Former India cricketer Manoj Tiwary slammed head coach Gautam Gambhir following a 3-1 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar series. Tiwary also labelled Gambhir as a hypocrite in his scathing attack.

Gambhir’s time as the India head coach has so far been quite disappointing. Under his guidance, the Men in Blue suffered a defeat in the ODI series against Sri Lanka and also slumped to a humiliating 0-3 Test series defeat at home to New Zealand.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy loss led to more criticism for Gambhir with Tiwary saying that he has not shown the kind of coaching that was expected.

“Gautam Gambhir is a hypocrite. He doesn’t do what he says. The captain (Rohit) is from Mumbai, Abhishek Nayar is from Mumbai. Rohit has been pushed to the forefront. There is no one to speak for Jalaj Saxena. He performs well but keeps quiet,” Tiwary told News18Bangla.

“What is the use of a bowling coach? Whatever the coach says, he will agree. Morne Morkel came from Lucknow Super Giants. Abhishek Nayar was at Kolkata Knight Riders with Gambhir and the Indian head coach knows that he will not go against his instructions,” Tiwary added.

Tiwary also believes that Gambhir doesn’t have a good relationship with skipper Rohit Sharma. He also questioned as to how the duo will work together by comparing their achievements and saying that while Rohit is a World Cup-winning captain, Gambhir’s feats as captain are restricted to the IPL.

“How will they work together? Rohit is a World Cup-winning captain while Gambhir led KKR to IPL titles both as a captain and mentor. Gambhir didn’t guide KKR to the title single-handedly as we all performed as a unit. Jacques Kallis, Sunil Narine and I, all contributed to the cause. But who took the credit? There is an environment and PR that allows him to take all the credit,” Tiwary said.

Former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwary heavily criticized skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir for the Men in Blue’s Test series defeat to New Zealand on home soil.

India’s defeat to the Kiwis in the Pune Test marked the end of an 18-series winning streak at home for Team India. Following the embarrassing loss, Rohit and Gambhir have come under the scanner for their approach and team selection.

During a discussion, Tiwary warned the Indian skipper and the team management for the developing cracks in the dressing room.

“India’s biggest enemy was the weather in Bengaluru, because they had prepared a turning track. After winning the toss India had the opportunity to field, but I don’t know why they opted to bat first, and that is where it all started. First, they got the team selection wrong, then after losing the first Test, they made three changes,” Tiwary told Cricbuzz.

Tiwary believes that the selection calls that the team management took in the second Test can lead to disturbances or even cracks within the team.

“Well, you could call that Washington Sundar change an inspiring one, but that doesn’t mean that Kuldeep Yadav could not get them wickets. So they felt the dearth of batting options, and hence, they wanted Sundar to contribute lower down the order. That is why India went out of their way to get him in,” Tiwary said.

“What this will lead to is in the coming days there will be a lot of disturbances in the team, there will be cracks in the team. You already have a spin-bowling all-rounder in Axar Patel, who picked up wickets in spinning conditions previously. But you ignored him and then benched Kuldeep in the second Test. You did not play Akash Deep in Bengaluru, but included him in the second Test, where you did not give him the ball in the second innings. Then you did not start with Jasprit Bumrah in the attack. All these things will backfired,” Tiwary added.

The Indian team will be looking to end the 3-match series with a win in the final Test which is set to be played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Former Indian batter Manoj Tiwary opened up on how he was controversially dropped from the Indian team at the ‘peak of his career’. Even though Tiwary scored a century in an ODI against West Indies in 2011, he was surprisingly dropped from the team in the next match. He eventually did make his comeback but it was almost eight months after that match.

Tiwary expressed his disappointment and took an indirect dig at Dhoni, adding that he will talk about everything in the future. He further said that if a player is dropped at the peak of his career, his confidence is completely ‘crushed’.

“See, it happened a long time ago. It’s a matter of the past, but yes, dukh to hota hi hai (It was sad). I would lie if I said it wasn’t saddening. What can we do? It’s life; but it needs to move forward. If I am to write my autobiography or I do a podcast of my own, I will reveal it all. But it wasn’t easy. When a player is at his peak, when his confidence is crushed, it causes a change in mindset,” Tiwary told Cricket Addictor.

