Manchester United (Man Uni) legend Rio Ferdinand has admitted his admiration for former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. Rio believes to be one of the best defenders to have ever joined the football pitch.

Cricket is considered to be a sport of a massive significance in India and Sachin Tendulkar is definitely one of the many reasons behind the popularity of the sport. Even though he announced his retirement 12 years ago, Tendulkar has remained significant along with stars like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

On The Ranveer Show Podcast, the 46-year-old former English international was asked about whether he remembers any Indian cricketers from his time, to which Ferdinand immediately named Sachin Tendulkar.

Tendulkar [Sachin]. He’s the guy, isn’t it? Tendulkar’s the guy. That’s the main, the main man. Who’s the other one? Is it [Virat] Kohli? I don’t know many but Tendulkar just always stood out to me. He’s the most charismatic and obviously what he achieved as well was like that was worldwide recognition. It’s not just cricket fans that hear about someone like him. And that’s someone that transcends the sport,” he said.

Both Ferdinand and Tendulkar are regarded as the stars in their respective sport. Sachin Tendulkar has a record of scoring 100 international centuries, which is still intact. He has amassed a massive total of 15,921 runs in Test matches, whereas in the limited overs format, he has collected 18,426 runs.

On the other hand, Ferdinand’s time period with Man Uni lasted for 12 long years, and he lifted the Premier League title six times, along with a Champions League, three League Cups, UEFA Super Cum and FIFA Club World Cup.

Indian team’s defeat in the fifth Border-Gavaskar series Test against Australia in Sydney not only saw them lose the series by 3-1 but also crushed their hopes of reaching the World Test Championship (WTC) final for the third consecutive time.

One of the main reasons why the Men in Blue slumped to the series defeat was star player Virat Kohli’s flop show with the bat in almost all the 5 matches.

While analyzing India’s defeat, former cricketer Irfan Pathan minced no words and brutally criticized Kohli, highlighting his disappointing numbers with the bat while questioning his place in the team. He also said that a youngster can contribute the same number of runs that Virat is currently giving to the team.

“In 2024, in the first innings, where the match is set, Virat Kohli only averages 15. Over the last 5 years, he doesn’t even average 30. Does the Indian team deserve this from a senior player? Instead of this, give a youngster consistent rope, even he can give an average of 25-30. It’s not about an individual, it’s about the team,” Pathan said on Star Sports.

Pathan believes that the ‘superstar culture’ within the Indian team needs to be brought to an end and wants team culture to prevail. He also questioned why Kohli hasn’t played domestic cricket in a long time, whereas even an all-time great like Sachin Tendulkar did when he was out of form.

“We need to end superstar culture, we need team culture. You need to improve yourself and improve the Indian team. There were matches before this series, too, and they had an opportunity to play domestic cricket, but they didn’t. We need to change that culture,” Pathan said.

“When was the last time Virat Kohli played domestic cricket? It has been more than a decade. Even Sachin Tendulkar has played domestic cricket more recently, and he has retired,” Pathan added.

“We are not degrading Virat Kohli. He has scored a lot of runs and played superbly for India, but you are repeating the same mistake again and again. Sunny sir (Sunil Gavaskar) has pointed it out, and he is here at the ground. How long does it take to come to Sunny sir and talk about that mistake? It takes hard work to rectify that mistake, and I didn’t see any of that,” Pathan further said.

The coveted Test series which is contested between the 2 heavyweights of the format, India and Australia is known as the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The currently ongoing series between the 2 sides comprises of 5 Tests. This is the first time that 5 matches are being played in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

The story behind the name of Border-Gavaskar Trophy is actually quite interesting. The first series between the 2 sides which was labelled as the Border-Gavaskar Trophy was contested back in 1996.

India and Australia had played against each other a total of 50 times in red-ball cricket till 1996. The boards of both countries decided to make the 51st Test match between the 2 sides special. They did so by naming the one-off Test played between the 2 sides as the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

The series played between the 2 countries has been named in honor of legendary India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar and former Australia captain Allan Border.

