The post Dinesh Karthik gives Strong Rejection to Jasprit Bumrah for Potential Captain for India appeared first on Cricket Country.

In a recent episode for Cricbuzz, Dinesh Karthik shared his views on Jasprit Bumrah being India’s captain in the near future. Though Bumrah has led the team in the past, he is currently not taken as someone fit for the role.

The idea of a pacer also being the captain is not common in Indian cricket. Pat Cummins has taken this role for Australia, but a similar case is yet to happen for India. Leadership qualities of Bumrah have been glorified by a lot of cricket experts. However his workload as a fast bowler raised fingers about him being suitable to lead India in all formats of cricket.

“Everything right … He is calm cool, good maturity but he is a fast bowler so how can we play him for all three formats that is the biggest question the selectors would have had,” Karthik said.

“For a fast bowler like Bumrah, his fitness needs to be monitored and he needs to be protected as a player and only made to play in important matches, I keep saying this about Bumrah, he is like a Kohinoor diamond, we got to protect him, take care of him, make sure that he lasts as long as possible because whenever Bumrah plays in any format he makes an impact and that’s what we want,” Karthik further added.

Though there are rumours about Bumrah being a possible candidate to be the captain , he is still open to the chance of getting the role. In fact, considering him leading India in a couple games, Bumrah has named himself as his favourite captain.

“See, my favourite captain is me because I have captained a few games. Obviously, there are great captains but I would take my name that I am my favourite captain,” was the statement given by Bumrah.

Rahul Dravid: A Touch of Luck Can Make All the Difference https://www.cricketcountry.com/news/dravid-a-touch-of-luck-can-make-all-the-difference-1183619/ https://www.cricketcountry.com/news/dravid-a-touch-of-luck-can-make-all-the-difference-1183619/#respond Thu, 22 Aug 2024 10:25:11 +0000 https://www.cricketcountry.com/?p=1183619 According to Dravid, there has been a significant shift in the way Indian players perceive, with them now viewing themselves as leaders.

Referencing India’s devastating loss to Australia in the ODI World Cup final and his team’s incredible comeback from a vulnerable position against South Africa in the T20 World Cup final, the great Rahul Dravid acknowledged that occasionally a small amount of luck can have a significant impact on the outcome of big matches.

With a 10-match winning streak, India had dominated the ODI World Cup final the previous year. However, nothing worked when the best team in the competition faced Australia in the championship match.

Six months later, Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma worked together to settle the outstanding issues. They were up against a tough South Africa to win the trophy, but fortune was on their side.

Dravid reminded the players on Wednesday how important it was to adhere to the tried-and-true method and pray for good fortune to favor them against the Proteas at Barbados on June 29, having learned from the amazing highs and lows.

“I’ve had time to reflect on it. I’ve had time to reflect on a lot of things we’ve done. You do realise, sometimes, you have to do a lot of these things, you have to do the process, you have to do everything right,” Dravid, who was chosen for Life Time Achievement honour during the Ceat Cricket Rating Awards, said.

“Sometimes at the end of the day, you need a little bit of luck. (Against South Africa in T20WC final)… 30 balls to go, 30 runs to go. (It was about) incredible execution, incredible calmness by Rohit.”

“We didn’t focus on what we needed to do, but we needed a guy who could keep his foot within one inch of a line. Sometimes (it is) the skill,” he said without mentioning Suryakumar Yadav’s juggling act at the ropes to complete David Miller’s dismissal.

India had taken the lead in the match thanks to that catch.

Dravid then recounted how, in the ODI World Cup final, India came within a whisker of dismissing Travis Head, but the opener, riding on sheer serendipity, struck a match-winning century that, in a one blow, dashed a billion dreams.

“(On) 19th November… I remember whatever it was, we beat Travis Head’s bat 15 times — he didn’t touch a single ball. You know, things can go your way sometimes, but you have to stick to the process,” the articulate Dravid circled back to sticking to the basics.

After winning the championship, Dravid stepped down as India’s coach.

Dravid praised India’s bench strength and capacity to produce elite cricket players on a regular basis, saying that the current crop of players has effectively continued the legacy of the “Fab Five.”

Virender Sehwag, VVS Laxman, Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, and Dravid himself comprised the Fab-five that captivated cricket fans across the world.

“I left in 2011-2012. These players have been able to carry the legacy forward. If you just look at the success that we’ve had over the last 12 years in all the three formats of the game, the time that after we left, it’s been absolutely phenomenal,” he said.

“Very easily, clearly in a lot of the rankings, we’re always (No.) 1 or 2… we’re always up there with anyone. To be able to go out and win that, just the kind of cricket that we play, the level of skill of some of our players, the way that they approach the game, is great,” he said.

Dravid hoped Team India will continue to have success in the coming years.

“I have no doubt that this generation of players, led by people like Rohit and Surya and the (other) guys coming forward in all formats of the game is only going to continue to do that in the future,” he said.