Tiwary also showered praise on pacer Akash Deep whom he believes will perform well in overseas conditions and will stand alongside some of the great bowlers.

“When Akash Deep came into the senior team from U23, it was clear that he had talent. He has worked very hard to turn that talent into performance and made all the sacrifices needed to achieve something significant. He’s a hardworking and mentally stable player,” Tiwary told IANS.

“So far, he’s performed exceptionally well in Indian conditions. Imagine, when he plays in overseas conditions like Australia, England or South Africa, his performance will make him stand among some of the great bowlers,” Tiwary added.

Manoj questioned the decision taken by Rohit and Gambhir for India’s playing XI in the 1st Test where India went with two pacers, namely Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.

Sometimes I don’t understand the decisions. Common sense seems to be lacking. What the coach or captain is trying to prove, is beyond my understanding,” Tiwary said on the Cricbuzz YouTube channel.

I feel like, whenever there is a new coach or new captain, they try to prove something, and take such decisions,” said Tiwary.

Former cricketers Manoj Tiwary and others sent their wishes to former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly on his 52nd birthday. Ganguly, who was called as ‘God of off side’ by former teammate Rahul Dravid, made many superb contributions in the field of cricket. “You are, you were and you will always be an inspiration!! Love you Dada and wishing you a very happy birthday,” Tiwary wrote on X.

Along with sending wishes, Patel praised Ganguly for his development of Indian cricket.

“A big hand of this guy in development of #IndianCricketteam where we are today. A very #HAPPYBIRTHDAY legend @SGanguly99. Wishing you healthy life ahead #DADA,” Patel wrote on X.

During his career, Ganguly led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League(IPL). The IPL franchise wished their former captain and captioned their post on X, “Maharaja. Dada. The Prince of Kolkata. Happy Birthday, Sourav Ganguly.”

Even though he was a batter who could play with both grace and accuracy, his career had to come to an end in 1996. He was elevated to the top of the ODI order later that same year, and he and Sachin Tedulkar together constituted one of the most potential opening combinations in history.

Ganguly was infamous for his specific leadership style throughout his time when he was on pitch. In summer of 1996, in his Test debut against England, he earned the nickname of ‘Dada’. Shortly after, he mad headlines as he scored a century in his first Test at Lord’s and ‘Prince of Kolkata’ then went to score another century in his second test, becoming the 3rd batter to make a hundred in each of his first two innings in history.

Manoj Tiwary, former Indian Cricketer announced his retirement from all the formats after he led Bengal in Ranji Trophy 2024. But unfortunately, the team couldn’t move ahead the league stage.

Tiwary’s stellar career has had a lot of secrets it seems as the cricketer has been making big revelations since he put an end to his career. He has completed 10,000 runs in FC cricket further he has played 3 T20Is and 12 ODIs for Team India. The biggest revelation he made was when he blatantly questioned MS Dhoni as to why was he dropped from the Indian Team despite scoring a match winning century against the West Indies in 2011.

In 2012, the 38-year old was also a part of KKR which also won their title in the same year. Tiwary opened up about the fight he has with Gautam Gambhir which further led to his release from the squad and that caused a wound to his bank balance as well.

Tiwary stated that the incident took place in 2013 and before 2014 IPL he was released, this caused a big hole in his pocket as well as he could’ve earned a lot more money if played some more seasons.

“During my time at KKR, I had a big fight with Gambhir in the dressing room. That never came to light. KKR became the champion in 2012. At that time, I managed to hit four, so the team won. I got a chance to play for KKR one more year. Had I not fought with Gambhir in 2013, maybe I would have played for another two-three years. That means the amount I was supposed to get as per the contract would have gone up. Bank balance would be strengthened. But I never thought about that,” Manoj Tiwary told Anandabazar Patrika.

Manoj Tiwary opened up about his miscommunication with Delhi Daredevils as he was acquired for 2.8 crore during the 2014 IPL auction, but due to the misunderstanding he was released from the franchise.

