Samit Dravid, who was just called up for the first time by India for the multi-format home series against Australia, will not be playing for the Boys in Blue in 2026 when they compete in the ICC Men’s U19 World Cup. In 2026, Samit won’t be able to participate in the ICC Men’s U19 World Cup.

Samit, one of the two sons of former India captain Rahul Dravid, will turn 21 on the day the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announces the team for the ICC Men’s U19 World Cup 2026. Samit is now 18 years and 297 days old.

Samit will therefore be unable to follow in his father’s footsteps and compete in the prestigious U19 event. Because the ICC did not host an U19 World Cup between 1988 and 1998, Rahul was also unable to participate in one throughout his playing career.

In the event that Pakistan had defeated Australia, India and its bitter rival would have faced off in a second final of the ICC U19 World Cup. In the Under-19 World Cup semifinal match against Australia on Thursday night at Willowmoore Park in Benoni, Pakistan captain Saad Baig was a busy man, continually switching up his bowlers and altering his fields. It was rewarded with Pakistan storming back, led by Ali Raza’s four-wicket haul, but it had an unforeseen effect prior to the start of the last over, when the side required to win by defending four runs or taking one wicket. Pakistan lost by one wicket and missed the chance to get a date with India for the championship match as a result of Baig’s compliance with the new ICC regulation.

Having previously introduced the penalty for slow over rates in T20I cricket, ICC had established an in-match penalty rule in ODIs in late 2022. According to the rule, for every over the fielding team falls short of the agreed cut-off time for the innings, after considering time allowances into play, they ought to have an extra fielder inside the ring. For example, if a team completes 48 overs within the scheduled cessation time of the innings, then they will have an extra fielder inside the circle for the last two overs, leaving only four fielders outside the ring.

Pakistan had to field one extra fielder on Thursday, bringing fine leg into the ring, since they finished their 49 overs ahead of the planned cut-off time. Australia’s No. 8 Raf MacMilllan got an inside edge against a length ball outside off from Mohammad Zeeshan in the opening ball of the final over, and the ball went past short fine leg for a boundary.

While providing analysis, former West Indies cricketer Ian Bishop stated that Pakistan would have had a fielder at fine leg and the winning boundary would have only been a single if they had not broken the over-rate rule.

Musheer Khan’s ICC U19 World Cup 2024 performance has already been outstanding. As of right now, he leads the competition in runs scored, and with a semi-final match against South Africa coming up on Tuesday, he has an opportunity to further establish his legacy with other greats of Indian cricket who followed a similar route.

Sarfaraz Khan, the elder brother of Musheer, was one of them. He participated in this competition twice, in 2014 and 2016, and he was just called up to the Indian Test team for the upcoming series against England.

Sarfaraz’s path has not been without difficulties, and Musheer feels fortunate to be able to learn from someone who has been through this before. He has watched his brother’s profession intently and has picked up whatever knowledge he could. These days, his older sibling serves as both a confidante and a source of inspiration.

ALSO WATCH:

When asked about his brother’s influence, Musheer told ICC, “The first thing he told me was that there is no bigger pride than playing for India.” “He taught me to have fun on the pitch and to always lift the team up in any circumstance to win the game, whether it be with the bat or the ball.

He advised me to play to the best of my abilities because I am representing the nation. Sarfaraz has taught me a lot of things, including how to construct an innings and how he bats, constantly considering how to win the game for his team.

“He didn’t care about the outcome; he was only concerned with scoring runs and enjoying the process, even as he was pounding on the doors of the Indian squad.” I’m also focused on the procedure.

While his brother continues to be a significant role model, Sachin Tendulkar is Musheer’s greatest inspiration, as he is for nearly all Mumbai-born cricket players.

That was demonstrated during a memorable moment against New Zealand when Musheer produced a stunning upper-cut, which led pundits to draw attention to the startling parallel to the Little Master’s influence.

Musheer considers his early years, when he was still a young boy and his father was keeping a close check on him, as he works to establish his reputation.

“My father used to take me outside to play cricket when I was younger, when I was around five or six years old,” the man said. “I gradually started playing cricket after watching my brother play.”

Musheer gives his father credit for guiding him through the challenging times. “I was always advised to keep working hard by my father. You must acknowledge that obstacles are a constant as you continue on.

Playing at the top level of domestic cricket has enabled Musheer to adjust well to the obstacles that come with playing in a World Cup. He has already played three first-class matches for Mumbai, which he described as the “turning point in my career so far.”

In the U19 Men’s CWC, the top three teams from each of the first four groups have advanced to the Super Six, the next round of action. This is your rundown of every important information for what looks to be an exciting round of fixtures.

Recap of the tournament
So far, the event has been quite exciting. There have been thrilling low-scoring games and high-scoring matches, fearless batting efforts and explosive bowling spells.

India emerged victorious from Group A, having won three comfortable matches in Bloemfontein. Bangladesh bounced back from their defeat to India with consecutive victories, and Ireland secured their third spot in the tournament after easily defeating the USA in their opening match.

Excellent individual and team efforts were seen in Group B during a number of close games where the top three teams ended with equal points. Along with hosts South Africa, England, and the West Indies, who all advanced ahead of fourth-placed Scotland, they each won two and lost one.

Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, and Australia advance to the Super Six in Group C. Australia defeated Namibia and Sri Lanka in their group stage matches, going undefeated overall. Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka came in second and third, respectively.

ALSO WATCH:

Two of the tournament’s most thrilling finishes came down to the wire in Group D’s two matchups. Pakistan finished first in the league, but to guarantee their places in the Super Six, New Zealand and Nepal had to fight past Afghanistan in one-wicket victories.

