Jay Shah is working on the idea of two-tier Test cricket if we are to believe on reports. According to a story by the Australian media outlet The Age, Shah was leading to host additional high-profile Test series in the cricket calendar along with Cricket boards from India, Australia, and England.

If the story is to be believed, this action comes after the record-breaking attendance of spectators during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), that featured five Test matches between India and Australia. There were a total of 837,879 spectators in stadiums, which made the BGT the most-attended non-Ashes series in the history of Australian cricket. This season of BGT was the fourth highest attended series in Australian cricket history after the Ashes series in 1936-37, 2017-18, and 2946-47.

2-tier former and its working:
According to the two-tier system, the top teams in cricket today, including India, Australia, England, South Africa, and New Zealand, will play against each other more frequently.
Other teams such as Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Ireland, and Zimbabwe are not known for their skills in Test cricket, and would be assigned to the second division of the format.

The teams that have not had much success in recent times like Bangladesh and West Indies may fall under this category. Though the low-tier teams will only play within their division, but the top-tier clubs will face one another in this format.

Possible teams in the structure:

1st Division:
South Africa, Australia, England, India, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Pakista

2nd Division:
West Indies, Bangladesh, Ireland, Afghanistan and Zimbabwe.

The tenure of Jay Shah with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has finally come to an end, as he has officially taken over as the Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Jay Shah is the successor of Greg Barclay, who was the holder of this position since 2020.

Jay Shah began his cricketing journey in 2009 as the district and state level, where it did not take him much time to rise through the ranks of Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA). he got elected as the BCCI secretary in 2019 as the youngest-ever secretary of the India Board.

After he took his new role, Jay Shah thanked the ICC directors and other board members for their support. He also stated that he will ensure the availability of best resources and platform for the cricketers around the world.

I am honoured to be starting in the role of ICC Chair and want to thank the ICC Directors and Member Boards for their support and trust in me to undertake this important role. This is an exciting time for the sport as we build up to the LA28 Olympic Games and strive to make cricket more inclusive and popular than ever before. We also stand at a critical juncture in terms of the coexistence of multiple formats and accelerating the growth of the women’s game. There is huge potential for the game of cricket globally, with so much opportunity to engage with existing and new fans, while ensuring the best resources and platforms for our cricketers around the world,” he said.

There were rumours floating earlier about Jay Shah having to wait longer to get his position in ICC because of the chaos regarding Champions Trophy 2024-25. But Greg Barclay certainly stepped down from his position, resulting in Jay Shah starting his tenure apart from all the rumours.

Since current BCCI secretary Jay Shah is going to step down from his position to become the new ICC Chairman, Rohan Jaitley has come out to be the front runner to take over his position as the new secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Jay Shah began his career in cricket administration in 2009 with the Gujarat Cricket Association, and has been the secretary of the BCCI since 2019.

Jay Shah is going to take over the role of the ICC Chairman from December 1, leaving a vacant spot for someone to take over as BCCI secretary.

It has come out that the secretary of the Gujarat Cricket Association, Anil Patel, and the current president of the Delhi Cricket body, Rohan Jaitley, will be going to run for the position of secretary.

It has come out that there will not be any Special General Meeting (SGM) held to discuss the appointment of the secretary.

When comparing these two contenders, it has come out that Rohan is being taken in as more favourable.

Jay Shah has become the youngest chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) after his 5-year tenure as the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Jay will be taking over the office from December 1, 2024, and will be the successor of Greg Barclay as has completed his tenure of four years.

The ICC currently has 16 members since there is not a Women’s director as of now. During the stage of nomination, Shah got backed up by 15 of the 16 members, and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was the one who quietly observed everything during the whole process of nomination.

As per a report, when boards like the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Cricket Australia (CA) were in support of Shah being appointed, PCB remained silent on the matter.

“There wasn’t any word from PCB. Not that it was required because Shah had overwhelming support from the members. But the Pakistan board preferred to play the role of a spectator during the entire process,” told a source.

Jay Shah has been elected without any opposition for the next chairman of the International Cricket Council. The BCCI secretary is going to replace Greg Barclay as he decided to leave after his current tenure will end in December.