“Gary Kirsten was the coach when I played for Delhi Capitals. I was seeing in front of my eyes in one match after another that the first eleven was not going well. The combination was not correct. Eligible cricketers were not getting a chance to play. Many were out due to injuries. The results of the team were not good. I went straight and said, leave me if you can’t put me in the XI. My contract then was INR 2.8 crore. I never thought that if I said this, they would misunderstand me and leave me. Never thought of my loss,” Tiwary concluded.

Regardless the format, the Indian cricket team has always been the most tough to break into. The most difficult aspect is maintaining the position for the greatest period of time. Most talented cricketers have departed despite making it onto the squad, and many more have never made it that far while playing in large numbers in domestic cricket. On Monday Manoji Tiwari took retirement after leading Bengal for the one last time towards an outstanding victory over Bihar at the Eden Gardens in their final league-stage match of the ongoing Ranji Trophy season, the former India cricketer revealed one of his greatest regret in his career, where he questioned MS Dhoni’s act when the wicketkeeper-batsman was a captain of Team India.

Tiwary made his India debut in 2008 and appeared in 12 ODIs and three T20Is throughout a seven-year period spanning eight series. In December 2011, he hit his first international century, an undefeated 104 against West Indies in Chennai. But, he had to wait seven months for the next opportunity to play for the team.

Speaking to News 18 on Monday after announcing his retirement, Tiwary said that he would want to know an explanation from former captain Dhoni about why he was forced to wait for 14 consecutive matches even though he scored a century and won Player of the Match. He went on to say that he was overlooked for the 2012 Australia tour, during which elite players including as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Suresh Raina failed to score.

“I want to hear from him whenever I get the opportunity. I will definitely ask this question. I would like to ask Dhoni why I was dropped from the team after scoring the century, especially in that tour of Australia where nobody was scoring runs, neither was Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma or Suresh Raina. I have nothing to lose now,” he said.

Tiwary expressed one of his greatest regrets which was not earning a Test cap. Tiwary cited his first-class stats and practice matches against Australia and England as reasons why the Indian selectors selected Yuvraj Singh despite his home achievements.

“When I had completed playing 65 first-class matches, my batting average was around 65. The Australia team had toured India then, and I had scored 130 in a friendly game, then I scored 93 against England in a friendly game. I was very close, but they picked Yuvraj Singh instead. So Test cap and the fact that I was ignored after getting the Man of the Match award for scoring a hundred…I was ignored for 14 straight matches. When self-confidence is at its peak and someone destroys that, it tends to kill that player,” he added.

The 38-year-old, who is also Bengal’s junior Sports Minister, retired from first-class cricket after scoring over 10,000 runs in 147 matches since debuting in 2004.

Dubai: Usually, it would be Suryakumar Yadav at No 4 – but ex-India cricketer Manoj Tiwary has suggested an interesting change at that position. Ahead of the do-or-die game against NZ, Tiwary wants Ravindra Jadeja to bat at the No 4 position. Pointing that being rigid with the batting order is not good, Tiwary reckoned Jadeja is good at rotating the strike and can unleash the big shots towards the end.

“As I already said, Jadeja should be promoted to the fourth spot. Rishabh can follow him with the last few overs remaining because that suits his game,” he said while speaking to Sportskeeda.

He also said that if the management decides to play young Ishan Kishan, then Suryakumar would have to sit out. But again, Tiwary points that Kishan is best suited at the top whereas Surya is good at the backend of the innings as he has a wide range of shots.

“If the team management decides to bring Ishan Kishan in, then Surya misses out. But we’ve seen that Ishan has done better while opening the batting, so he is unlikely to get a chance in the middle order. Surya has a wide range of shots in his armory, so he’ll come in handy at the fag end of an innings,” he added.

Tiwary also felt it would be unfair to drop Hardik Pandya after merely one game. “If they want to persist with Hardik Pandya, they have to find the ideal slot for him. The think-tank believes that he is better than the batters who are sitting out. For him to return to form, it’s imperative that he gets adequate time in the middle. It would be unfair to drop him after just one game,” he concluded.