The first-ever Border-Gavaskar Trophy was won by a Sachin Tendulkar-led Indian team which defeated Australia comfortably by 7 wickets. The match was played at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium in Delhi.

Since 1996, a total of 16 Test series have been contested between the 2 teams with India emerging victorious in 10 while Australia coming out on top in 5. Finally, one series ended in a draw.

Former Australia captain Michael Clarke took a brutal dig on the Indian team following Ravindra Jadeja’s controversial press conference ahead of the Melbourne Test. During the conference, Jadeja refused to answer the Australian media in English and only spoke in Hindi.

Though there are still 2 matches to go in the Border-Gavaskar series, it has already been full of on-field and off-field incidents. Following Jadeja’s controversial interview, seamer Akash Deep refused to entertain the Australian journalists. Star India batter Virat Kohli was also involved in a verbal spat with the media on Melbourne airport.

Clarke reminded that MS Dhoni also didn’t address the media during an entire tour when he was leading the Indian team. He also mentioned that Sachin Tendulkar was also very restrictive around the Australian media.

“I don’t think much has changed, to be honest. I’ve experienced Indian teams coming here, and their captain, MS Dhoni, didn’t do one press conference during the entire Test series. So, Sachin was very restrictive around when he chose to do media. I think it’s been the same for a long time. So, I like the fact they’re still putting someone up,” Clarke told ESPN.

The former Australia skipper said that the fiery tone was first set by India head coach Gautam Gambhir with his press conference before the beginning of the series.

“I think they made it pretty clear before they left India what they were going to be like when they arrived in Australia. They’re going to stick to themselves, stick to their plan. Gambhir made that very clear in the first press conference. So, I don’t know why anybody’s surprised, and for them, it’d be about what’s happening on the field, not off the field. So, I don’t think even the chat around it would be bothering India too much,” Clarke said.

Former England cricketer James Foster praised Joe Root for his excellent performance in Test cricket. He also believes that Root has a high chance of surpassing Indian cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar in Test cricket and become the leading run-scorer in the longest format od the game.

Root is completely in his form, especially in the longest format of the game. Considering his current form, fans and former cricketers are debating whether the England star will score more Test runs than Sachin. Root only needs 2,949 runs in order to reach the highest run-total of 15,921 runs in Test cricket.

Former England cricketers have wondered the longevity of Root’s career, and the possibility of surpassing Sachin’s immaculate career-total.
James Foster put emphasis on the possibility of Root surpassing Sachin, along with admitting to the fact that he has a high chance of posting himself as the leading run-scorer in the format.

Joe is a world-class player. Joe continues to keep evolving his game. He has played so much cricket, but he is still very hungry. He just loves it. Anyone with that ability and quality who still has the hunger to perform and play cricket. He has probably got a very good chance,” Foster told ANI.

Root recently appeared for England in the Test series against New Zealand. He scored 218 runs in the series, averaging at 43.60 in three matches. He ended the series and became the leading run-scorer against New Zealand.

Legendary India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar recently advised Virat Kohli, who is struggling to score in the Australia Test series, to follow Sachin Tendulkar and his epic knock of 241 in Sydney where he didn’t play a single cover drive. This suggestion however, was met with disapproval from Virat’s childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma.

“Sunil Gavaskar has been a great player and his suggestions are always welcomed but I hope he suggests others also about their batting,” Sharma told PTI on Tuesday.

“He has been performing well since 2008. It will be unfair to say that he is out of form on the basis of two innings. He has already scored a hundred in this series. How many players have got a hundred in the series?,” Sharma added.

Kohli’s coach was also asked whether the batter feels bad for getting criticized after not scoring a single fifty in 8 consecutive Tests. To this question Sharma replied, “To be honest, I didn’t know much about the stats but the kind of player he is, he will bounce back. I think he is too good a player to be told anything and criticised because he has been the most consistent player in Indian cricket history.”

Sharma also revealed that he had spoken with Kohli, but didn’t disclose the details of their conversation to the media.

“We have been talking to each other and talked something that I wouldn’t say in public. But he is a mature enough player and knows where he is going wrong. He will bounce back and you’ll see that in the series itself,” Sharma concluded.
