CRITICISED for her recent outbursts inside and outside the field, India captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been suspended for her next two international matches following two separate breaches of the ICC Code of Conduct during the third match of their ICC Women’s Championship series against Bangladesh in Dhaka on Saturday.

Harmanpreet will miss India’s next two matches in the Asian Games as per this punishment.

Harmanpreet was fined 50 per cent of her match fee and three demerit points were added to her disciplinary record for a Level 2 offence after she was found guilty of breaching article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision”.

Harmanpreet was also fined 25 per cent of her match fee for a Level 1 offence after she was found guilty of breaching article 2.7, which relates to “public criticism about an incident occurring in an international match.”

Nigar Sultana Reacts To Harmanpreet Kaur’s Outburst

The first incident occurred in the 34th over of India’s innings when Kaur hit the wickets with her bat in a show of dissent after she was adjudged caught at slip off spinner Nahida Akter. She was clearly unhappy with the decision as she felt the ball had come off her pad and expressed her frustration by smashing the stumps with her bat.

The other incident was during the presentation ceremony when Kaur criticized the umpiring in the match. Harmanpreet heavily criticised the umpires and termed their decision disappointing.

The Bangladesh team didn’t even get a picture clicked while sharing the trophy due to Harmanpreet Kaur’s behaviour. BAN skipper Nigar Sultana recently reacted to the controversial outburst.

“You are right in saying such things happen in sports, and it is not the first time. You are also right in saying that it happened in the heat of the moment. However, had it been restricted to the field of play, honestly speaking, I would not have felt bad about it or felt disappointed. I would have told my players that it was all in the intensity of the moment, and it is better that all of us moved on from it,” Nigar Sultana was quoted as saying by Revsportz.

“But what really disappointed me was that it was not restricted to the field of play. Let me tell you something. For my players too, Harmanpreet is a legend of the game. They too look up to her. And when they came and said to me that how can a legend of her stature do this to us, I felt sad and disappointed. That’s what has pained me the most,” she added.

“The very same umpires officiated in the T20 series, which India won. In fact, that too was a very close series and I feel we should have done better in the second game and won it, but we did not. But that is not the point here. The moot point is the very same umpires officiated in the T20 series as well.”

“There was not a single complaint from India. Is it because they had won the series? As players, you are always taught that the umpires’ decision is final and that we have to respect that. Let me also ask you this – had they won the final ODI, would they have raised the issue of umpiring or was it raised because they did not win the series, and they were disappointed and frustrated with the result?” concluded Sultana.

INTERNATIONAL Cricket Council (ICC) have suspended the Indian women’s team’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur for two matches over the recent ruckus during the third ODI against Bangladesh at the Sher-E-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.

“India captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been suspended for her team’s next two international matches following two separate breaches of the ICC Code of Conduct during the third match of their ICC Women’s Championship series against Bangladesh in Dhaka on Saturday,” said ICC via their media release.

“Kaur was fined 50 per cent of her match fee and three demerit points were added to her disciplinary record for a Level 2 offence after she was found guilty of breaching article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision”.

“Kaur was also fined 25 per cent of her match fee for a Level 1 offence after she was found guilty of breaching article 2.7, which relates to “public criticism in relation to an incident occurring in an international match.”

“The first incident occurred in the 34th over of India’s innings when Kaur hit the wickets with her bat in a show of dissent after she was adjudged caught at slip off spinner Nahida Akter. The other incident was during the presentation ceremony when Kaur criticized the umpiring in the match.

“Kaur admitted the offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by Akhtar Ahmed of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees and, as such, there was no need for a formal hearing.

“On-field umpires Tanvir Ahmed and Muhammad Kamruzzaman, third umpire Moniruzzamman and fourth umpire Ali Arman leveled the charges.

