India captain Harmanpreet Kaur climbed to the ninth spot while opener Smriti Mandhana remained fourth in the latest ICC Women’s ODI rankings, released here on Tuesday.

This comes after Kaur played an impressive knock of 59 runs from 63 deliveries in the third and final ODI of the series against New Zealand. The innings pushed her back into the top 10.

Left-hander Mandhana, who won the player of the match award for her knock of 100 in the third ODI, added 23 rating points to reach a tally of 728. The list is led by England’s Natalie Sciver-Brunt with 760 rating points. Also, wicketkeeper-batter Yastika Bhatia moved up from 48th to 45th after chipping in with 35 runs

In the bowling chart, seasoned spinner Deepti Sharma gained important rating points after helping India win the series 2-1. The all-rounder added 16 points to take her tally to 703 rating points thanks to her valuable bowling spell of 3/39 to hold onto the second spot. England’s left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone enjoys a huge lead at the top with 770 rating points.

India pacer Renuka Singh was up four places to 32nd while Saima Thakor (up 20 places to joint-77th) and Priya Mishra (up six places to 83rd) also progressed.

India is currently placed on 3rd position in the ICC Women’s Championship standings with 25 points, behind Australia and England who have 28 points each.

After suffering a 9-run defeat against Australia in their final group stage match of the T20 World Cup, Indian head coach Amol Muzumdar admitted that things could have been different for his team if they had held on to couple of chances on the field.

At the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, India dropped 3 catches, missed a stumping and a run-out chance as Australia posted 151/8 in 20 overs, the highest total at this venue in the tournament so far.

In reply, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur’s valiant knock of 54 wasn’t enough to save the Women in Blue as they finished the group stages with 2 victories and defeats each from 4 matches.

“I think we were right in the game, right till the last over. Just that experience of Australia saw them through. Just a little disappointed with the loss. I feel we’ve fielded pretty well. But if a couple of chances could have been taken, then things could have been different. Maybe 10 -15 runs less, but at the same time, I would like to say that we put in our best effort forward in this game,” Muzumdar said after the match ended.

Muzumdar also revealed the chat that he had with Harmanpreet and Deepti Sharma who formed a partnership of 63 from 55 balls to keep India in the hunt.

“First and foremost, it was about the run-chase. Second was keeping the net run rate also in bounds. But the only message was if we take it a little deeper, then we do have a good chance to chase. That was the only message to Harman and Deepti. I think Harman’s presence was very important till the end, that is what I felt in the run chase, and almost got it through,” Muzumdar said.

With Australia entering the semi-finals from Group A, it means India’s chances of entering the last four phase are totally dependent on the New Zealand-Pakistan clash on Monday. A win for New Zealand will mean a league-stage exit for India. Muzumdar wished Pakistan the best of luck ahead of their match against the White Ferns.

“Well, I just want to wish Pakistan all the best. That’s all I can say. But we will be watching the game very closely, that’s for sure,”  Muzumdar said.

It will be interesting to see if Pakistan can come out victorious against New Zealand because if that happens then India will qualify for the semi-final stage due to their net run-rate being higher than the White Ferns.

Following India’s narrow 9-run defeat against Australia in the Women’s T20 World Cup, Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur said that she and Deepti Sharma failed to punish a few balls from their opponents during their partnership, which ultimately contributed to their loss.

A fantastic over by Annabel Sutherland which saw her give away only 4 runs, restricted India to 142/9 after their 20 overs, resulting in Australia’s victory at Sharjah on Sunday.

Following the match, Harmanpreet said in the post-match presentation that the key difference between both sides was the Australian team not depending on just one or two players.

“I think their entire team contribute, they don’t depend on one or two players, they have a lot of all-rounders who contribute. We also planned well and we were there in the game. They didn’t give away easy runs and made it difficult. They are an experienced side. That is something that is not in your control, you have to always keep your playing eleven ready even when one or two player misses out,” Harmanpreet said.