Dravid said while Indian cricketers now are fearless and confident, they also have world-class infrastructure to back their skill sets.

“A lot of them are really fearless. The confidence of a young Indian, and I don’t mean just cricketers, that’s just great. It just gladdens your heart so much.

“The opportunities that young Indians have today. It’s just nowhere in the world. You feel like maybe even growing up at times that you could have your talent and you had abilities, but sometimes you didn’t have the support or the infrastructure to be able to achieve your dreams.”

None of the Indians can still say that now. They all have excellent support systems and infrastructure, and it reflects in how they conduct themselves and hold themselves to the highest standards.

According to Dravid, there has been a significant shift in the way Indian players perceive, with them now viewing themselves as leaders.

“Young India expects they can be world-class, they can be world-leaders, and that is a phenomenal change from the time that I was a young man,” he stated.

Senior fast bowler Ishant Sharma, who is currently under Purani Dilli 6 for the ongoing Delhi Premier League, is looking forward to play his first match in the DPL 2024. Purani Dilli 6 will go against East Delhi Riders on Tuesday, and will face West Delhi Lions on Wednesday.

“Preparation for DPL has been good. I didn’t get much time to practice after the IPL. Just a little more preparations for my franchise and I’ll be ready to take the field in DPL. You all will see me bowling in the coming games for Purani Dilli 6,” said Ishant Sharma.

Ishant Sharma will be playing an important role in the DPL, as he will be guiding the young and less experienced players with his higher skills. He said, “My message for young players is to keep working hard and believe in your abilities, this format might be cruel but if trust your abilities and work hard you can do wonders in any format.”

Akash Nangia, owner of the Purani Dilli 6 team, also gave his opinion on Ishant Sharma leading the team.

“Ishant Sharma brings a wealth of experience to Purani Dilli 6. His guidance and mentorship are invaluable to our younger players. Having someone of his caliber in the squad enhances the learning curve for the entire team. He has been regular in the training session and we are all looking forward to his bowling,” said Akash.

Whether it's a bouncer, yorker, or a swing, Bumrah has it all, which makes him a perfect package of a bowler. Shockingly, he used to learn bowling through television when he was in the early days of playing cricket.

Jasprit Bumrah has been one of India’s premium bowlers in all formats in the past few years. Ever since his debut in 2016, Bumrah had helped India in many victories which were memorable. Bumrah was recorded to be at his best during India’s campaign at the 2024 T20 World Cup.

In the bowling department, be it a bouncer, a spin, or a yorker, Bumrah initiates every ball with elegance. This makes him a perfect package as a bowler. Surprisingly, he has not taken much of a formal training and used to learn fast bowling through television in the early time of his cricketing days.

Bumrah recently has revealed that since he didn’t have any proper action for bowling, he used to watch TV and copy whoever would take wickets.

“I didn’t get a lot of formal training and my mother also didn’t want me to play cricket till I finished Class X because she thought that I would not be able to focus on my education, so the only way that I could learn was through televisions. As a child, I used to copy whoever took wickets because I didn’t have my own proper action,” said Bumrah.

“I think that jumbled up and became something interesting that I have now. But yes, I was fascinated by left arm bowlers as well. I used to try and bowl with my left arm. I am ambidextrous, so I can do that but obviously there is a pace difference,” he added.

Bumrah is known for his wicket taking deadly Yorkers, when asked about it he said it’s the first delivery he observed in cricekt.

“I watched a lot of television and this delivery is like a cinematic thing, so for a youngster, it’s exciting. It’s probably the first delivery I observed in cricket,” he said.

“That’s how I developed it and when I came into serious cricket, I realised that I have a skill. But along with that I cannot be a one-trick pony,” he said.

“The narratives can change every now and then but in my head, I have a lot of confidence that I am good …. As a child, I fell in love with fast bowling and I wanted to make my team win,” he said.

Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali expressed how he is unsatisfied with the latest ICC ODI rankings, particularly rising question for the top ranking of Babar Azam even taking in consideration the absence of Babar from ODI cricket since November 2023.

Basit said that by keeping Babar at the top spot, the ICC might be knowingly preventing Babar from performing. He further raised some concern covering the overall logic of their ranking system, pointing out the absence of prominent batters like Travis Head (AUS) and Rachin Ravindra (NZ) from the top positions.

“When I saw the ICC ranking (ODI batters), Babar Azam was at the top, number two was Rohit Sharma, number three was Shubman Gill, and then there was Virat Kohli at number four. I did not find it necessary to read the remaining names because I couldn’t see Travis Head and Rachin Ravindra. I think the ICC wants that Babar doesn’t perform. He would be happy with being the number one-ranked batter in ODIs. Who gives these rankings? On what basis are Babar Azam and Shubhman Gill there,” Basit said.

