down heavily on umpiring in the match, calling it “pathetic” while adding that she was “really disappointed” with some decisions.

In India’s chase of 226, Harmanpreet went for a sweep off Nahida Akter in the 34th over. But the Indian skipper missed the delivery and the ball seemingly went to slip off the pads. On Nahida’s appeal, the umpire raised his finger, leaving Harmanpreet furious.

In anger, she hit the stumps with her bat and exchanged a few angry words with the umpire before walking towards the pavilion. On the way, she showed a thumbs up to the crowd when she reached the boundary ropes.

“They (Bangladesh) batted really well, batted according to the situation. They were taking those singles which were very crucial. In between we leaked a few runs but when we were batting, we controlled the game very well. But as I mentioned earlier, some pathetic umpiring was done and we are really disappointed about some decisions given by the umpires,” said Harmanpreet in the post-match show.

Nigar Sultana Slams Harmanpreet Kaur

As per an ESPN CricInfo report, Harmanpreet asked the umpires to join the Bangladesh team for the end-of-series photo, indicating that they were playing on behalf of the hosts. Offended at the comment, Nigar had a word with BCB officials and left the post-match show with the players.

Talking about the incident in the post-match show, Nigar hit back at the Indian skipper over her behaviour and told how her words made the Bangladesh team uncomfortable during the photo session which forced them to leave.

“It is totally her problem. I have nothing to do with it. As a player, she could have shown better manners. I can’t tell you what happened, but it didn’t feel right to be there [for the photograph] with my team. It wasn’t the right environment. That’s why we went back. Cricket is a game of discipline and respect,” she said.

Nigar also addressed the allegations around umpiring and said “The umpires wouldn’t give her out if she wasn’t out. We had umpires from men’s international cricket, so they were good umpires. What are they [India] going to say about the caught or run-out dismissals [of which there were six excluding the Harmanpreet and Meghna wickets]? We have respected their decisions. AHEAD of the women’s ODI series decider against India at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Saturday, Bangladesh are dealing with injury scares to captain Nigar Sultana and youngster Shorna Akter.

Shorna, who was handed her ODI debut in the series opener on July 16, which Bangladesh sensationally won by 40 runs, had to retire hurt even before getting a chance to bat due to stomach pain and did not play in the second ODI.

As per the report in Cricbuzz, Nigar became unwell due to heat in the second ODI which India won by 108 runs and vomited several times which forced her to change her batting position, and is now doubtful to play in the series decider.

“She (Shorna) is unfit at the moment. Yes, still Joty (Nigar Sultana) is not fully fit and we will have a fitness test tomorrow and we will take a call tomorrow morning,” head coach Hashan Tillakaratne was quoted as saying by the report.

In the second ODI, Jemimah Rodrigues starred with a superb all-round performance — a quick 86 with the bat and four wickets with the ball to help India level the three-game ODI series with a huge 108-run victory.

“They are confident. It’s just that the second game didn’t go as we expected. We had a few discussions after the last game. We have come up with some plans. Now players are very confident and we are hoping that they will come up with a good performance tomorrow,” added Tillakaratne.

Bangladesh suffered a huge batting meltdown in chasing 229 in the second game, losing their last seven wickets for 14 runs in a span of 38 balls. Tillakaratne admitted that Bangladesh’s lack of consistency with the bat and inability to play fewer dot balls is a point of concern.

“Yes, it’s (batting) is a big concern. The most difficult thing is to get in once you get a good start and you don’t throw your wicket away. So second game 103-3 after the 29th over we thought we are line with the required run rate but unfortunately losing Pinky at that time it cost us the game. The biggest concern is eating up lots of dot balls. We have had a few discussions. I am sure they will come up with some good performance tomorrow,” he concluded.

Wellington: Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana on Friday has rued the batting collapse which led to them losing their match to Australia in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup. On a windy and cold day at Basin Reserve, Bangladesh’s batting struggled to get going with number six batter Lata Mondal top-scoring with 33 and Sharmin Akhter (24) being the other batter in the side to get above 20 runs.

“I think you can see how we actually fought in a lot of matches. It was close against West Indies and how we started the tournament against South Africa it was so close for us. Maybe we could play better here, but our batting unit collapsed and while the bowlers have done very well, if the batters can support them maybe we could have won two or three more matches here. But still we have one match to go, so I’m looking forward to bouncing back as a batting and bowling unit,” said Sultana in the post-match virtual press conference.

Sultana was delighted for her team-mates Fargana Hoque and Rumana Ahmed achieving individual milestones in ODI cricket. Hoque became the first Bangladeshi woman to pass 1000 runs in ODIs with eight today in her 47th match while leg-spinner Ahmed achieved the feat of being the first women’s bowler from Bangladesh to take 50 ODI wickets.

“Obviously I am proud to have them in the team and they have played for Bangladesh for a long time and I guess we have a long way to go. I’m always proud of Fargana Hoque and how she has batted through, it was brilliant and how she actually performs for the team every time.”

“Rumana Ahmed is a brilliant all-rounder that we have in our team and I think we have more opportunities to get all these kinds of milestones. So, I’m hoping there will be 1000 more runs for Fargana Hoque and 50 more wickets for Rumana Ahmed.”

Despite the loss, Sultana was proud of how Bangladesh caused a huge scare to Australia as they reduced the six-time champions to 70/5 in 17.4 overs before Beth Mooney and Annabel Sutherland took them home.

“The bowlers have done wonderfully well today and how they bowled, it was wonderful. It was great to be able to give Australia some tough time in the middle. So we tried to extend the game as long as we can and Salma (Khatun) bowled brilliantly today.”

Wellington: Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana on Thursday acknowledged that her side have to fix their batting concerns ahead of their final league match against Australia in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup. In their first-ever ODI World Cup appearance, Bangladesh looked strong with the ball but it has been the batting which has been their Achilles heel.

“Our bowling unit is doing very well, so what we will do and what we need to work the most on is to fix our batting unit, it has become very important. It turns out that our bowlers tried to restrict the opponents to a decent score in all the last matches we played but somehow we couldn’t support them with our batting unit because the top order collapsed,” said Sultana in the pre-match virtual press conference.

Sultana disclosed that discussions around improved batting show have been happening amongst the players. “So, those scores were not achievable, or at least we could have gone even closer to those matches. Now we have discussed among ourselves how we can play or plan so that our batting unit can come back on track.”

“Now every one of us expects the batting to bounce back. Of course, Australia are the strongest team and so far they are in a very good position in the tournament. But still, I think that if we can do well in both units – we can fight them very well.”

Sultana admitted that Bangladesh haven’t been able to find time to adjust to windy conditions at Wellington due to rain. “The weather here is windy, and we came here yesterday. Yesterday we were able to go to the field in the afternoon but we couldn’t do much because it was raining outside. So far, our analysts are trying to give us as much information as they can. There was a match today and I still don’t know the result.”

“Seeing that, as much knowledge as we can get now from there and after going to the field tomorrow, maybe we’ll be able to understand more. We’ll try to do a little knocking on the wicket or bat and then we can understand a bit of the behaviour of the wicket and we can adjust to the conditions.”

Sultana signed off by saying that her team wants to take inspiration from the men’s team registering their first-ever series win over South Africa by 2-1 in Centurion.

“The Bangladesh team has done a great job. I congratulate them and there is always good wishes from our team. There are many in our team who regularly follow the game of the Bangladesh team. We watch regularly because we love cricket so much. So, a good result and we could get a positive vibe from there. We want to carry forward with those positive vibes.”