“Level 2 breaches carry a penalty of between 50 and 100 per cent of a player’s match fee and three or four demerit points while Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

“Kaur’s four demerit points convert to two suspension points. As two suspension points equate to a ban from one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is, whatever comes first for the player or player support personnel, Kaur stands suspended from India’s forthcoming matches,” the release further added.

THE UGLY incident involving India captain Harmanpreet Kaur during the last match of the three-game One-Day International series with Bangladesh was nothing short of ridiculous, not just for the intensity of the tirade that cricketer enacted on the field, but for the sheer length of time that she went on with it.

With the series tied at 1-1, the last game was a must-win and as it turned out, this game too ended in a draw and the two sides shared the trophy. But that is only half the story. The real story was how the India skipper not only lost her temper but also took shots at the officials, organisers, and rivals in an unending harangue.

Harmanpreet evidently was not too pleased by the manned in which she was given out leg-before as India were at a critical stage during the run chase. So incensed was the India captain that she let loose a vocal volley and shattered the stumps with her bat while walking out.

One would have assumed this was the end of it, but no. The skipper wasn’t done.

She let loose during the post-match interview, claiming that the next time India visited Bangladesh, the team would also prepare for the umpiring as much as the opponents.

Was that the end? No!

The ritual photograph was supposed to be next but here too, Harmanpreet just would not put a lid on it. She loudly asked for the umpires too to be brought on for the photograph and had quite a bit to say to rival skipper Nigar Sultana.

Nigar walked off with her side and later said that the environment was not right for the photo session.

This is not the first time that India and Bangladesh have had issues during matches.

A near-fracas during an Under-19 match a few years ago was preceded by some rather unwelcome posters in Bangladesh when the Indian senior team had visited.

Even in Sri Lanka, during the ongoing ACC Emerging Nations Asia Cup, the Bangladesh team had a lot to say during their semi-final against India, and the Indians gave it back in kind during their win, with veteran Bangladeshi player Soumya Sarkar also being given a verbal, which had threatened to escalate.

But the important thing with all of these was that none of them carried on after the match, or the immediate flare-up.

One would have assumed that saner heads would calm Harmanpreet Kaur down after the match, but those seem to be surfeit in the dressing room.

She might have been the aggrieved party, but to carry on unendingly was neither needed nor pretty. Her penalty was light compared to her violation of all codes.

Cricket captains, like all athletes, are ambassadors of the country and they need to draw a line about how far they want to stretch a contentious issue. In this case, there was no line. That is unacceptable.

HARMANPREET Kaur’s outrage at the umpires after a tied India, Bangladesh ODI series final has earned her criticism from all corners. Harmanpreet was furious after she was given out LBW despite hinting that she had hit the ball. The Indian captain lost his cool on the field and shattered the stumps with her bat.

later, Harmanpreet Kaur went on a rage against the umpires in the post-match presentation and said that the next time team India will come to Bangladesh, they will prepare for the umpires as well. Harmanpreet did not stop here and made objectional remarks about the Bangladesh team.

During the trophy-sharing photoshoot, Harmanpreet asked Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana to call the umpires as well. “Why you are only here? You haven’t tied the match. The umpires did it for you. Call them up! We better have photo with them as well,” said Harmanpreet Kaur.

The Bangladesh captain was upset with Harmanpreet Kaur’s behaviour and walked off with her team.

Nigar Sultana Hits Back At Harmanpreet Kaur

Nigar Sultana was not happy with Harmanpreet Kaur’s behavior and said that the India captain should have shown better manners.

“It is totally her (Harmanpreet’s) problem. I have nothing to do with it,” Nigar said in the press conference. “As a player, she could have shown better manners. I can’t tell you what happened, but it didn’t feel right to be there [for the photograph] with my team. It wasn’t the right environment. That’s why we went back. Cricket is a game of discipline and respect.”

BANGLADESH pulled off a remarkable comeback as the ODI series decider against India Women ended as a tie. India were cruising to the target of 226, at 160-3, before Bangladesh women made a roaring return and bowled out India for 225.