“Radha bowled really well, she was in the game and she was fielding well. You need a character like that in the team who is always there. It was a chaseable total. When me and Deepti were batting, we could not hit a few loose balls. We can learn a lot from Australia. Whatever was in our hands, we were trying to do that but that is something not in our control. If we get the opportunity to play another game, that will be great. But otherwise, whoever deserves to be there, that team will be there,” Harmanpreet added.

This defeat means that now India will have to depend on arch-rivals Pakistan to pull off a result against New Zealand in their final group stage match. If that does happen, then India will make it to the semi-finals due to their higher net run-rate.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur struck an unbeaten 54 but India’s nine-run loss to six-time champions Australia took her side’s fate for a semifinal spot out of their hands in the women’s T20 World Cup here on Sunday.

With Australia marching into the semifinals undefeated, the defeat meant India will now have to wait for the outcome of third-placed New Zealand’s match against Pakistan on Monday.

A win for New Zealand will see them leapfrog India and finish at the second spot. India may currently have a better Net Run Rate but have the same points (4).

Renuka Singh Thakur (2/24) and Deepti Sharma (2/28) played pivotal roles in the bowling department, but Australia posted 151 for 8 after opting to bat.

While Renuka struck twice early on, Deepti grabbed the crucial wickets of Grace Harris (40) and Ellyse Perry (32) in later stages.

However, contributions from Harris, Perry, stand-in skipper Tahlia Mcgrath (32) and an important knock of 15 runs from 9 deliveries by Phoebe Litchfield guided Australia over the 150-run mark.

Shafali Verma gave India a solid start, however wasn’t able to convert her inning into a big one and departed after scoring 20 runs off 13 deliveries. Smriti Mandhana on the other hand, played a disappointing knock of 6 runs off 12 balls before getting dismissed.

India was bolstered by Harmanpreet’s fifty (54*) and her 63-run stand for the fourth wicket with Deepti Sharma (29), but they crumbled under pressure to be restricted to 142/9 in 20 overs.

With 28 needed off the last 2 overs, India took 14 off the penultimate over. Needing 14 runs from the last over, they lost as many as 4 wickets to concede the game to Australia, as Harmanpreet was stranded on the other end.

India paid the price for sloppy fielding and also leaving it too late in run chase. Only 2 fours were hit between 7.4 and the end of 14th over as Harmanpreet hit her first boundary on her 15th ball. The Women in Blue only have themselves to blame for this defeat.

As the ICC Women’s t20 World Cup comes close, former Indian cricketer Veda Krishnamurthy has talked about the role spinners are going to play for India, along with 27-year-old Deepti Sharma being expected the be the key to success. India in known for its spin-dominated takes, and will be expected to rely on them to go with the challenge, especially on the grounds of the UAE.

Speaking with Star Sports, Krishnamurthy said, “Adjusting to the conditions is crucial when playing in the UAE, especially with this squad. Since the last tournament was in Bangladesh, not many changes have been made.”

“It’s a very spin-heavy team, and we rely heavily on spinners, particularly Deepti Sharma, who has been a key bowler for us. With the fast bowlers, especially Pooja Vastrakar coming in with the semi-new ball and hitting those hard lengths, it’s worked well for India.”

“It’s all about how they start, and they need Renuka to fire, regardless of the conditions. If they manage that, I think India will be very dominant in this World Cup.”

She also expanded on how she thinks Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma will play as a turning point in Indian team as they attempt to make history in the T20 World Cup.

“She definitely will be, as her bowling is crucial. If there’s any turn on offer, I think she’ll be even more deadly in those conditions. It’s been over a decade now she debuted in 2014 and she’s grown as a cricketer every year. She’s reached a point where she’s a vital part of the Indian team, regardless of the format.

Her performance, especially with the bat, will be key. Whether she’s coming in at number seven or eight, she can get those crucial runs. Deepti has been in good form with the franchise leagues she’s played in, and she just needs to carry that form into this World Cup and do well for India.”

