A few weeks before the Champions Trophy 2025, 38-year-old Martin Guptill, one of New Zealand’s best cricket players, has announced his retirement from International cricket. Guptill had played 367 games in all forms through the entirety of his 14-year career (2009-2022). He has set multiple records in white-ball cricket and has scored 23 international centuries.

Guptill is leaving the sport as New Zealand’s top T20 run-scorer as he had scored 3,531 runs in 122 games. After Stephen Fleming and Ross Taylor, he is third on New Zealand’s all-time record as he has 7,346 runs in ODIs.

Guptill made a remarkable debut in 2009 when NZ defeated West Indies at Eden Park, and became the first player from NZ to hit a century in his maiden ODI. Later that same year, he also got selected for the ICC’s World ODI XI.

Guptill stated that playing for the Blackcaps was his childhood dream and that he felt very fortunate and happy that he got the chance to represent his country in 367 games. The 38-year-old even expressed gratitude to his coaches and teammates through the years.

“As a young kid it was always my dream to play for New Zealand and I feel incredibly lucky and proud to have played 367 games for my country. I will forever cherish the memories made wearing the silver fern alongside a great group of guys. I want to say a huge thanks to all my teammates and coaching staff over the years, in particular Mark O’Donnell, who has coached me since the Under 19 level and been a source of ongoing support and wisdom over my career,” said Guptill.

A special thanks must also go to my manager Leanne McGoldrick – all of the work behind the scenes never went unnoticed and I’ll be forever appreciative of all your support. To my wife Laura and our beautiful children Harley and Teddy – thank-you. Thank you Laura for the sacrifices you have made for me and our family. You’ve been my biggest supporter, my rock and my counsel through all of the ups and downs that come with the game. I am eternally grateful. Finally I’d like to thank all the cricket fans, here in NZ and around the world for all their support throughout the years,” he added

The most memorable moment of Guptill’s career was when he made 237 not-out in 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup quarterfinal against West Indies in Wellington. His 189 not-out against England in 2013, along with 180 not-out against South Africa are some other

South Africa’s David Miller once again showcased his explosive batting skills as he tore apart the Pakistan bowling attack with a fabulous knock of 82 runs off just 40 deliveries. This innings carried South Africa to a fighting total of 183/9 in 20 overs which proved to be too much for the visitors, who were only able to post 172 runs in their 20 overs.

Miller hit 4 boundaries and 8 towering sixes in his innings which propelled the Proteas to an 11-run victory in Durban. This knock saw Miller reach 2550 runs in T20Is, leaving him only 35 runs behind from Quinton de Kock to become the highest-scorer in the shortest format for his country.

While de Kock currently has more runs than Miller in the format, the latter has both a better average and a better strike-rate than the former.

De Kock has accumulated his runs at a strike rate of 138.32 and an average of 31.51 whereas Miller’s T20I runs have come at a strike rate of 141.19 and an average of 33.55.

Miller also entered an elite list with his sensational knock against Pakistan as he became only the sixth player to score 400 or more runs against the Men in Green. The South Africa batter has scored exactly 400 runs from 15 innings against Pakistan in the shortest format, scoring 3 fifties.

The list is currently led by New Zealand’s Kane Williamson with 667 runs followed by his teammates Mark Chapman (541 runs), Martin Guptill (526 runs), India’s Virat Kohli (492 runs) and England’s Eoin Morgan (427 runs).

The challenge of playing in India especially against spin bowling has a historic record of testing the skills of even the best teams. The upcoming Tests between India and New Zealand might turn out to be an exciting contest, especially since Indian squad will be playing on home grounds.

Former Clack caps owner Martin Guptill talked about the challenges that New Zealand might face, especially talking about the unpredictable nature of the India pitches. Since Martin has experienced the difficulties of Indian grounds by himself, he believes that the biggest challenge for the visitors will be understanding the refinement of the pitches.

“You feel like you can never score sometimes, that’s the hardest thing about coming here to India. The ball’s turning square, then the same sort of ball comes through and it skids on straights,” Guptill said.

“You never know which one’s going to turn and which one’s going to go straight, so you have to always be thinking, you have to always be mentally on song and on (the top of) your game,” he added

“To try and get on top of India is extremely difficult. But when you feel like you are, you have to try and take that as long as possible in the game,” he said.

“It’s a tough place to play. It’s hot, sweaty and you feel like everything’s against you. But as I said, if you can get try and get on top of them and you feel like you are getting on top of them, you’ve got to try and go as deep as possible in the game,” he further added.