Jay Shah is becoming the youngest ever to be selected as the ICC Chairman and has to now drop out from his post in the BCCI as soon as he takes charge in the governing body of International cricketing body.

BCCI does not have a fixed salary for the President, Secretary, Vice President and the Treasurer as all of them hold a ‘honorary’ rank on the board. However, all of them are paid allowances and reimbursements for all the work they do related to BCCI.

When Shah goes to a foreign country to attend ICC meeting or cricket tours, he is paid in daily allowance. The allowance given by the board is ₹84,000 ($1,000). Along with the foreign trips, Shah is also paid ₹40,000 per day for the meetings he attends in India.

He gets the luxury to travel by business class and all the domestic and international stays he makes are covered by BCCI. Jay Shah also gets paid ₹30,000 if he goes to any city in India for work apart from the meetings.

Shah will leave BCCI after his tenure of five-years, and will now take over a the independent chairman of the International Cricket Council starting December 1.

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif said that the appointment of Jay Shah as the chairman of International Cricket Council (ICC) will be of help for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). He also said that Jay Shah might put effort in sending the Indian team to Pakistan to play the 2025 edition of the Champions Trophy.

Pakistan is going to host the Champions Trophy for which BCCI is yet to decide if they want to send team India to the neighbouring nation for the tournament.

The last tine India travelled to Pakistan was in 2008 for the Asia Cup. Since then, India has not travelled to Pakistan for any series. This is because of political tensions and safety of players.

“PCB has not opposed Shah’s appointment for a reason. I think there’s an understanding. If India’s team comes, it will be because of Jay Shah’s efforts, along with support from their government.”

Rashid said that the decision made by BCCI in sending India to Pakistan is half granted and India is going to come to Pakistan for the event.

“Approval has already been halfway granted. India is coming to Pakistan.”

The recently elected chairman of the Indian Cricket Council, Jay Shah, has stated that one of his priorities will be to “dismantle barriers that have hindered cricket’s progress” and to make sure that Test cricket remains the “bedrock” of the game.

On December 1, the 35-year-old will resign from his current role as BCCI secretary to become the youngest ICC Chairman for a two-year term, replacing incumbent Greg Barclay.

“While the T20 is a naturally exciting format, it is equally important that Test cricket remains a priority for everyone as it forms the bedrock of our game,” Shah said in a statement issued by the BCCI on Tuesday.

“We must see to it that cricketers are driven to longer format and our efforts will be channelised towards this goal,” he added.

Shah mentioned that he would also like to work on establishing a different program for finding talent. He placed a strong emphasis on raising the bar for players everywhere.

“I want to reassure you that I will use every effort to raise the bar for our game everywhere. I’m determined to live up to your high standards and devote myself to the beautiful game of cricket as I take on this crucial responsibility,” he declared.

Shah, the son of union home minister Amit Shah, will step down from his role as BCCI secretary during the board’s annual general meeting, which is anticipated to take place in October or towards the end of next month.

Shah became the fifth Indian after the late Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan and Shashank Manohar to be elected for the high-profile job.

“With cricket poised to make its historic debut at the Olympics in 2028, we stand at the precipice of a transformative era. This juncture is not merely a milestone, it’s a clarion call for all of us involved in this magnificent sport.

“It is my privilege to lead the ICC during such an exciting period in our shared journey,” he stated.

Shah declared that he would support the development of women’s and differently-abled cricket players while serving as the ICC Chairman.

“By giving women’s cricket and differently-abled cricket more resources and attention, we must further champion the ICC’s objective. By working together, we can strengthen these crucial elements of the sport and ensure that they are not only noticeable but also thriving.”

“I eagerly anticipate a tenure rich with collaborative efforts, striving to dismantle the barriers that have hindered cricket’s progress. Every challenge we face is an opportunity in disguise, and together, we will transform adversity into triumph.

“Let’s embark on this incredible journey, hand in hand, united by our passion for cricket and our belief in its extraordinary potential,” Shah noted.