Best in Class
Ubaid Shah and Shahzaib Khan of Pakistan have shown notable performance in the runs and wickets categories, respectively.

With 223 runs to his name, Shahzaib leads all run scorers going into the Super Six stage. He has been the cornerstone of Pakistan’s batting order thus far. Jewel Andrew of the West Indies (196 runs) and Musheer Khan of India (194 runs) trail him.

Shahzaib, a rock at the top, has opened his innings by appearing calm and steady before launching into a wide range of attacking blows. Due to his heroics in winning the matches against Afghanistan (106 from 126 balls) and New Zealand (80 from 86 balls), he has now been named Player of the Match twice.

Pakistan’s new-ball phenomena has been Ubaid. With nine wickets, he leads all other scorers in the tournament, including Afghanistan’s Khalil Ahmed, Nepal’s Aakash Chand, India’s Saumy Pandey, and Naman Tiwari, who each have eight wickets. In his team’s early victories, the Pakistani spinner has produced an amazing amount of movement with the ball, claiming four wickets for 26 against Afghanistan and three for 30 against New Zealand.

Khan Musheer (India)
Musheer Khan has been India’s batting staple in the competition thus far, with shots all over the wicket. He scored 118 off 106 balls for a spectacular century against Ireland, and then he hit 73 off 76 balls against the USA. Musheer has been the engine in an Indian lineup with a surplus of anchors, and he has performed admirably.

So far in the tournament, Musheer is the third-highest run scorer with 194 runs in three innings at an average of 64.66. Interestingly, in the three games, he has also scored at a strike rate of over 100.

After being acquainted with the pitch at Bloemfontein’s Mangaung Oval, Musheer turns his attention to Nepal and New Zealand during the Super Six phases. Musheer need look no further for inspiration. In the U19 Men’s CWC, his brother Sarfaraz Khan holds the record with the most scores of fifty or more (7). Musheer has now recorded two wins in three games, which is more than a respectable start to the competition.

Important Match: New Zealand vs. India, Bloemfontein, January 30
Protecting the winners India is one of the favourites to go to the next round after securing two wins by margins of more than 200 runs. They took all four points into the Super Sixes. But New Zealand has already proven that they are resilient, and they might pull a surprise in Bloemfontein.

The youthful Blackcaps have a plenty of skill, particularly in the area of pace. India’s top-order, which has so far taken its time to settle in, could be troubled by Matt Rowe and Mason Clarke, who have already drawn attention.

Nevertheless, India’s stronghold in the competition thus far has been Bloemfontein. Their bowling lineup has been very successful at the ground; Saumy Pandey, Raj Limbani, and Naman Tiwari are all capable of being very dangerous again.

After a superb bowling performance by Raj Bawa (5/31) and Ravi Kumar (4/34) helped bowl out England for 189 despite a fighting 95 by James Rew, India rode on half-centuries by Shaik Rasheed (50) and Nishant Sindhu (50 not out) to reach 195/6 in 47.4 overs and win the match by four wickets.

Besides winning the five titles, the Indian colts have also finished runners-up thrice — 2006, 2016 and 2020.

India bagged their first title in 2000 in what was the third edition of the event when Mohammad Kaif’s side beat hosts Sri Lanka by six wickets in Colombo.

Kaif’s India restricted Sri Lanka to 178 after the hosts elected to bat and then chased the target with ease, thanks to an unbeaten 39 by Reetinder Singh Sodhi and 27 by Yuvraj Singh, who was eventually adjudged the ‘Man of the Series’. Sodhi received the ‘Man-of-the-Match’ award. The excellent fielding by the Indians, who affected four run-outs, was the highlight of the first innings.

Their next title in the biennial event came in 2008 in Malaysia when the team led by Virat Kohli defeated South Africa U-19 by 12 runs via D/L Method to win the country’s second U-19 World Cup crown.

It was a brilliant performance by the bowlers that clinched the title for India in a tense match that was cut short by rain. Bowled out by South Africa for 159 at Kuala Lumpur, the Indians came roaring back as South Africa chased a revised target. Ajitesh Argal, Ravindra Jadeja and Siddharth Kaul claimed two wickets apiece as India restricted their rivals to 103/8 in 50 overs to win the match by 12 runs. Argal bagged the ‘Man-of-the-Match’ award with figures of 5-2-7-2 in the final.

India’s third title came in 2012 when Unmukt Chand’s team thrashed hosts Australia by six wickets at Townsville.

Pacer Sandeep Sharma claimed 4/54 as India elected to bowl and restricted the Aussies to 225/8 in 50 overs. In response, Unmukt Chand struck a century (111) while wicketkeeper Smit Patel contributed an unbeaten 62 as India, who had finished second in the league, romped to a six-wicket victory. Unmukt, India’s best batsman in the event, was declared ‘Man of the Match’ in the final.

India again defeated Australia in the final to win their fourth title, which came after a gap of six years in 2018. The team led by Prithvi Shaw thrashed Australia by eight wickets in a low-scoring final played at Mount Maunganui, New Zealand.

Australia elected to bat first but were bowled out for 216 in 47.2 overs thanks to clinical bowling by Ishan Porel (2/30), Shiva Singh (2/30), Kamlesh Nagarkoti (2/41) and Anukul Roy (2/32) and Australia lost wickets at regular intervals.

In reply, India rode on a run-a-ball century by Manjot Kalra (101 off 102) while Harvik Desai contributed an unbeaten 47 as Shaw’s team romped to 220/2 in 38.5 overs, winning the final by eight wickets with 67 balls to spare.