India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur was furious over a few controversial decisions by the umpires during the match, including her LBW call. Harman was disgusted after being given out LBW and smashed the stumps with her bat in frustration.

Later in the post-match presentation, Harmanpreet Kaur didn’t mince words and slammed the umpires for their decisions. As per a report in ESPNcricinfo, Harman even wanted the umpires to join the Bangladesh team for photographs, implying that they were part of the home team.

“A lot of learning from this game, even apart from cricket. The type of umpiring that was happening there, we were very surprised. Next time, when we will come to Bangladesh, we will make sure we have to deal with such umpiring and accordingly, will prepare ourselves,” said Harmanpreet during the presentation.

Bangladesh Captain Nigar Sultana Hits Back At Harmanpreet Kaur

Meanwhile, Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana hit back at Harmanpreet Kaur for her behaviour and said that the India captain should have shown better manners.

The Bangladesh captain also backed the umpires and said that they are professional individuals and gave the decisions they felt were right. Sultana also took a swipe at Harman and said that she should not cry about poor calls as seven wickets to fall were either caught or run out.

“The umpires wouldn’t give her out if she wasn’t out. We had umpires from men’s international cricket, so they were good umpires. What are they [India] going to say about the caught or run-out dismissals [of which there were six excluding the Harmanpreet and Meghna wickets]? We have respected their decisions. The umpire’s decision is the final decision, whether I like it or not. Why didn’t we behave in that way [like the India players]?”

How Fair Was Harmanpreet Kaur’s Outrage At Umpires?

Cricket is a gentlemen’s game where the umpire’s decision is supreme. The umpires are humans and are bound to make errors. This is not something that is new to the game and the players are well aware of this. There have been instances in the past where batters have been given out unfairly, at times very close to a big landmark, and bowlers have been denied certain wickets.

To minimize the umpiring errors, DRS has been put in place but the technology too has its fair share of glitches. What Harmanpreet did was against the spirit of the game which is of utmost importance for the players and fans. Look at Kane Williamson, his team was denied a World Cup after a bizarre boundary count rule but he took the blow with a smile on his face. Harmanpreet should think about her behaviour in the final ODI as no player is bigger than the game itself and its integrity.

INDIAN captain Harmanpreet Kaur is likely to be fined 75 per cent of her match fee and will be receiving three demerits points. However, the trouble doesn’t end here for the star cricketer, if she receives one more demerit point in a span of 24 months, she will be banned from a Test match or two limited-over matches.

This happened after Harmanpreet Kaur’s furious reaction against the umpires and the Bangladesh team sparked a massive controversy.

In anger, she hit the stumps with her bat and exchanged a few angry words with the umpire before walking towards the pavilion. On the way, she showed a thumbs up to the crowd when she reached the boundary ropes.

Under the ICC Code of Conduct, Article 2.2 covers “Abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match,” which makes specific reference to “any action(s) outside the course of normal cricket actions, such as hitting or kicking the wickets.”

Harmanpreet Kaur Expresses Disappointment With ‘Pathetic’ Umpiring

After the ODI series decider between India and Bangladesh ended in a thrilling tie at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Saturday, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur came down heavily on umpiring in the match, calling it “pathetic” while adding that she was “really disappointed” with some decisions.

“They (Bangladesh) batted really well, batted according to the situation. They were taking those singles which were very crucial. In between we leaked a few runs but when we were batting, we controlled the game very well. But as I mentioned earlier, some pathetic umpiring was done and we are really disappointed about some decisions given by the umpires,” said Harmanpreet in the post-match presentation ceremony.

Harmanpreet went on to add that the Indian team will be better prepared to deal with the umpires’ questionable decision-making whenever they are in Bangladesh next time.

“I think a lot of learning for us from the game. Even apart from the cricket, the kind of umpiring that was happening we were very surprised. The next time when we come to Bangladesh we will make sure we have to deal with this type of umpiring and prepare ourselves accordingly.”

Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur started the new international season with a smashing half-century as the Indian women’s team cantered to a seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the opening T20 International here on Sunday.

Opting to bowl, the Indian spinners used the conditions to their advantage and restricted Bangladesh to a meagre 114 for 5.

In reply, Harmanpreet (54 not out 35 balls) and her deputy Smriti Mandhana (38 off 34 balls) added 70 runs for the third wicket to chase down the target in just 16.2 overs.

The skipper hit six boundaries and two sixes and made best use of the two reprieves that she got off left-arm spinner Nahida Akter’s bowling.

Mandhana was the pace-setter for India as she hit some delectable boundaries, five of them in all, including a rasping square cut off seamer Marufa Akter and an inside out lofted cover-drive. They were shots out of top drawer.

This was after the Indian bowlers set it up perfectly for the batters, who had to hardly break a sweat while chasing down an easy target.

The spin attack, led by the experienced Deepti Sharma (0/14 in 4 overs), along with debutants — slow left arm orthodox Anusha Bareddy (0/24 in 4 overs) and off-break bowler Minnu Manni (1/21 in 3 overs) — executed skipper Harmanpreet Kaur’s plan of bowling on one side of the wicket perfectly.

Leg-spinner Shafali Verma (1/18 in 3 overs) was also mostly on target, save a six that top-scorer Sorna Akhtar (28 off 28 balls) hit off her bowling.

The idea was to pack the off-side field with five fielders and bowl on the fourth or fifth off-stump line and the Bangladeshi batters, mostly right-handers, found it difficult to pierce the cordon.

This was after debutant Mani got her maiden wicket when Shamima Sultana (17), after tonking the offie for a six, couldn’t connect her slog sweep and Jemimah Rodrigues took a smart catch at square leg.

Pooja Vastrakar then softened Shathi Rani (22) with a short ball, before castling her with a perfect fuller delivery.

The experienced Nigar Sultana (2) was run-out and Shafali tossed one up to get rid of Shobhana Mostary (23 off 33 balls), who was getting increasingly frustrated.

In fact, Bangladesh consumed as many as 62 dot balls which is more than half of the innings, with only eight fours and three sixes in all. Two of those hits by Sorna ensured that the hosts crossed the 100-run mark.

When India started the chase, Shafali paid price for her lack of footwork as she was adjudged plumb in front while being rooted to the crease.

Rodrigues was played on when she tried to cut an off-break from Sultana Khatun.

However, once Harmanpreet and Mandhana joined forces, there was hardly any concern for the winning team

Bengaluru: Player-of-the-Match Harmanpreet Kaur said Indian batting is no more dependent on captain Mithali Raj and they have good top order batswoman, including opener VR Vanitha, to take up the challenge. “Of course good openers including Vanitha has helped me play freely. In the last two years, we did not have good openers and we all depended on Mithali (Raj), but things have changed for now. If Mithali doesn’t click in some matches, we take up the challenge and see the team through,” Kaur told reporters during post-match session at Chinnaswamy stadium. Replying to a query on the strategy adopted by the Indians after losing two quick wickets under ten overs, Kaur said she was advised by Mithali to settle down and the captain would go after the bowling since the pitch was turning.

“Mithali had already settled when I walked in. She told me to first settle down and she would go for the hits. This was the strategy because the wicket was turning unlike it didn’t the last time we played here,” she said. Kaur said she enjoyed both the sixes she hammered as they came at a very crucial time for her team when they were looking to raise the scoring rate.

Asked whether the match was won by India in first ten overs when the visiting side were struggling at 35 for three, Kaur said: “It is a T20 game. We were trying to look at full 20 overs, and then celebrate. It is the T20 game, and we cannot take anybody easily,”she said.