“Babar’s last ODI was at the last year’s World Cup. We saw the likes of Rachin Ravindra, Quinton de Kock, Travis Head and Virat Kohli at the World Cup. They scored three-four hundreds in the tournament. For Pakistan, Mohammad Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman scored a century each. What kind of ranking do they give,” he further added.

The national sports complex in Blanchardstown, near Dublin, is the site of the national cricket stadium that the Irish government has announced plans to build. Ireland, England, and Scotland will co-host the T20 World Cup in 2030, and the stadium will be used to stage matches during that tournament.

In the government’s statement, it is stated that the facility’s first phase of development will be completed by 2028. This stage will include building the main stadium, which can accommodate 4,000 people in seats.

To further aid in the growth of cricket in Ireland, the complex will include practice arenas and a specialized performance center.

“It is really pleasing to see how the sport has grown, at all levels, in Ireland over recent years,” Catherine Martin, minister for sport said. “A National Stadium and high performance centre will provide Cricket Ireland with the facilities required to further grow participation numbers.”

Cricket Ireland’s CEO, Warren Deutrom, said that the significance of the latest news is comparable to that of Ireland’s 2017 full membership status in the International Cricket Council (ICC).

“It is a huge tribute to everybody involved at all levels in Irish cricket who have got us to the stage whereby the government genuinely regards us as a sport of national significance worthy of major investment,” he said.

All-rounder Hardik Pandya of India likes to hang out by the pool when he’s not busy playing cricket.

Pandya was recently seen at a picturesque site taking advantage of a sunny morning amid stunning, rocky mountains.

He uploaded a video to Instagram that included details of his trip.

Pandya is spotted strolling beside a swimming pool while dressed casually. He looked amazing with a half-sleeve textured shirt with black and grey designs put over a white vest.

Pandya finished off his holiday ensemble with black sunglasses and white sneakers. He wore them with baggy pants.

The 30-year-old was last seen playing in the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka, which India won handily because to Suryakumar Yadav’s leadership.

Pandya participated in the series’ first two games but was rested for the final game, giving way to Shivam Dube.

After sweeping the T20I series, India faced their Asian neighbors in three One-Day Internationals (ODIs). The Men in Blue lost 0–2 and were unable to duplicate the triumph in the 50-over format.

Pandya cited personal reasons for missing the ODI portion of the Sri Lanka tour.

The bilateral assignment came after India’s historic victory in the second T20 World Cup in Barbados.

Pandya, who was instrumental in the campaign’s success, will undoubtedly remember the competition as a career high point.

When the Proteas needed 16 runs in the high-stakes match against South Africa, Pandya delivered the last over of the match.

In order to put India ahead and complete the victory, Pandya took two of David Miller’s vital wickets. He also successfully defended the total.

The winners of the T20 World Cup participated in a triumph parade in Mumbai following their return to India.

After four years of marriage, he later announced his separation from wife Natasa Stankovic on social media.

“After four years of being together, Hardik and I have decided to mutually part ways. We tried our best together and gave it our all, and we believe this is in the best interest of both of us. This was a tough decision for us to make, given the joy, mutual respect, and companionship we enjoyed together and as we grew as a family,” Pandya wrote in a statement on Instagram.

“We are blessed with Agastya, who will continue to be at the centre of both of our lives, and we will co-parent to ensure that we give him everything that we can for his happiness,” he added.

Before signing off, the 30-year-old requested his fans to give his family “privacy during this difficult and sensitive time.”

Former England cricketer Graham Thorpe was having a battle with his mental health as he was suffering from depression and anxiety, along with having a failure in his health for the past 2 years. All of this information was revealed by his wife Amanda. Graham passed away on August 5. The announcement of his demise was declared by the England and Wales Cricket Board. Now his wife recently revealed that before he took his own life, he had a long battle with himself both physically and mentally.

“Despite having a wife and two daughters whom he loved and who loved him, he did not get better,” said Amanda.

“He was so unwell in recent times and he really did believe that we would be better off without him and we are devastated that he acted on that and took his own life.”

In memory of Thorpe, a ceremony was held before the start of a match between the Fernham Cricket Club and Chipstead Cricket Club last Saturday. This ceremony was attended by his wife and both his daughters.

“For the past couple of years, Graham had been suffering from major depression and anxiety. This led him to make a serious attempt on his life in May 2022, which resulted in a prolonged stay in an intensive care unit,” said Amanda.

His wife revealed that Thorpe kept suffering even after having intense work pressure.

“Despite glimpses of hope and of the old Graham, he continued to suffer from depression and anxiety, which at times got very severe. We supported him as a family and he tried many, many treatments but unfortunately none of them really seemed to work,” she said.

Thorpe’s daughter Kitty said that he was not the same person after a certain point and he could just not see a way out of this.

“It was strange to see this person trapped in the body of Dad. That’s why we’ve been so happy that the many reflections have been about his life before this illness took over.”