The draft for the tenth edition of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) took place on September 1, with 8 teams in the competition adding to their squads ahead of the much-awaited season.

6 Indian players were picked in the draft, including star opener Smriti Mandhana, Deepti Sharma, and Jemimah Rodrigues. While the Indian contingent is expected to miss the start of the tournament, they should be available to play during the later stages.

Mandhana was the pre-draft pick of the reigning champions, Adelaide Strikers. With this, the opener becoming the first Indian player to be pre-signed by a BBL team.

Within the draft, the earliest Indian player drafted was Deepti Sharma as the fourth pick by the Melbourne Stars. This comes after Deepti’s stellar performances for the London Spirit in Women’s Hundred which concluded recently.

Jemimah Rodrigues was the second Indian player picked in the first round, joining Brisbane Heat as the seventh pick. She was joined by pacer Shikha Pandey who was chosen by the Brisbane side as their 15th pick.

Dayalan Hemalatha was next to be chosen, as the first pick of the third round by Perth Scorchers. Yastika Bhatia was the last Indian player picked up, with the wicketkeeper-batter joining Deepti Sharma at the Melbourne Stars.

There were some Indian players who weren’t able to get any takers in the draft. This includes the Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Shreyanka Patil who won the purple cap and was a key player for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in WPL 2024.

WBBL10 is set to commence on 27th October, soon after the conclusion of the Women’s T20 World Cup in the UAE.

Star India all-rounder Deepti Sharma is focusing on delivering the best for the Women in Blue in the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup and feels that the sudden change of venue won’t impact her side’s preparations. The ICC on Tuesday moved the T20 World Cup from Bangladesh to the UAE following unrest in the former South Asian nation. The event, scheduled to take place from October 3 to 20, will now be staged in Dubai and Sharjah.

“It doesn’t matter wherever the World Cup is happening, I just focus on how as an all-rounder I can contribute to the team’s success. I just want to give it my all and the last 4-5 months have been fruitful for us, let’s hope we continue the good work and end the trophy wait this time. We have a little idea about how the wickets will play in UAE,” Deepti told PTI.

Deepti has recently been on the top of their game with both the bat and the ball and is enjoying her cricket at the moment. The all-rounder was brilliant throughout The Hundred for the London Spirit Women and finished things off in style as with a winning six to take her team to its first-ever title.

“I am enjoying my cricket at the moment and this has enabled me to shrug the pressure off my shoulders. I have learnt from the other international cricketers that when you start enjoying the game, you do better on the field. I don’t let pressure get the better of me, I have developed this habit since I played the first game in the Women’s Super League back in 2018. I have developed this habit and made it a part of my game,” Deepti added.

“That moment (Hitting the winning runs in The Hundred final at Lord’s) was amazing, this is what I was missing. It is always great that you win the game for your team. I thanked God for his blessings because in such situations you need to believe in yourself. If you do so, then you do it,” Deepti further added.

Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma played the role of a pivot with both her batting and bowling skills as she helped London Spirits beat Welsh Fire by four wickets and lift their maiden Women’s The Hundred title. Deepti had a wicket while giving away 23 runs, and then smashed a ball-to-ball 16, which also included the match winning six off the ball by Hayley Matthews. Two years ago, Deepti controversially dismissed Dean with a run-out at the non-striker’s end during the 3rd ODI against England in 2022, which acted as a trigger towards her spirit for the game.

It was a moment of satisfaction for Deepti and was the loss of hope for Dean that day, but here the two worked on the same side, working their way for the maiden victory as they chased a target of 116 in 98 balls.

Apart from Deepti, Eva Gray and Sarah Glenn bagged two wickets each. Tara Norris also gave her share with a wicket. Because of the team’s fierce display with the ball, Welsh Fire could only go up to 115 for 8 in 100 balls.
