Legendary India  cricketer Sachin Tendulkar on Sunday said that women are the backbone of our country. Speaking at ‘Kolkata police annual sports meet-2018’, Sachin said, “As far as women power is considered, I feel they are the backbone of India. I still remember, as a child when one would come back home, one would always expect mother to be around. Do everything possible for you and we took all those things for granted,” he added.

Acknowledging the efforts of housewives and working women, the former player said, “For women to take care of their house and to do their job is credible and full marks to you for your commitment.” Tendulkar was sharing the stage with legendary footballer P.K. Banerjee.

Lauding the Kolkata police, Tendulkar said, “Feeling secure is bit like driving. Safe driving is when the passengers feel safe. And here, Kolkata police is the driver and we are the passengers. We feel safe and secure when you are around.”

The idea of allowing women participating in managerial positions is catching up. Cricket to lately has seen shift its focus on women’s game. In a unprecedented move, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) on Monday set history by appointing a woman, Priyanka Thorave, as its treasurer. This is the first time that a woman will attain a post of a senior office-bearer of a state cricket association or even the BCCI. The state associations seem to have been impressed by Committee of Administrators (CoA) that asked them to appoint one or two women representatives in the governing body.

Abhay Apte was announced as the President, while Priyanka was selected as the treasurer.  The previous treasurer, Vikas Katakar, had quit on health grounds. Priyanka received backing from President Apte.

On being appointed as the treasurer, Apte spoke to The Times of India and said, “This is perhaps the first time in the history of BCCI that a woman office-bearer has been elected. Priyanka represents one of the founder clubs, the Club of Maharashtra, here and her appointment was unanimous in the general body of MCA. Everyone supported her candidature and she rightly deserves to be in cricket administration.” Apart from her President, Priyanka herself was elated, “I am overwhelmed by the support of the MCA members. I hope to give it my best shot and hopefully I can prove my worth in the association. I am looking forward to working for the game.”

Priyanka has been associated with cricket administration for four years. She is a management professional who has worked for multinational e-retail company. “I played cricket during my childhood days but now I follow the game passionately,” Priyanka added.

However, there was pressure on Apte to take over the presidency role as there was no responsible candidate to handle the upcoming India and New Zealand series.

West Indies women’s team management say their side will not be distracted by the controversy surrounding their male counterparts. The West Indies women arrived here last week to face hosts Australia in a bilateral series, even as the West Indies men’s side took the unprecedented step of abandoning their tour of India over a pay dispute with their union — the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA), reports CMC.

Captain Merissa Aguilleira said while her team were aware of the issues, they remained focused on their upcoming matches. “We’ve been following it, it’s been hard but we don’t want it to distract us. We came here to represent the West Indies and we want to make sure our fans aren’t disappointed,” Aguilleira said.

“We’re here to play cricket, that’s our focus. I really wish the guys good luck and I know they’re going through a tough time right now.” The West Indies men walked out on the tour of India last Friday following the fourth One-Day International (ODI) at Dharamsala, upset over new contracts they have claimed would result in a drastic reduction in their earnings.

The move sparked an angry response from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) who have since announced they would sue the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) for losses and also suspend future bilateral series. Women’s coach Sherwin Campbell said he hoped the issue could be resolved amicably but stressed that his side would not be affected by the developments.

“We are separate teams and separate tours and we are focused on that,” said Campbell, a former West Indies vice-captain, who played 52 Tests. “You don’t want to see teams not being able to go to events, so hopefully they can resolve the issue as quickly as possible.” The West Indies women face Australia in four Twenty20 Internationals and four ODIs, starting 2 Nov.