Martin Guptill, a former Black Caps opener, believes that the main problem for the New Zealand hitters on their next Test tour of India would be finding the turning ball and more so the odd one that slips through.

Three Test matches between India and New Zealand, the victors of the 2019–21 World Test Championship, will take place starting on October 16 in Bengaluru, Pune, and Mumbai.

The worst thing about coming to India is that sometimes you feel like you can never win. The ball is turning square, and then another ball of the same kind comes through and skids straight ahead.

In an exclusive interview with PTI on the sidelines of Legends League Cricket, Guptill said, “You never know which one’s going to turn and which one’s going to go straight, so you have to always be thinking, you have to always be mentally on song and on (the top of) your game.”

Guptill emphasized the significance of maintaining the lead against India, who have won their last 17 series at home.

It’s quite challenging to try and dominate India. However, you have to strive to prolong that in the game as long as you can when you feel like you are,” he remarked.

It’s not an easy location to play. You feel like everything is against you and it’s hot and muggy. However, as I previously stated, you must attempt to play as deep into the game as you can if you can try to dominate them and feel like you are doing so,” the former opener continued.

Guptill stated that it is difficult to determine whether of Ravichandran Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah poses the most threat to the Kiwis given their present form.

“The two of them. You mean to take away that (Ravindra) Jadeja received an 86, 89, or something like that, isn’t that possible?

“You think you’ve got India against the ropes, and then these two come out and bat,” the bowler said after their partnership of 199 runs.

In the first Test match between India and Bangladesh in Chennai, the hosts were down to 144 for six on the opening day until Jadeja and Ashwin’s 199-run partnership for the seventh wicket turned the tide against the Tigers.

“Ashwin goes about his work in a completely different way and is very effective in the way he scores his runs, even though Jadeja is probably the better batter,” he remarked.

“Due to their depth and, of course, their partnership with the ball, you never feel like you’re winning against India,” he remarked.

Guptill claimed that the current seam attack lacked the added pace of young Kiwi pacer Will O Rourke, who tormented the Sri Lankan batsmen by taking eight wickets in the Galle Test.

“When I played him for the first time, maybe three years ago, I was incredibly pleased with his bowling. For him to have improved more in the last couple of years and get his chance in Test cricket, man, he’s had a really terrific start,” he said.

“He has a bit more height than some of our bowlers, and that extra pace behind him gives him that little bit extra bounce, which helps a lot more on our wickets at home than maybe what it does here in the subcontinent,” Guptill continued.

Guptill acknowledged that the Kiwis’ Test team is about to undergo change, but he also stated that it will take time to see if the younger players can replace players like Kane Williamson.

Time will tell, I suppose. I’m not able to remark on that right now. He remarked, “You know whether these new players are up to it or not until they come through and start playing.

“It will take time for them, I suppose, once Kane and the likes have finished playing and these new guys come in,” he remarked.

1. Rohit Sharma (India) – 612 sixes

The Indian Test and ODI captain is known very well for his hard-hitting. The opener generally gives India a terrific start in both the ODI and T20I format but is also not shy to smash the bowlers for maximums in Test cricket.

2. Chris Gayle (West Indies) – 553 sixes

Nicknamed ‘The Universe Boss’, Gayle terrorized bowling lineups especially in T20Is and ODIs. He was also known for playing Test cricket like a limited over format where he obliterated the bowlers by smashing them around the park.

3. Shahid Afridi (Pakistan) – 476 sixes

Not only was Afridi terrific as a bowler, he was a fantastic batsman as well. The all-rounder was known to try and hit the bowler for a maximum as soon as he came on to bat regardless of the format. Many times this strategy worked while many times it didn’t, but when it did work, the bowlers used to get absolutely decimated by Afridi.

4. Brendon McCullum (New Zealand) – 398 sixes

Another batsman who showed no mercy to the bowlers regardless of the format, McCullum is easily one of the best hard-hitting batsmen to ever play the game. When in form, the former New Zealand captain was an absolute nightmare for the bowlers with his fearless approach and hard-hitting prowess.

5. Martin Guptill (New Zealand) – 383 sixes

One of McCullum’s teammates and his opening partner on many occasions, Guptill was also a brilliant hitter of the ball. His hard-hitting prowess was best displayed in his knock of 237 runs against West Indies in the ODI World Cup 2015. Guptill still holds the record for the highest individual score in ODI World Cup history.