India Women started their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2016 journey on a high note as they registered a 72-run victory over Bangladesh Women in their very first match at M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Bangalore is known be one of the high-scoring grounds of India where the outfield is usually quick. Bangladesh Women won the toss and elected to bowl in search of quick wickets and a low target but the trick backfired and India Women posted a huge score of 163 which was beyond par looking at Bangladesh Women’s current form. Full Cricket Scorecard: India Women vs Bangladesh Women, Women’s T20 World Cup 2016, Match 1 Group B at Bangalore

India Women’s team is a balanced team with both in-touch batsmen and bowlers. Talking about the batting line-up, they have the strong pair of skipper Mithali Raj and VR Vanitha to open. Mithali is one of the most experienced batsman currently in world cricket, while she is in a very good form as well whereas the Bangladesh team mostly consists of young yet talented players. The experience helped the skipper judge the bowlers easily which subsequently resulted in a 42-run innings from her. Mithali was well supported by her partner VR Vanitha who scored 38 off just 24 deliveries. While Mithali played which can be called more of a composed innings, Vanitha went all guns blazing and started hitting from the very start and hit 7 fours in total. READ: India vs Bangladesh, Match 13, ICC Women’s T20 World Cup at Bengaluru: Mithali Raj’s world record and other highlights

Bangladesh seemed to be in the game just for once, during the two back to back wickets of Vanitha and the next in, Smriti Mandhana. Mandhana, who is known to be one of the finest batsmen of the side, could contribute none and departed for a duck facing 4 balls. Mithali also did not stay at the crease for long following the departure of the skipper. But that is where the Indian batting showed its class as the middle-order came to the rescue. The backbone of Indian middle order, Harmanpreet Kaur played brilliantly as usual, building up a partnership with Veda Krishnamurthy. While the Mithali-Vanitha partnership added 62 runs, Harmanpreet and Veda went on to add 41 and took the score beyond 160.

The runs put up by the Indian batsmen were enough to put the opponents under pressure. Not only the target acted as their winning factor, it was the pressure of the huge score, not taking away the credits of the India bowlers, that compelled the Bangladesh batsmen not play their natural game and their innings came to an end with only 95 runs.

Mithali Raj’s world record: Mithali, who has been a part of every ICC Women’s World T20 since the tournament was played for the first time in 2009, is easily the best Indian batsman by far in women’s cricket. She justified it once again when she surpassed England Women’s Charlotte Edwards as the over-all leading run-scorer of ICC Women’s World T20 with 583 runs from 18 matches. Before entering this match, Mithali was on 541 runs, 25 short of Charlotte, and she took no time to score those runs. Mithali’s 42 came off just 35 balls and included of 5 boundaries.

India Women’s highest T20I total: India Women posted 163 for 5 at the end of 20 overs, which turned out to be their highest-ever total in T20Is. Their previous best was 151 for 5 against the same opponents. The match was played in 2014 at Sylhet. Indian Women have crossed the 150-mark only twice. Barring Smriti Madhana and Anuja Patil, every member made crucial contributions with the bat.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s all-round effort: Harmanpreet was the Player of the Match for her quickfire 40 runs off 29 balls towards the end of India Women innings after the dismissal of set opening batsmen. Harmanpreet opened India’s account of sixes, smashing 2 of them, along with 3 boundaries before she was dismissed by Bangladesh’s Rumana Ahmed in the 18th over. In the next innings, she was handed the ball twice. She bowled her mixed bag, foxing the Bangladeshis, and returning figures of 2-0-6-0.

Anuja Patil: Anuja was easily the pick of the bowlers who was involved in all the Bangladesh dismissals. She bagged two wickets, claimed two catches and was a part of a superb run out that saw Bangladesh’s opener Sharmin Akhter walk back to the pavilion. In her quota of 4 overs, she gave away only 16 runs and adding to that, she was one of the best Indian fielders. Anuja’s excellent bowling removed the Ayasha Rahman and Fahima Khatum; she caught both of them, off Poonam Yadav.
